This book helped me pass my written test!
By T.Y.
I passed on the first try! My school's drivers ed instructor suggested I read this. The questions were very similar to the real ones! I was worried because a couple of my friends had failed but this book saved me. It's short, and just contains the 50 most common questions (which is all you really need to know). I studied for an hour or two and memorized the answers before taking it.

Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, by Randy Roberts, Johnny Smith

In 1962, boxing writers and fans considered Cassius Clay an obnoxious self-promoter, and few believed that he would become the heavyweight champion of the world. But Malcolm X, the most famous minister in the Nation of Islam—a sect many white Americans deemed a hate cult—saw the potential in Clay, not just for boxing greatness, but as a means of spreading the Nation’s message. The two became fast friends, keeping their interactions secret from the press for fear of jeopardizing Clay’s career. Clay began living a double life—a patriotic “good Negro” in public, and a radical reformer behind the scenes. Soon, however, their friendship would sour, with disastrous and far-reaching consequences.

Based on previously untapped sources, from Malcolm’s personal papers to FBI records, Blood Brothers is the first book to offer an in-depth portrait of this complex bond. Acclaimed historians Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith reconstruct the worlds that shaped Malcolm and Clay, from the boxing arenas and mosques, to postwar New York and civil rights–era Miami. In an impressively detailed account, they reveal how Malcolm molded Cassius Clay into Muhammad Ali, helping him become an international symbol of black pride and black independence. Yet when Malcolm was barred from the Nation for criticizing the philandering of its leader, Elijah Muhammad, Ali turned his back on Malcolm—a choice that tragically contributed to the latter’s assassination in February 1965.

Malcolm’s death marked the end of a critical phase of the civil rights movement, but the legacy of his friendship with Ali has endured. We inhabit a new era where the roles of entertainer and activist, of sports and politics, are more entwined than ever before. Blood Brothers is the story of how Ali redefined what it means to be a black athlete in America—after Malcolm first enlightened him. An extraordinary narrative of love and deep affection, as well as deceit, betrayal, and violence, this story is a window into the public and private lives of two of our greatest national icons, and the tumultuous period in American history that they helped to shape.

Review
Wall Street Journal, David Margolick
“[An] absorbing and provocative new book... An engrossing and important book.”

Boston Globe, Allen Barra
“A unique hybrid of race, politics, and sports; it is easy to read yet gives rise to sober reflection. It fills a gap in our understanding of one of the most fascinating relationships in American history.”

New York Times Book Review
“A rigorously researched book that gracefully pivots between the world of the ring and the racial politics of the early ‘60s.”

National Review, James Rosen
“Exhaustively researched and tautly written, Blood Brothers marks a milestone in the biographical literature of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, an invaluable addition to our understanding of America in the 1960s. In all it touches—the far-flung but interconnected worlds of race, religion, politics, sports, cities, organized crime, and the news media—this sober and detailed book, a dual biography that alternates between protagonists like a suspense novel, renders profound service. The authors unearth reams of new evidence, shine light on long-overlooked episodes, and hack away at the barnacles of mythology, thereby giving us the finest portrait yet of the doomed relationship that transformed Cassius Clay into Muhammad Ali.”

Washington Post
“Earnest and...smartly constructed.”

Los Angeles Times
“Armed with redacted FBI files and rare archival material, the historians challenge standard accounts of the friendship and use their revision to illuminate the moment when the civil rights era, anti-colonial struggles and the baby boomers' coming of age coalesced to reshape the world in ways that still resonate.... In convincing detail, Blood Brothers traces Ali's rise to international celebrity while Malcolm was stalked and harassed by the ‘Fruit of Islam,’ the paramilitary group that enforced obedience to the church.”

Dallas Morning News
“In the most detailed account to date of this fascinating bond, professors of history Randy Roberts (Purdue) and Johnny Smith (Georgia Tech) unveil a story few Americans know, arguing that Ali and Malcolm were much more than mere acquaintances; their symbiotic relationship, with Ali as pupil and Malcolm as mentor, was deeply important to each man…From beginning to end, Blood Brothers is a story of transformation.”

