Good for couple days before the exam!

Great book! Sorry to say though, the only update from the previous editions, which is a bit good, is the addition of pictures to some of the questions and the replacement of a few of the questions with new ones. If you have the previous editions, you're not missing out too much.

I loved pretest books for preparing for shelf exams this one in particular, I took my time with it and went over it twice especially things I got wrong. It helped me get in a 91% on the shelf which I've never done before.

I sort of feel like I've been scammed a little

I sort of feel like I've been scammed a little. While the content is average, probably comparable to any other pediatrics review resource, the entire book is in black and white despite the color cover. This would be disappointing, but not terrible, if the quality of the printing were excellent, but it's garbage. There may as well be no photos in this book because you can barely see them. Interpreting an X-ray in such poor, fuzzy quality or photos of a rash or jaundice without color is nearly impossible! Why would any medical resource be printed like this? I'm extremely disappointed in this purchase and wish I could get my money back. It appears as though someone photocopied the real book on a copier from 1993, bound it in a legitimate-looking cover and sold it. It's surprising because the same publisher puts out Case Files, which I used for OBGYN, and the paper and printing are of fine quality and in color. With pretest they seem to drop it down several notches. With respect to the explanations, some are good, but some are lacking. I'd stick with UWorld.

Update: I just googled the pdf version and I have to say, the black and white photos I'm viewing on my screen are of infinitely better quality than the same images printed in this book. Perhaps I really did receive a knockoff.

About the Author
Mark Rashid (pronounced RASH-id) is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He began working with horses at age ten, when he met the “old man,” who taught him to work with horses, not against them, and to listen to what the horse is trying to say. Mark’s clinics center on one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.

When Mark decided to study the martial art of aikido as a way to improve his horsemanship, he brought the same quiet determination to it that he exhibits in his work with horses. After years of practice, he has earned a second degree black belt in Yoshinkan aikido and now teaches the “way of harmony” in the local dojo.

Mark worked full time on ranches for many years gathering herds, managing stock, and training horses. When time permits, he still enjoys working on ranches near his home in Estes Park, Colorado.

Mark has been a guest on NPR’s The Horse Show and was featured on the Nature series on PBS. He is the author of nine books - Considering the Horse, A Good Horse is Never a Bad Color; Horses Never Lie; Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse; Horsemanship Through Life; Big Horses, Good Dogs, & Straight Fences; A Life With Horses; Whole Heart, Whole Horse; and his latest, a novel, Out of the Wild. He also has a solo music CD Song of the Prairie and enjoys singing and playing guitar with a local band The Elktones.

A beautiful read!

This is a beautiful book. I have had the great good fortune of studying with Mark, and so I can say with certainty that this is a person who truly walks (and rides) the talk. Mark’s writing is so engaging, so plain-spoken and yet eloquent, that I find myself reading just several pages at a time, savoring the writing like rich chocolate.

As a Somatic Movement Therapist, a body person, dancer, movement analyst, I am always in search of writing that percolates into the body, that changes me as I read. This is his gift to not just the rider, but all of us. His view of softness is not limited to the riders hands, or seat of legs, but extends to every aspect of life. He helps us to bring greater awareness and “feel” to each moment.

Doing that wakes us up to a bodily relationship to the present. Ellen Langer, author of Mindfulness, talks about it as learning to notice new things. Softly holding my cup of tea this morning, I began to see how the light moved through the glass candlesticks and vase on the table as if it were underwater. I heard the sound of the dogs moving above us like little rattles. I felt the warmth of the cup moving up my arms. New things.

What I also have noticed, with my soft, mindful attention, is the tendency to orient toward pain, toward anxiety. It is actually easier to harden around those old, repeating thoughts than to sit in the soft newness of the now. Why is that?
Because being hard (hard body, hard mind, hard heart) is easier than vulnerability and openness. In Mark’s book, the reader will find help for all of that. Look and see!

Disappointed

I usually love Mark Rashid books but not this one. SO much of this book is filled with martial arts stories and contributions by his clinic participants that I became bored and impatient to get through it. After skipping past the above referenced annoyances, there wasn't much left to read about a feel and connection to horses. I wrongly assumed the book would be about Rashid and his journey to softness, told through personal accounts with horses. What it turned out to be mostly about is other people's journeys and his accounts of softening through martial arts. Some of theses accounts, overbearing long.

