A very good read about the early life of a degenerate gambler

Late last night I finished reading part 1 of Once A Gambler: The Escape. I must give it to you Miikka “Interpol” Anttonen, you write a very capitative story of your early life. I believe you really describe the feeling of a non-belonging that a lot of young kids feels today.

You also, capture all the elements of compulsive gambling, the scary side of the game, degenerates like me and many others do recognise a lot of the decisions you made in your life, luckily things usually always end up good.

The story is exciting, basically, I started to read it and I couldn’t stop, it was as a good book should be - stretch reading from the beginning to the end. The only thing negative is that I can’t read part 2 yet!!!

Irving proves himself, once again, a garrulous and engaging raconteur in this collection of fiction and nonfiction divided into three sections: Memoirs, Fiction and Homage. In the last, while admiring the work of Gunter Grass, he notes that "Grass is never so insecure as to be polite." Given Irving's fascination with the malfunctioning or assaulted human body, one can't help feeling that he's defending his own work?both acne (in the story, "Brennbar's Rant") and genital warts (the O. Henry Prize-winning "Interior Space") figure in these pages. Sometimes, however, Irving's grotesquerie lacks the compassion with which his favorite writer, Dickens, moderated his caricatures. In the title essay (in which Irving relates his discovery of the powers of fiction-making), Piggy Sneed, the retarded garbage collector and pig farmer whose disappearance stimulates Irving's imagination, is harshly ridiculed: Sneed "smelled worse than any man I ever smelled?with the possible exception of a dead man I caught the scent of, once, in Istanbul." There are other, more engaging pieces: an amusing account of a dinner at the Reagan White House; an early, sentimental story, "Weary Kingdom," about a lonely woman; and, best of all, "The Imaginary Girlfriend," a rambling autobiographical sketch with a heavy emphasis on the mentors and rivals who shaped Irving's defining obsessions?wrestling and writing. John Irving has not been on top of his game since The Cider House Rules (LJ 6/1/85) and in an effort to showcase the old talent, Irving offers a collection of past writings. Not strictly a work of fiction, Sneed includes memoirs, short stories, and "Homages"-tributes to Charles Dickens and Gunter Grass. Written in 1967 when Irving was a student at the Iowa Writer's Workshop, "Weary Kingdom," about a middle-aged dorm mother at a Boston college, reveals a maturing writer, growing comfortable portraying the quirky aspects of his subjects that characterize his work. "The Imaginary Girlfriend," the most recent of the essays (to be illustrated with Irving's photos-not seen), outlines the parallel lines of his wrestling career and reading history. In spite of its unevenness, Sneed is recommended for fiction and literature collections based on Irving's reputation.

Trying to Save Piggy Sneed features tributes to Dickens and Gunter Grass, whose novels percolate with a political and moral courage Irving admires. It also includes six short stories, a form Irving doesn't claim as his own. Reminiscences round out the collection, from caustic recollections of an awkward dinner with former President Reagan to the title piece, in which the death of his town's garbage collector symbolically sparked the teenage Irving's desire to write.

Only for Irving fans

If you love Irving, you will want to read this eclectic collection of essays, bits of biography and short stories. If you don't know and love Irving, you will wonder what it's all about. Personally, I am a huge fan; I've read all of his novels and so this was a welcome insight into the life of one of America's treasures. The first chapter on how he became a story teller is vintage John. On another note, he definitely loves wrestling, and you are faced to read tedious round by round accounts of important matches in his life, but that's okay, because now I know where he got a lot of the foundations for Garp.
A few things stood out in this book that elevated John Irving to the status of one classy guy: his love and devotion to his sons, and he never has one bad thing to say about his ex-wife, the mother of his children. In fact he thanks her for her diligence in photographing the boys growing up and some of her shots are found in the center of the book.
Of the multitude of areas in this book, I enjoyed most a short story entitled "Interior Space" inwhich an Austrian man (who else?) laments over the sale of his house and the tree thereon. "You will not the tree down-chop." Irving truly is the master at replicating the juxtaposition of words in the dialogue of native German speakers speaking English.
As fans know, the wait between Irving's novels is unbearably long, and Piggy Snead makes for an entertaining interlude.

John Irving's Garage Sale

Take "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed" for what it is, a mismatched collection of "memoirs", short stories, and "homages" to Charles Dickens and Gunter Grass. Unless you like to read about wrestling, the memoirs provide very little true insight into Irving. Do not waste your time buying "The Imaginary Girlfriend" as that comes from this book and is mostly dedicated to Irving's lackluster wrestling career. I think I learned more about Irving in the notes after the short stories than I did by reading the memoirs.
The short stories range in quality. "Weary Kingdom" was Irving's first published work and is a long, dull story (not even the author really likes it). "Interior Space" is my favorite, but even it is not as good as some of Irving's novels.
The homages to Dickens and Grass are somewhat interesting. I decided to give "Great Expectations" a try since Irving said that's the book that really made him want to write. I doubt it will have the same effect on me.
The biggest flaw in my opinion was that the publisher put the notes AFTER the various pieces of writing. I always read those first just to get the background of the story before I read it. For example, it helped me tolerate "Weary Kingdom" when I saw that it was really Irving's first piece of published writing.
At any rate, I recommend skipping this garage sale and sticking with Irving's novels. If you read this in the hope of understanding the author better, you will be disappointed as I was.