Washington Times
“[Blood Brothers] is shedding light on the secret friendship between boxing great Muhammad Ali and civil rights leader Malcolm X.”

New York Post
“The authors give us a thorough examination of the relationship between the two icons in the context of the black experience and the turbulent 1960s. White America blamed Malcolm for Cassius Clay’s transformation to Muhammad Ali, but the truth is more complicated, involving the split between Malcolm and the Nation of Islam. We’re brought back to the champ’s early boxing days and see how the brash Ali whom America came to know developed.”

The Times, UK
“Thanks to Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s enthralling narrative we now have a better understanding of how a complex relationship was born, and how it fell apart."

Economist’s Prospero blog
“Though their individual lives have been explored through previous books and movies, Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X delves into the close kinship these men shared, and the reasons it ultimately fell apart.”

City Journal
“The broad outlines of the Ali/Malcolm drama are well known, but Roberts and Smith emphasize how crucial each was to the other’s destiny—Ali’s as a global figure of black pride and Malcolm’s as a martyred black visionary. They provide more exhaustive detail than previously available, aided by newly released FBI files and personal papers. And they infuse the tale with sharp insights and an impending sense of tragedy... Blood Brothers reminds us of a time when an heroic image of Ali would have seemed as unlikely as the idea that Cassius Clay could beat Sonny Liston—or that a big-budget Hollywood film would someday venerate the life of Malcolm X.”

Louisville Courier-Journal
“Historians Roberts and Smith have written the first book examining the complex bond between the two men, who met in 1962 as the young Louisville boxer Cassius Clay was making a name for himself.”

Booklist, Starred review
“Roberts and Smith portray both of these courageous and controversial, inspired and inspiring men with fresh, stinging clarity, and extend our perception of the interconnectivity of race, religion, sports, and media during this violent and transformative era, which is so very germane today.”

Library Journal, Starred review
“This book offers a significant contribution to serious studies of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and the Nation of Islam.”

Publishers Weekly
“[A] provocative history.... Roberts and Smith map the relationship between the troubled icons in painstaking detail and debunk long-held assumptions about their break.... Roberts and Smith bring a fresh perspective to the story in the civil rights movement, and capture the ferment of the broader era.”

Kirkus Reviews, Starred review
“[Roberts and Smith] sharply detail Malcolm's growing disillusionment with Elijah, his heartbreak at the loss of Ali's allegiance, and the ugly dynamic within the Nation that left the defiant minister murdered. A page-turning tale from the 1960s about politics and sports and two proud, extraordinary men whose legacies endure.”

Gerald Early, Editor of the Muhammad Ali Reader and author of A Level Playing Field: African American Athletes and the Republic of Sports
“Well researched and spritely written, Blood Brothers is, by far, the most complete and detailed account of the friendship between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, and how black nationalist politics profoundly changed how black athletes saw big-time sports in America. Blood Brothers fills in important gaps for those who know the story and provides a gripping, informative history for those who do not.”

Howell Raines, former executive editor of the New York Times
“In earlier works, Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith have used their skills as professional historians to pierce the veil of myth, hero worship, and hype that mars so much sports journalism. In this illuminating joint effort, Blood Brothers tells the story of a strange friendship marked by initial affection, cold manipulation, and ultimate estrangement. They show that Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, so brave and assertive in their public lives, shared another bond stronger than friendship: fear of assassination by their spiritual mentor, Elijah Muhammad.”

Robert Lipsyte, former sports columnist for the New York Times
“There’s brilliant history in this crackling story of two men whose tragic brotherhood changed America. Absorbing and essential reading.”

Aram Goudsouzian, author of Down to the Crossroads: Civil Rights, Black Power, and the Meredith March Against Fear
“Deeply researched and compellingly written, Blood Brothers makes clear that the lives of Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X were intertwined. Each needed the other, and as their relationship careened from tenderness to tragedy, each became a global icon. Their story just pops off the page.”

