The first time I (Vie) fell off of a paddleboard, I was practicing sun salutations. I knew right then and there thatthis was going to be a lifelong passion. The time was summer of 2006, and the place, Fort Desoto on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We had just finished taking a group out for KaYoga (a term coined by Tim…) to Shell Key, a tiny island nearby. We were using our 2 newly purchased paddleboards (Jimmy Lewis) that we had ordered from North Carolina. At that time, no one in our area was carrying paddleboards. The popular belief at the local surf shops was that paddleboarding was just another fad. Time has proven they were mistaken. We had seen the curiosity on people’s faces when they saw us standing while paddling, as opposed to sitting. I looked at Tim and said, “I bet I can do more Sun Salutations than you.” Tim decided to take me up on this challenge and he fell in at the 9th Sun Salutation while I kept going, until I “willingly” fell in at number 20. Years later, we came to realize that at that moment, every one around us had witnessed the sea-grass roots of what came to be SUP & Yoga (Stand Up Paddle & Yoga.) People were having so much fun trying out our 2 Jimmy Lewis paddleboards that within a few months we ended up switching our kayak fleet into a SUP fleet consisting mostly of the now extinct Imagine Surf Eco Hybrid Surfers (Hybrid as in SUP/Kayak.) It was amazing to watch the enjoyment on people’s faces as they were standing and gliding across the water making eye contact with the dolphins and manatees who were playing all around them. Little did we know that the amazement we were witnessing then was minimal compared to what we felt when we watched them practice yoga on their paddleboards. I cannot think of a more rewarding feeling than having played a positive part in another person’s life-changing experience. Having introduced thousands of people to Stand Up Paddle & Yoga and having certified hundreds of SUP & Yoga Teachers, there are no words to describe the human bond that Stand Up Paddle & Yoga helps create. And here we are, attempting to document our personal experience, so we can introduce as many people as possible to the magical portal of Stand Up Paddle & Yoga.

Not only beautiful to look at, the images are inspiring, soothing and instructional, this book is filled with guidance for anyone interested in SUP and or Yoga. Vie & Tim do a wonderful job of explaining the concepts and techniques of SUP, helping not only the novice but also advancing the experience of a regular paddle boarder. The link to Yoga, both are veteran yogis and instructors, is seamless. Whether you are new to yoga or it is already part of your life you will find there is something for everyone. This book is a great resource for both SUP and Yoga and those interested in combining both worlds this is a must! Enjoy

Looking for the mind set of a professional player? This is your book!

I have followed Steve's methodology on tennis for decades. I thought I had learned all there was to learn from him, however once I read this book I realized I was just scratching the surface of his knowledge.

This book helped me through some very tough matches, every time I was in a crunch point I would think back to what I had read and applied it. Since reading this book I am finding my self less stressful and much more focused in the crucial moments of a match. It has really helped me maintain my focus without losing control of my emotions.

I suggest anyone read this if they are looking to gain the upper edge on their games during those difficult point and matches!!

Durocher, suspended for a year in a feud with Yankee owner Larry MacPhail, would return to the Dodgers in 1948 but was let go and hired by the rival New York Giants where he stayed until the end of the 1955 season. In 1966, Durocher returned to baseball as manager of the Chicago Cubs (1966-1972), and the Houston Astros (1972-73), before retiring. Durocher passed away in 1991 at the age of 86.

Enjoyable read of the Leo Durocher era Brooklyn Dodgers

I hadn't known this book existed because I thought the only book Durocher wrote was "Nice Guys Finish Last". The language less bluer in this book which makes sense since it was written in 1948. Still it is pretty good insight into the pre-Boys of Summer Brooklyn Dodgers. I especially enjoyed Leo's description of the near fatal train wreck and fire he and the team went through in 1945. My biggest gripe with the book was that it really didn't cover the rift created on the team caused by Jackie Robinson's debut. It is well known that Durocher puts the screws to the racist petition started by the Dodger players from the South. I just wish that Leo would have given that more detail but readers would have to wait 25 years for his next book for that. All fans of the Dodgers - especially the Brooklyn Dodgers - should read this book.

"Just about everything did happen to me at Ebbets Field. Most of it was good. Some of it was unbelievable."

In pre-season 1947, Leo Durocher was suspended from baseball for one year by Commissioner Happy Chandler when he got into a flame war with Yankees owner Larry McPhail, a personal friend of Chandler's. McPhail and Durocher had accused each other of allowing gamblers in their respective clubhouses, and a ghostwritten article under Leo's name in the Brooklyn Eagle stated Chandler showed favoritism toward clubowners by warning Leo but not Larry against his associations. This in-print comment, whatever its origin, was Durocher's undoing.

In THE DODGERS AND ME (1948), his autobiography written during that year off, Leo hints that McPhail's insult of him and new wife Laraine Day led to the war of words between them. As a way of apology for not being more forthcoming about this situation, Durocher closes his final chapter by quoting the commissioner's ruling:

"All parties to this controversy are silenced from the time this order is issued."

Like no other book on the pre-Jackie Robinson Brooklyn Dodgers, Durocher's brings to life the seasons when he joined the team as a player, then became player-manager under the very same McPhail, a man who (according to Leo), fired him on a regular basis and then rescinded these terminations the next day.