A little of this, a bit of that

I've read all of John Irving's novels, but somehow let this book get by. Having just finished it (soon after reading A Widow For One Year), I have mixed feelings. I would love to read Irving's memoirs, but I'm more interested in his family life than all that wrestling business. One can't help imagine that there is a lot of John Irving in T.S. Garp and Johnny Wheelwright and John Berry, but Irving does not reveal this. The short stories and his comments on them are well worth it, though. When he calls one story amateurish to the point of embarrassment, I can't help but think "I only wish I could write one story as well as Irving's worst." For fans of the Irving mystique it's a must read, but for others I'd say go straight to The Pension Grillparzer.

Pithy, to the point, and great resource!

Lise has done it again! A pithy review of why and how to protect our freelance writing business. I wish I had these samples when I started writing grants for non-profits. I learned the hard way to try to get them to sing a contract not only to protect me, but also to protect them from any misunderstanding. I think dealing with a for profit business is easier to negotiate a contract because it is just good business practice!

The price is right. I got the free version and purchased the book for my Kindle Fire HD to give her support for her efforts to share great information and shorten the freelance learning curve.

Highly Recommended for Freelancers!

As someone who works with clients AND with freelancers, this was an excellent read to make sure I'm keeping up with what I should and shouldn't be doing, the pros and cons of different situations, and overall making sure my business runs smooth! Although contracts is usually a pretty dull subject, Cartwright does an excellent job of bringing the reading to life with engaging, helpful, and friendly language.

As a bonus, just finding her first suggestion under "Creating a Contract" made the book worth buying and reading. You'll have to get it to see exactly what I'm talking about :)

Lise doesn't pull any punches in this book. Expert advice on how to make sure you get paid from someone who has obviously been on the short end of that stick a few times herself. Solid tips and tactics to help you “help” you rclients to do what they are supposed to—pay you for services rendered. Make no mistake, there are clients out there who don't, some who can't and some who just won't. A solid reference guide to deal with all three of them. Another great book by Mr. Schriever

After I read this book, I reread the author's first book- Pushups in the Prayer Room. One of the ways you can tell if the author is any good is by sensing a growth in writing. I loved all three books, but this book really felt like Mr. Schriever has grown not only as an author but as a man. He tends to be almost a father figure to these girls and can never seem to come to grips to what horrid life conditions they must endure. Things we take for granted or assumed does not exist and that is a hard concept to understand. Only when he must live amongst them can he scrape the surface of what life is like for a girl in Dragon Town. The writing was excellent- you can see the development in author's writing style, but it still contains the humor we come to expect. It is one of those books you can't wait to find time to read but so sad when it's over. There were a few grammar errors, but wonder if it was due to the kindle format. I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read, perfect for the long plane trip or beach weekend.

A Must Read!

This moving book is based on true events that took place right after the biggest typhoon to ever strike land. In 2013, when Typhoon Haiyan hit, it directly affected the island, where a fictional town, Dragon Town, and the story takes place. It tells the tale of an American blogger Norm (a.k.a. Nohm/Worm), who finds himself destitute and seeking shelter in a bar called Candy Bar with a group of prostitutes known as “Taxi Girls”. The situation becomes even more interesting when a new girl name Sophar arrives to work at Candy Bar.

This story is a more personal yet no less powerful take on the effect upon individuals of large-scale poverty and the way people change when confronted with adversity and the need for survival. The characters are beautifully observed. From the naive Sophar, the brazen Taxi Girls, the madam, Mamasan, to the American blogger, we watch how they are forced to change their preconceived notions in challenging circumstances. The barriers that separate the characters slowly dissolve, especially in Sophar’s case and her relationship with the other Taxi Girls. Meanwhile, Norm is becoming increasingly aware of his own preconceived notions while being a keen observer to the Taxi Girls’ choreography of hustle.

This is my first book of the author, Norm Schriever. He reveals himself to be a master of detail and emotion in this book. Schriever recounts his story as if it is unfolding before our eyes and makes us feel as if we were there with him. His characters are so engaging that we believe in them entirely. This is a book full of humanity - allowing the readers to laugh as the Taxi Girls make fun of the American blogger, cringe as Sophar is about to go on her first “Bar Call”, root for the girls to get “The Golden Ticket”, and daydream with them as they sing Rihanna’s “Shine Bright Like A Diamond” song.