Douglas Brinkley, author of Rosa Parks
“Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s Blood Brothers is a brilliantly conceived narrative linking the dayglo legacies of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. At heart, it’s the story of a fast friendship that rocked the Cold War world and forever changed the destiny of African-American history. A towering achievement!”

A choice between friendship and brotherhood
By Charlemagne
This book is written from more of a sports perspective than a black revolutionary one. It reads a bit dry, but I still recommend this for the education and information within. One will see many parallels from the civil rights movement to what is going on in the US today with police violence and pro-black movements.

Malcolm X is a long misunderstood figure in the civil rights movement. Many mainstream history books have put him as the "bad" guy next to MLK being the "good" guy. It is much more complex than that. His role in the civil rights movement is an important one to learn about, from his debates with Bayard Rustin to his clashing with the Nation Of Islam over their leadership's hypocrisy and their treatment of women.

Muhammed Ali is now seen in a much gentler way than he was back when he protested the Vietnam war. The book reveals the origins of Ali's turbulent early life and his how he created his boxing persona. His involvement with the Nation Of Islam was kept low key for a long time. In the end, he made a firm choice between his loyalty of NOI and his friendship with Malcolm.

One has to wonder if this friendship could have lasted if fame, money, religion, and ego were not huge factors. Both boxing fans and people wanting to know more about the civil rights era should check this book out.

Fascinating, engaging story about Ali and Malcolm X
By J. Silva
This excellent book paints wonderfully visual word pictures about the relationship between famed -- and now revered -- heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali and Malcolm X, the charismatic "minister" of the Nation of Islam who was assassinated by his former colleagues when he clashed with the NOI leader Elijah Muhammed. Co-authors Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith are eminently qualified to write this book, as both professional historians (Roberts is a professor at Perdue, Smith at Georgia Tech) and experienced biographers of sports figures. Using their powers of research and their connections in the world of sports, Roberts and Smith have done a superlative job of recreating the events surrounding Ali's (then Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.) rise from the slums of Louisville, KY, to the Olympic Gold Medal in light heavyweight boxing, to the heavyweight boxing world championship, which he won at age 22. Concurrently, the authors trace the life of Malcolm Little from foster care to prison to follower of Elijah Muhammed. When their paths cross, Clay and Malcolm become close friends, with Malcolm's teachings and influence leading to Clay's joining what became known in the popular press as the Black Muslims.

Racism was in the forefront of American politics in the early 1960s, with the main focus of the press on the non-violent efforts toward desegregation led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Nation of Islam and Malcolm X, however, had another view of racism -- they believed Elijah Muhammed's teaching that white people were "blue eyed Devils" who would eventually be overthrown by Allah's intervention. Far from wanting integration, they firmly believed in segregating the races.

Having experienced and suffered from racism his whole life, Clay was intrigued and drawn to Malcolm's race beliefs, but was equally drawn to the spiritual aspects of Islam. Early in their relationship, Malcolm saw through Clay's bluster and bravado to the young boxer's shrewdness and, despite his low IQ, his understanding of human nature. Malcolm knew that Clay could be a valuable spokesman for Islam, so used his position of friendship to encourage the young man's confidence and bond with him. He never believed that his disillusionment with Elijah would endanger their close friendship.

Date by date, fight by fight, meeting by meeting, Roberts and Smith hold the reader's attention throughout the few years that Clay and Malcolm were close, until just before Malcolm's spilt with Elijah and his assassination by the "Messenger's" followers.

This riveting and engaging book will hold your interest while providing a wealth of information about the time, the men, their influences, and the significant people in their lives between 1960-65. If you are interested in any or all of those subjects, don't miss this book!

A fatal relationship
By Connie (She who hikes with dogs)
Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith are historians with a passion for sports. This book embraces both the sport of boxing, the rise and fall and rise again with Cassius Clay turned Muhammad Ali and the relationship Ali had with Malcolm X, Elijah Mohammed. The civil rights movement and the rise of the Nation of Islam are in the background.