His writing style is conversational, like that of a fellow having a few beers with you at a neighborhood tavern, and many of the incidents that Leo recalls can be found nowhere else. My only criticism, if it can be called that, is how at times Durocher throws around the last names of players now obscured by seven decades of time, men often not previously mentioned by him, who were undoubtedly familiar to fan readers of 1948. These occasions are however too rare to spoil the baseball history lover's pleasure.

The narrative skips quickly over the rise of Charley Ebbets from stand vendor to president to owner in the late 19th Century, then to the era of manager Wilbert 'Uncle Robbie' Robinson, finally to Leo's 1938 arrival from St. Louis, in a trade orchestrated by future Dodgers president/GM Branch Rickey (Cards business manager at that time). Brooklyn in those days was a laughingstock cellar-dwelling team of eccentrics and sots. In '39, Durocher succeeded Uncle Robbie as Dodgers manager. Just two years later he guided them to a pennant, their first in twenty-one years. What Leo had to deal with to accomplish this is fascinating, and there's five memorable seasons that follow.

Durocher returned to the Dodgers in 1948, after their first place run the previous year under interim manager Burt "Barney" Shotton. By mid-July, Brooklyn skidded to last place and Branch Rickey again sent Leo packing, this time to hated rivals, the New York Giants. In '51 the Giants ended their season tied with the Dodgers for first place. A single game between them decided things. Bobby Thompson's legendary "Shot Heard 'Round the World" home run off Ralph Branca gave the National League pennant to New York... and to the irrepressible Leo Durocher.

Good read for baseball historians

I enjoyed reading Durocher's first person account of his years with the Dodgers. I had hoped that there would be more about Jackie Robinson, but the book ended after the 1947 season which was Robinson's rookie year and the year Durocher was suspended from managing.

Most of the book was a simple rehashing of each of Leo's Brooklyn years with a lot of his dealings with Branch Rickey. As much as I enjoyed reading those stories, it made me much more curious about Branch Rickey's career.

So I received this book today. My anticipation for this book would be that it would reveal or even state clear and consice aspects of the filipino martial arts (FMA) on how it can be extrapolaited for close quarter combatives/self-defense application. Unfortunately I was very dissappointed to see that the application for the FMA in a street confrontation was lacking to say the least. I speak from the view point of being a FMA practitioner myself which just under 5 years of participating in the art, but I also speak as an individual from almost a decade of being a law enforcement officer as well. So with that said, I have somewhat of an insight when people engage in the taking of life. (notice how I didn't say "fighting" because that implies some type of equality) When someone who wants to FINISH you (i.e. kill you), then the situation is much different.
So on to the book, the empty hand tactics and techniques for facing an altercation is good. Solid movement, easy to follow, and from what I can see of the pictures it gives a clear idea of what needs to be done to end an altercation quickly. As far as the empty hand versus knife.....geez....this is hard to say only because the photos and book description as what you would do are somewhat unrealistic. It shows that you should grab the wrist or try to disarm the knife or blade with the hand (which in reality would be difficult and possibly deadly to you if you screw it up!) Mind you, you are in the adrenal state and all those fine motor skills go out the window so ya, not very realistic on the hand versus knife.
Same thing with the empty versus bolo (machette), again not very realistic. The knife versus knife, again if you want to duel and such, then fine. But if you actually find yourself in a situation where you are blade versus blade, then again, this book fails to give an accurate picture of what may happen. Again, your not tryng to 'fight' but finish your opponent.
If this book was a DVD instead then maybe I would have been able to see what the author was trying to state in his movements and ideas. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and the book kind of fails in showing an accurate picture of that.
As far as what I feel would be a good alternative to empty hand compatives that still have the expressionism of the FMA in them, check out the following: Kelly McCann--Combatives for Street Survival DVD, Jim Grovers: A hardcore guide to Offense based Defensive tactics DVD, Jim Wagner's Reality Based Personal Protection Series DVD, and Kali Tudo DVD (Dog Brothers Martial Arts)
These are the people who have faced combatives in life and on the job, along with alot of what they show is very similar if not almost identical to some of the FMA based empty striking and such. These people have either tested or shown how the FMA can be applied for self defense and combat application. Sure, it may not look pretty or apparent to be the FMA, but if you look closing and extract the essense of the material presented, you will definitely see it!

great reading and technology on the filipino combat arts

As a filipino martial artist training in Giron Arnis, Lameco Eskrima, and Pekiti Tersia Kali, i find this book simple to read and understand the technology. The techniques are not made to be flashy like one would assume is on tv. The tech is real and is what is needed to save you in a real life situation. I starting working in corrections in 2002 and have been a martial artist since 1996. I enjoyed this book, its one of the best books ive read on FMA i would really like to see another book maybe even a dvd in the future.

Eskrima Street Defense was an outstanding read

Eskrima Street Defense by Master Fernando Bong Abenir was an outstanding read.

With the passing of many of the grand masters, perpetuating the art and especially the fighting spirit of the Filipino martial arts are becoming increasingly important. Master Bong does an outstanding job of capturing and presenting his vast knowledge gained over decades of training with some of the greatest masters in the Philippines in a simple and easy to understand way. He more importantly provides a glimpse into the kind of mindset needed to fight through and prevail in life and death situations in environments that are less than optimal.

I would highly recommend this book for both experienced and novice FMA practitioners.