I enjoyed the stories in this book and examples given - it is indeed a journey described and one I was very grateful to read. It is not a "how to" book but more about lessons that have helped learn the concept of softness. I found I could consider a number of the lessons and how they might apply in my life or what did that lesson say to me. I know I will read it a few times and see new things to consider each time. Very worthwhile reading for anyone who wants to consider themselves and their interactions with horses.

Being a Northern California expatriate and a bit of a sports nut, I’ve loved watching the rise of the Golden State Warriors over the past couple of years. One of the happiest parts of that rise (beside their beautifully selfless teamwork) has been the emergence of Stephen Curry as MVP and NBA star. This book illustrates why.

The book is written nicely, where a youngster would enjoy it as well as an adult. Not “dumbed down” or oversimplified, just stated in a manner suited for all audiences. Curry himself makes for a terrific subject, not just because of his incredible skill as a player, but his humility, faith, and devotion to family. (After all, daughter Riley stole the show in the post-championship interviews!) His collegiate career is covered well, as is his earlier time in the NBA. He’s not seen “in a bubble”, either, but in the context of his team and other NBA standouts. (I mention that after having read a number of sports bios with little reference to anyone other than the subject.)

I would absolutely recommend this book for basketball fans, Warriors fans, Steph Curry/Splash Brothers fans, and anyone else, age can-read-reasonably-well to adult, who enjoys a book about a respected and talented young man whose hard work, faith and family have brought him to fame and success. awesome story of faith and basketball

I loved how the story was written without ruining the events of his life for those who do not know. He got where he is today by hard work. Yes, his father was a great NBA player but, we do not see too many children of NBA players in the league. It tells of all the hard work where he went to school and how he came to be one of the best players in NBA and even part of how the game is changing. It was a quick and easy read on a amazing young athlete in Stephen Curry. The book goes through Curry's basketball life from when he was young/childhood, to his high school career to college and eventually on to the NBA.

This book is a really inspiring story about basketball player Stephen Curry!

This book is a really inspiring story about basketball player Stephen Curry. I learned so much about Stephen’s life and career from reading this book. As I progressed through the pages of this story I felt like I was right there with Stephen through every step of his basketball journey from high school to college to the NBA. I also appreciated how the author wrote about Stephen’s life in such a simple and straightforward manner without filling the book with boring facts and statistics. I expected this book to be simply about Stephen Curry’s career. What I discovered is that this is also a very inspirational story about an athlete who faced many challenges in his career and overcame every obstacle to become one of the greatest basketball players alive. I highly recommend this book for Stephen Curry fans of all ages.

'The Playbook' on Play

Kudos to Denise Fenzi and Deb Jones for collaborating to create ‘The Playbook’ on play - toy play, food play, personal play – it’s all there. Following the play-by-play provided by these two coaches, the reader is empowered to build and/or strengthen their dog’s play skills. The book is comprehensive, clearly written, extremely well organized and chock full of stepwise methods to enable you and your dog to succeed in having fun together. In addition to detailing specific methods, they highlight likely pitfalls and ways to avoid them. Numerous accompanying photos further elucidate their methodology. Play! belongs in every dog enthusiast’s library!

Teaching your dog that play is fun for both ends of the leash!

If your dog doesn't know how to play, you NEED this book! If your dog plays with toys, but not you (without a toy), then you NEED this book! If your dog plays too rough or gets too excited by toys, you NEED this book!! Play can be used in SO many ways AND it can be used IN the ring between obedience exercises to keep the dog happy and motivated. Knowing how to make play rewarding for your dog is the key. And this book gives you step by step instructions on how and where to use that key. I recommend all the books in the series. They are each a gold mine of helpful tips, tricks, and information you can use to improve the bond you have with your dog and improve their performance in the ring.

A "MUST" read!

Just as the first two books in the series showed, Fenzi and Jones are incredibly knowledgeable in dog behavior. But more importantly they break things down in a way that is easily understandable to the novice competitor. So, you learn the basis of the behavior, and then you learn how to train it and make it work for you and your dog. Learning how to use play (with food, toys, and personal play) is an essential skill necessary for building the engaged relationship that is required for a dog that enjoys working and competing with his/her owner. This book is a "must" for any dog sports competitor's library. I read it in one sitting, and continue to refer back to it frequently.