The book begins with Ali's victory at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, his interest in Islam after hearing Elijah Mohammed speak, and his rise in the boxing world. While Ali shared a troubled childhood with Malcolm X, both had different philosophies about the struggles of American blacks and their roles in the civil rights movement. Malcolm X is devoted to black supremacy. Ali just wants to win the world heavyweight championship and flaunt his greatness. Elijah Mohammed secretly vents over Malcolm's rise in the Nation of Islam (NoI) but keeps Malcolm X as one of his supreme ministers because his charm and articulation bring in many converts to the NoI. As history has shown, the NoI and the civil rights movement were at odds from the start. They were the more radical of the groups and in opposition to Martin Luther King's more pacifist ways. The FBI conducted surveillance on Malcolm X and later Ali.

The authors write in an engaging manner. By 1963 it's clear that Ali has converted, but tries to hide his affiliation with the NoI from the public. Malcolm X and Ali meet and form a friendship at a time when Malcolm X was already sensing his days with the NoI numbered, after his rather dubious comment when President Kennedy was killed in Dallas. But to me Malcolm's fascination with Ali in early 1964 seemed more as a way to save his future, rather than as a true friendship. Ali was a naive young man and Malcolm knew how to win him over, until Elijah brought Ali back to him and hurt feelings resulted.

There are many detailed boxing scenes in this book, which I breezed through. I was more interested in the political aspect of this story, and the authors delivered. Boxing was one sport that poor African-Americans could excel at, and Ali was both athlete and entertainer in front of the crowds. Ali's self-proclaimed greatness brought boxing back to life and spectators back in front of the television to watch the matches.

There is much I didn't know about Ali other than that he was a ham for the cameras. I didn't know he was an undiagnosed dyslexic. I didn't realize he was a man of mystery and often a man of contradictions. He isn't painted as the most compassionate man, either. He comes off as more of a selfish, bombastic character when compared to Malcolm X, whose personal history I knew more of thanks to Alex Haley's biography of the man, which the authors reveal was often embellished, and which Haley was working on during 1963 and 1964.

The book focuses on the years after the 1960 summer Olympics through the death of Malcolm X in 1965. A lot is covered about the civil rights movement, the growing relationship between Ali and X, and how their actions and reactions were as a result of the rising tensions in the black community under Kennedy and Johnson. While there is boxing in this narrative, this book will appeal more for the history aficionadoes.

Spoilers, I can't do this review without them.
By ocdbookreader
Cheating is involved in this book, which normally doesn't bother me because I love the drama and angst.
But sadly, in this stand-alone, it did. Maybe it's because I couldn't get past how selfish and immature Sadie, our main character is??
Maybe it's because the blurb was so misleading??
Nate, the husband, it's led the reader to believe he doesn't want her, and has become cold and cruel.
I mean if you're married and throw everything away for having 2 bad months in seven years, how do you justify that?? Easily, Sadie is SELFISH.

***Spoilers***
Stop reading if you don't want to know more.
Nate, IMOHO should of actually been cruel, not just distant towards Sadie, who he does love very much. But when it comes out that she aborted his baby 7 years ago, and never told him, I'd be PO too!!
So in the process of Nate, who's trying to get his head on straight, and not confront Sadie while he's hot headed and extremely hurt, because now Sadie is having problems getting pregnant.
Sadie decides that as whole two months is enough and wants to throw it all away for her neighbor Finn. Yes, you know she's perfect and since things around her aren't perfect, she's going to make herself feel better in Finn's strong arms and bed. Not to mention, that would at times be the marital bed.
I was so sick of hearing how perfect things were for her to turn and cheat after two months!! Then I'm not sure if it's due to the fact that Nate's father was dying, nothing much was discussed of the affair. It was like it took a back burner. As long as Sadie still wants a baby to Nate, she can go have as many affairs as she wants. It was made as no big issue. I mean this coming from a cold, unfeeling, distant husband, that the blurb leads us to believe.
But Nate is overly caring, overly affectionate, he shows his love daily. Now mind you that's approximately 2,555 days that he shoved his love, and for 60 he didn't.
I think it being a story of hypocrisy for Sadie, burns me up even more. Finn, the neighbor, who's married with a child can be her knight in shining armor. He's good enough to have an affair with and possibly a life time relationship, and perfect to Sadie. But if HER husband were doing that to her, she'd want to cut off both heads.
It's not even as if she's a 20 year old to forgive her train of thought. She's a woman.