Just like the ride "Kingda Ka"

If you've never heard Norm Schriever tell a joke or a story or two or five in one sitting, you probably ought to. For me autobiographies are worth knowing the author's voice.

"The Queens of Dragon Town" is a great read for an easy weekend. Like when you're alone but want to sit with a friend to listen to their stories of the week, over coffee and bacon but they're 2-, 8- hours or countries away from you.

Or if you're wanting a crazier time in a roller coaster but you're afraid of heights.

TQDT will definitely send your emotions through that. And your belly will definitely get some exercise from laughing.

You'll read about adaptation to a culture we here in America are far too sheltered. Sheltered--I hope that's the correct term.

Norm writes about humility, grace, individuality, selfishness, friendship, human's strenght, perseverance, trust, injustice, sacrifice, deceit by power and money and during times more difficult than anyone could or should ever live through.

I felt the book was missing something. I thought there could be more. Or maybe it struck closer to home than it should have? Uncovering thoughts of choices made in life, by the people I love, to provide for the present I'm living now. It's made me think, deeply, for sure.

How living from a country so destitute, one would rather keep dragging their leg-less body instead of accepting help to get off the ground. Because pride takes over and begging on the street is a job, an effort, to make others feel better so they willingly give coins or baht notes worth nothing in America.

Money makes such a big, drastic impact. Will it ever change, the want for more materialistic life? Will it ever make our lives better or just masks whatever it is we fear we would face again or live without?

Three words: Get. The. Book.

Horrible editing

I gave it two stars instead of one because the story wasn't bad. What was horrible was the editing. Just terrible. "I stand and pull my eyes from my pocket" was just one of many. It was extremely distracting. I wish authors would take more pride in their art and not put their name on such sloppiness.

You'll love this book!

Full disclosure up front: one of the stories in this book was written by me, about my old boxer, Tater. (page 198, "Meant for Each Other"). I am relatively new to dog ownership, and reading the other 100 stories in this book has touched my heart and helped me to realize what unique personalities our doggie friends have. The dogs depicted here are funny, sweet, unselfish, clever, resourceful, loyal, and so much more. I predict you will love this book. And all royalties go to the American Humane Society. What could be better?

This is a great book of incredibly heartwarming, funny, beautiful and thought provoking stories about...cats... and their people, and the impact these cats -- all of them -- have made in the lives of their "owners" ("Staff" is more like it, LOL).

An innocent looking cat graces the front cover. Look closely -- it appears to be licking its chops in anticipation of some nefarious deed. The Foreword itself, written by Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of the American Humane Association, is upbeat, educational without being preachy, anecdotal, informative.

The Table of Contents is "The Shape Of Things To Come" indeed, beginning with "My Ornery Cat", "My Goofy Cat", "My Healer Cat", and more -- ending with "My Heroic Cat" -- yes cats too can rescue people, body, mind, heart and soul.

The cat who LOVED to waltz with his person; the cat who INSISTED on going out at 7:15 am every morning -- as it turns out -- to comfort the widow of a neighbor. Cats who healed. A cat who stole a Baby Jesus...... and re-deposited the figure in the most unlikely place.....A kleptomaniac cat who brought the whole neighborhood together by stealing from other people's houses and bringing the bounty back home with him (as the cat's owner said, they ended up knowing the shoe size of just about everyone in the neighborhood, as the cat had stolen so many shoes, and slippers). Thomas, the overweight cat who developed an absolute addiction to toast. A loving cat named Lucky who made his special needs owner think about who REALLY was the Lucky one in this relationship. And who can't help laughing when the normally cat-hating Mrs. Pitt stood up for the parsons' wife's cat even after the cat sent the ladies' auxiliary meeting into a huge tizzy!

This is not an over-sweet or sappy sentimental book -- it is a book filled with stores of mutual love, spiritual healing, wonderment and awe that will give you cause to think, laugh, cry and maybe even have a profound "aha" moment. Containing anecdotes, stories to make you laugh or cry or wonder....... and interspersed with cartoons and photos, this book is very hard to put down. Time and again it is easy to see how these cats have taught their people "valuable life lessons". An undercurrent of mutual love and human-animal interaction, heart and soul -- runs through each and every story -- these cats truly ARE "healers of" the "heart".

About the Author

Peter Finney is a 17-time winner of the Louisiana Sportswriter of the Year Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He is the author of The Fighting Tigers, 1893--1993: One Hundred Years of LSU Football and Pistol Pete: The Story of College Basketball's Greatest Star.

Peter Finney, Jr., former sportswriter for the New York Post and New York Daily News, is the recipient of the St. Francis de Sales Award from the Catholic Press Association. Since 1993, he has served as the executive editor and general manager of the Clarion Herald, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