Chuck Nicklin has loved the water ever since spending his childhood days on a Massachusetts lake. When his family moved to California in the 1940s, Chuck literally immersed himself in the emerging sports of freediving and scuba diving. He became an expert spearfisherman, but it wasn’t long before he tired of spearfishing and opted to try his hand at underwater photography.
The rest, as the say, is history. Nicklin’s book, Camera Man, chronicles his adventurous life, from his early days as owner of the Diving Locker to a career as an underwater photographer for National Geographic and as a cinematographer on major motion pictures including The Deep, Never Say Never Again and The Abyss.
In Camera Man, Nicklin revisits the dawning days of scuba diving and shares stories of how his career as an underwater cameraman unfolded, from the day he became known as “the man who rode a whale,” to his adventures traveling around the world diving with and filming majestic humpback whales and fearsome-looking great white sharks.
Included are guest essays from Nicklin’s friends who’ve traveled with him, learned from him, and shared exciting adventures with him.

About the Author
Chuck Nicklin is an internationally known underwater photographer and cameraman who first started exploring the underwater world in the mid-1940s. His photos have appeared in magazines including National Geographic and he worked as a cinematographer on major motion pictures including The Deep, Never Say Never Again and The Abyss. Chuck and his wife Roz currently live in San Diego, CA.

Every SCUBA and skin diver will want to read this book!

When I was a kid living in San Diego, California, and also a skin and SCUBA diver, I used to love to go to Chuck Nicklin's Diving Locker shop.
They carried everything that one could want for the sport and the staff and Mr. Nicklin were so enthusiastic. The career I chose kept me away from diving very much as I got older, but I did perhaps 200 dives over the years. About three years ago my wife and I got certified (I was certified in 1962),
and we have 150 dives, none of which are in San Diego. I re-met Mr. Nicklin and his charming wife Roz at a big SCUBA tent sale, and he said that he was in the process of writing a book of his adventures in life.. And what adventures he has had! I had to get his book and I am half way thru it and it is truly amazing. The chapters are short and it is very easy to read and the accomplishments that this man has achieved make for exciting reading. I had no idea that he travelled so much around the world and for anyone who is a diver, you will love this book. For those of you that are not divers, you will still enjoy reading this book because you will find out things about the movie industry and the oceans that you did not have knowledge of before. There are lots of photographs that bring back fond memories of my early days of diving. Get the book.....you will love it also.

This is a fascinating book and a good read. It is divided into two principal parts

This is a fascinating book and a good read. It is divided into two principal parts. Part one titled "Adventures" relates 34 brief stories about the author's adventures in the early days of SCUBA diving and under water photography and the making of Hollywood films that had an underwater component. His participation in almost every major film from Lloyd Bridges' Sea Hunt to many James Bond films are often scary and always hilarious. The second part contains 21 remembrances written by his many friends, most of whom are also underwater film pioneers. They add a human interest side that is insightful and funny.

This is an easy to read and very enjoyable book written in a clear, informal style and you don't have to be a diver to appreciate it.

Couldn't put it down!

I am one of the fortunate many who has dived with Chuck Nicklin and consider him a friend. Although I had heard snippets and rumors of some of the amazing events in Chuck's extraordinary life from other people who know him, I had never heard the complete stories from Chuck (who is not one to dwell on himself or his past) himself. Camera Man is a rollicking account of Chuck's life as a dive pioneer and filmmaker. Fast-paced with short chapters, it's one of those books that keep you up too late as it beckons you to read "just one more" great story. Clay Coleman, Author, The Certified Diver's Handbook

Chris Roel started training Brazilian Capoeira in 2006 in San Antonio, Texas and BJJ in 2014. He currently lives in Corpus Christi where he owns and operates his own Capoeira studio with his wife and son. We will be Gingaing and Rolling Strong For Life!

My son takes Brazilian Capoeira lessons and this book helped me understand the importance of incorporating Brazilian jui-jitsu as well. Since reading this book I have incorporated the exercises at home with my son when he is not in class. This book was mainly for my son but has also peaked my interest in wanting to learn Brazilian Capoeira and Brazilian jui-jitsu as well. It certainly looks like a proven way to build discipline and get back in shape. For my son it has helped him learn more discipline and stay in shape in a time when all kids want to do is sit in doors and play video games. It was a great read. I highly recommend it.

Interesting and well written . . .

This book was very clear and well written - and interesting. Now here's the thing ... I picked up this book because I am "into" health and I'm always interested in exercise. I had no idea what it was about except that it looked interesting. I had no idea what "Capoeira Exercises" were. Ok, so this is way out of my range of skills and movement, etc. but, as I said, it was interesting and well written - and bless you if you are of a mind and body that can do it!!