To me it just was like stuff was just thrown together to make a book.
Love triangle. Check
Cheating wife. Check
Hot alpha male. Check
Man with issues. Check
Hidden secret, in the perfect relationship. Check.
Wrapped in a nice bow. Check.

Everyone is different, apparently I'm the out cast here with my opinion.
If you read, I hope you enjoy this book.

Burning ring of fire
By Vox Libris
Holy anxiety trip, faithful readers. Prepare yourselves, because Jessica Hawkins is going to taunt and tease and torture you with this book.

Sadie and Nathan have been together for seven years, and theirs is the perfect marriage. Sadie knows this, and she's proud of it. After being held captive to her parents' wretched marriage, she will settle for nothing less than perfection. Nathan dotes on her, he adores her, and he puts her first. Her friends, family, and co-workers envy her marriage, and they regularly tell her how lucky she is. Sadie knows that, too. Yet perhaps she has forgotten just how lucky she is.

Until she is forced to realize it.

In what feels like overnight, Nathan has withdrawn. Gone are the loving gestures. Gone is the affection. Gone is Sadie's status as the center of his life. Their heretofore agreed on time apart - Nathan has weekly bowling nights while Sadie stays home and reads - begin to feel more dangerous, sinister even. What is Nathan getting during his time away from her that takes his attention - maybe even his love - away from her?

Sadie came into this marriage a woman uncertain that love could last forever. She even told Nathan that should he want to leave her, he just needs to say so. Now that he appears to be headed in that direction, though, Sadie finds herself untethered. Her pessimism regarding marriage seems to bear fruit. She acknowledges that she does not know how to be a wife, so when she convinces herself that her husband no longer wishes to occupy that role, she resorts to what she knows. She begins to repeat the patterns of her parents' marriage.

Into this toxic situation comes Finn, a gorgeous neighbor who moves in across the hall. His attraction for Sadie is immediate and clear. But Sadie is married. As horrified and fearful as she is over Nathan, she believes in being his wife. She wants to believe in being his wife. She begins to worry that being his wife will hurt her. She begins to believe that being his wife is a job Nathan no longer wants her to have.

Jessica Hawkins has created a sort of niche for herself, writing novels about infidelity. Her Cityscape series (Come Undone, Come Alive, Come Together) and Night Fever series take different looks at a woman's unfaithfulness. Slip of the Tongue goes in another direction, with a woman not purposefully or actively seeking to cheat but nonetheless feeling compelled to find in another man what she fears she has lost with her husband.

This is not always an easy or comfortable book to read. You feel Sadie's confusion and anger and sense of betrayal. You feel her attraction to Finn and her fears over what that means. You will want to shout at her to stop; you will want to reach into the book, grab her arm, and pull her away from the mistakes she seems intent on making. Even though Hawkins tells this story through Sadie's eyes, you learn about Nathan. He reveals himself and his own fears for his marriage, most of which Sadie is oblivious to. Nathan lets us see Sadie the Wife, and it is not always flattering. As she increasingly tries to convince herself that Nathan is wrong, she loses sight of her own complicity. She is so intent on justifying her behavior that she willfully ignores certain truths.

Of course, if Jessica Hawkins writes it, you can be sure that there are some scorching hot sexy times. There is one scene in a public area that is just so delicious, it will cause you to squeeze your thighs together so hard that you will cut off your blood supply.

I loved this book, even with the ulcer I thought it would give me, even with the discomfort Hawkins caused. It made me cry and it made me quiver.

Please read this one, and then hit up the comments and let me know your thoughts.

Absolutely hated Sadie, she was selfish and expected everyone's world to revolve around her. Could not like her at all. Her husband ignored her and wouldn't speak to her, she thought he was having an affair and never asked him or confronted him about. What does she do she cheats on him with the neighbor then the husband finds out and he just takes her back, YEAH RIGHT. Seven years of marriage and they hit a rough patch of two months and she never pushes the issue of whats bothering him. My husband won't speak to me I am definitely going to find out what's going on. Not a good read

Review
At first glance, Fieldhouse, by Scott Novosel appears to be a basketball story. And it is a story about basketball. After three tryouts as a walk-on player with the Kansas Jayhawks, Novosel finally succeeds in his senior year. He plays fifteen games for Coach Roy Williams and alongside future NBA players.
It's also more than a basketball story. It s an underdog story. In the three years prior to Novosel making the team, no walk-on had been selected. His perseverance and dogged pursuit of his dream actually pays off.
But even more than a basketball story, and an underdog story, it's really about all the people who helped make Novosel's dream come true. The book is filled with fun and interesting characters, and they are my favorite part of it; cheering Novosel on even when his dream seems crazy and unobtainable. His parents, for example, worry that young Novosel is setting his sights too high, but agree they prefer that to him setting them too low. Fellow players help him train so they can benefit from his positive attitude, Phog Allen's son makes several appearances, and his brothers both do their best to help.
Great for all ages, and not just for sports fans.
--JoCo Library

I found Fieldhouse to be very educational. Scott Novosel is living proof that dreams can come true! Jayhawk fans will enjoy this!
--Ted Owens, Two time NCAA Final Four Head Coach

Fieldhouse is the story of overcoming adversity, making friends, and following your dreams! Scott tells a compelling story of his journey to the floor of the Allen Fieldhouse, and Sam Sharpe puts the story into beautiful comic form.
--Radiator Comics

From the Back Cover

"As entertaining as it is inspiring, Fieldhouse is full of positive energy!"
--Bill Self, NCAA Champion Head Coach

"Scott Novosel brings to life the magic of Allen Fieldhouse and Kansas Basketball. Dreams do come true!"
--Danny Manning, NCAA Champion/Legend

"Fieldhouse is a magical little story about a young person refusing to give up on his dreams. You never know how things will work out in the end, the important thing is to just keep trying and believing."
--New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski and his 10-year-old daughter, Katie

RICK “SHAQ” GOLDSTEIN SAYS: “THE PERFECT BOOK TO HELP YOU INSPIRE YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS… WHILE RE-INSPIRING YOURSELF!”
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
As a lifetime self-induced motivator in sports and later in sales… and then as I became a sales manager… and then the owner of my own company…one of my favorite mantras… that I shared with the world was… “HAPPY… ARE… DREAMERS… THAT DREAM… BUT ARE WILLING… TO PAY THE PRICE… TO MAKE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE!”

That self-proclaimed mantra… is the absolute definition of the author… Scott Novosel… and the true life story described in this book’s… definitive motivational pages. From the time Scott was a child… he dreamed of playing college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks… even handwriting a youthful letter of introduction to coach Roy Williams. As beautiful as the lifetime quest… that is passed on to the reader… through words formed in the very heartbeat of Scott’s soul… the emotional exuberance of graphic-comic-like- art… created by Sam Sharpe… creates a story-medium… that has words and art… beating like two hearts in one. Potential readers will become so ensconced… in the story… and the vibrant colors… that at times you forget whether you’re reading a book… or watching a Technicolor cartoon.

The beauty of the story … and I’m absorbing the story on numerous fronts. I’m viewing it as a Grandfather… who once had similar childhood dreams… except with St. Johns University… and then… the Dodgers and Lakers… I’m reminiscing as a Father how I always tried to fertilize my son’s boyhood dreams… and I’m also fervently grasping not only the content… but the… youthful “curbside” appeal… as a tool to help… not only to motivate… but to prepare… my young Granddaughters… for the failures… that everyone faces along the road to the mountain top of success. And Scott’s… numerous… increasingly sad… obstacles… to his dreams… are just as important… as his eventual success. But… he learned along the way… that the complete effort… he invested… in his quest… made him a success… even if the ultimate dream… fluttered away… just out of his grasp… for eternity.

The road of Scott’s life with loving Parents… siblings… and a proud Grandpa who likes to reminisce about his own long gone sports glory days (note: I’ve been told by a very reliable source that I am quite similar… and I agree)… all add to the “plausibility”… of using this book as a loving “smooth as silk” teaching tool… without coming off as a “pushy” adult.

From the very beginning… at night… while one person in Scott’s childhood home is trying to invent something in the garage… another is wailing away on a guitar… and another is searching for a Zen-like utopia… Scott sneaks out of his bedroom window and breaks into the Kansas Jayhawk gym… and eventually gets nabbed by the cops. When I was a child I snuck out of my bedroom window because I had the flu and my Mother wouldn’t let me play… and I ran almost two miles… played in the game and we won the championship. If Scott’s story was modernized… someone would have been playing video games… or fooling around with a smartphone. Those are called choices… and that in my humble son-Father-Grandfather-roles… is where the teaching with this book can begin.

Another old saying of mine… “Everybody wants what you have… but they don’t want to do what you did… to get it!” Scott… dreamed… he sacrificed… he overcame many obstacles… both mental and physical… and he attained his childhood dream… of playing for the Jayhawks! What a wonderful story.

Full Disclosure: After reading a number of my other reviews the author showed the same determination he used to achieve his dreams… in tracking me down… and sent me a copy of his book to review. As I only give honest heartfelt reviews… I want to thank you Scott… as this story touched me. P.S. If this is made into a movie and your Grandpa isn’t available I’m your guy. By the way did I ever tell you about the time when I was nineteen-years-old on a military team and I played against Pistol Pete?

A must read for any person with a dream!
By Terri Jacobson
I purchased this book for several reasons. A few of the reasons were my love of The University of Kansas, KU Men's basketball and Allen Fieldhouse. Also, I am a Jayhawk at heart, class of '91. I recently turned 50 and am excitedly expecting two grandchildren in the next few months. I had heard of the book and decided I needed it for the book collection for the future grandchildren. I received it in the mail yesterday. The front cover was enticing. I love anything based on a true story! I turned the book over and took the time to read the reviews. How could Bill Self and Danny Manny possibly be wrong about a review. I realized at this point, the book was for ME and then for the future grandchildren.... I suspect I will need to buy a few more copies. First, I went through the book, taking in the graphics. Scott Novosel and Sam Sharpe put blood, sweat and tears into every page. I could feel the roar of the crowd on a game night. Literally felt the atmosphere of Allen Fieldhouse jump off the pages. Next, I went through and read the book. Perseverance poured out of each page. A child and a dream, we all have them. But when you have inspiration along the way, those dreams come to life. Nothing in life is easy. Practice, practice, practice, then repeat. "Do you think you can do it?" and "Keep reaching for the stars and someday, you just might grab one..." This book takes you through the world of life all in a basketball dream. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Wow, such a great little story. I liked the 'sporty' aspect and the 'holistic' aspect. Children don't worry so much about colours and race. Very impressed.

Well Designed and Thought Out Collector's Item
By Valynn
This is a great little piece of collector's memorabilia. Well thought out, and designed, it's not fake looking or cheaply done, it looks legitimate. It's a great little perusal of the cities which we all imagined as kids, and now someone else has put it in a guide.

still a cool "Guide" to the to imaginary cities
By B Lee
Please NOTE.... This is ONE book. The two cities are presented back to back and upside down.

Overall, still a cool "Guide" to the to imaginary cities..... Makes the areas come alive. Good for fans of the movie (not the best superhero movie but better than most critics' overall reviews) and/or Batman and Superman in general.

Underwater Potholer: A Cave Diver's Memories (Whittles Dive), by Duncan Price

Duncan’s curiosity has got him into a lot of tight spots – quite literally!  As a teenager, Duncan really wanted to be an astronaut but took to the exploration of inner space instead.  Only a dozen men might have stood on the moon but Duncan has squeezed into many places that no one has ever been before, and some places that no one is ever likely to go again (probably for a very good reason).  These memoirs recount the author’s misadventures during his thirty-year involvement with caving and cave diving beginning with student antics in the caves of the Mendip Hills to a hair raising escape from deep beneath an English stately home. Along the way we are treated to a rollercoaster of emotions – from the joys of discovering new caves to the sadness of losing close friends. Duncan tells his tales without holding back, often making light of quite serious situations: cave-ins, serious illness and an embarrassing incident with a tick. There are tears and laughter, often at the same time: who else would perform an animal impression with a suspected metatarsal fracture?  We dive beneath Welsh valleys, Yorkshire Dales and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are shark attacks, unexploded bombs and secret nuclear research facilities. Technical concepts and jargon are explained clearly and concisely so the reader can follow Duncan into the depths. These stories are a treat for anyone interested in exploration, above or below ground, over or underwater. People often tell Duncan that he must be ‘mad’ to go cave diving – read this and judge for yourself…

Review
'...a welcome addition to the small number of well-written cavers' memoirs in English... ...there are flashes of understated humor or drama'. NSS News -------------------- '...this book is a collection of those tales - some funny, some sad - but all of them incredible. A great read and a book I have gone back to again and again - highly recommended'. Scottish Diver -------------------- '...recounts his 30-plus years exploring places a few of us will dare to go. ...read Duncan's book: there are a staggering number of caverns, caves and systems lurking beneath our beautiful countryside. ...a substantive piece of work written in an accessible way. It oozes with passion for a sport that is mysterious and largely ignored by the public, business and mainstream media. Duncan Price's book shines on some much-needed light on his underground world'. British Diver -------------------- '...Duncan Price is clearly addicted to his chosen pursuit, there is also something addictive about his book - and it creeps up on you. The book is nicely written... There are episodes that make you laugh aloud...' Diver -------------------- '...a hugely entertaining account of his life. Caver-autobiographies are rare...yet are so entertaining when written by someone who has done so much. Underwater Potholer: thoroughly recommended'. Descent

Do not do it, but do read it.
By William Mixon
Underwater Potholer: A Cave Diver's Memoirs, by Duncan Price. Whittles Publishing, Scotland, 2015. ISBN 978-184995-158-6. 6.5 by 9.5 inches, 185 pages, softbound. £18.99, $24.95.
"Cave diving is dangerous—do not do it. Remember I told you so. Everything else I say is bollocks!"
This book is a welcome addition to the small number of well-written cavers' memoirs in English, most of which have come from British cavers. Duncan Price has had a long and active career in cave diving, and he has worked with pretty much all of the other British cave divers I've ever heard of. Most of his diving has been sump diving in the UK, especially in the part of it where w is a vowel. But he has also laid new line in France and the US. Sometimes the blow-by-blows of some of his more complicated sump dives get a bit tedious, but there are flashes of understated humor or drama. Some cave maps can help with the geography, but they are all grouped together as pages XI–XIX, apparently as an afterthought. The sixteen unnumbered pages of color photos could have used a lot of adjustment. But these production problems do not detract seriously from enjoyment of the book.
Besides sump diving, which often includes difficult dry caving to reach the sump, Price has done tri-mix diving, rebreather diving, and scooter diving, despite the fact that his only formal training certification is from the British Sub-Aqua Club—for snorkeling. A lot of cave divers will be amused, or not, by a certain cavalier attitude about equipment. "One of my regulators started free-flowing on account of the cold water even before I'd set off; I hit it against a rock at the entrance until it stopped leaking and then headed into the cave." He did a dive using a home-made rebreather borrowed from Rick Stanton after receiving instruction in its use: breathe in, breathe out, add gas as required.
Do not do it, but do read it.—Bill Mixon
