Brilliant backpacking guide! I have been recently very interested in taking a backpacking trip. I found this book and was very excited to read it. Yes, Yes, Yes! Everything I had personally hoped-- and more!

Yesterday, when "Calamity" arrived in the mail I promised myself that I would be in control and only read it after I finished my work and school assignments however as soon as I picked it up to "read just a few pages" I knew that I had made a fickle promise that couldn't be kept.

Not only did this book meet my expectations, but very much surpassed them in nearly every way. If you've read the first two books in the "Reckoners" series you are probably already a fan. . . if you haven't yet. . .stop reading this review immediately and head to the nearest local library or make an investment and buy the whole trilogy on Amazon.

Not everyone likes superhero/antihero books. . . but this isn't just one of those. Brandon's Sanderson's books are about as far from cookie-cutter stories as you can get and "Calamity" really has a little something for everyone. Action, spy skills, drama, romance, and a compelling story-line.

This, the final book in the trilogy, brings back all of our favorite characters from the first two books, and introduces a few new ones as well. Although we see some of the comedic humor an banter that we saw in the first two books, the tone is fairly dark as David, Megan, Cody and Abraham work to save a good person from the madness he's experiencing and the atrocities that he's committing while under the influence of Calamity.

I'll freely admit that I am not the best at sleuthing out surprises and twists before they happen, but I honestly was taken for a wild ride as I was caught off guard time and time again by the intricate twists that Brandon Sanderson wove into the story.

As you read the final pages I can almost guarantee that you'll get a chill go up your spine, and shed a silent tear as you find both perfect (almost) fulfillment in the ending of a fantastic series and a deep sadness in the realization that something great has finally come to its end.

My only real complaint with this book is that there are possibilities and side-stories that are entertained (and I really wanted to see explored) that he never really gets into (I'm not going to tell you where but if you watch for them you will find them). I felt like it was kind of like teasing a baby with a sweet that they can see (and really want) but can't have. However, I would encourage you to not focus on those failings because you'll enjoy the story more if you just let it carry you along. That said, I was still more than satisfied by this ending than with 99% of the other endings that I've read.

Liking the ending as much as I did was probably in part due to my personal hopes as to what would happen. I realize that everyone who reads this has slightly different expectations, and has their own hopes and desires. In writing this review I am not guaranteeing/certifying that you will love it, but rather telling you that I did and that I truly think that Brandon Sanderson did a great job of wrapping up a compelling series.

I've read a lot of books (1000+) and I can honestly say that there are very few series/books that I would recommend more highly then this one. . . especially after absolutely loving "Calamity" as much as I did. In summary: great book, awesome story, fantastic surprises-- loved it and would highly recommend!

Great book with lukewarm conclusion

If you've read the first two Reckoners books you're going to read this one anyway, and you won't regret it. As a whole the trilogy is great, and the first 75% of this book is great. Even though it's marketed as YA I thoroughly enjoy it as an adult; it's "lighter" than Brandon's other fantasy, but still written intelligently with an engaging, generally well-paced plot and action and fantastic world building.

Unfortunately the end of this book (which is also the end of the trilogy) felt rushed (not pacing-wise, but development-wise) and failed to answer several fundamental questions about Calamity and the Epics. This is a standalone trilogy not set in Brandon's Cosmere, so I expected the end to be wrapped up neatly. Instead you're left with a mostly satisfying plot resolution, but an entire list of questions that are never actually answered. I enjoyed the book but was disappointed by the ending, it could have used a few more chapters to fully develop the conclusion and answer the questions.

I think this is the first Brandon Sanderson book that when I was done I just wasn’t sure what or even how to rate it. “I feel, like a barrel of green ducks at a Fourth of July parade.”

Why you ask am I having so much trouble deciding? Well I’ll tell you….it wasn’t like the ending in The Hero Of Ages the only other completed trilogy by him that I have to compare it too.

But, you’re probably thinking that isn’t fair, this is a completely different trilogy. And I agree with you there. This is a completely different and new trilogy and it is good that he hasn’t fallen into predictable patterns. But I expected more answers, more closure and maybe a more defined ending. For specifically David’s story there are most of those things but for some of the other aspects I ended up having even more questions than I started with. Especially regarding Calamity the history of his coming, the purpose, why (view spoiler) I WANTED TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS and I still don’t.

I really loved about 85% of this book. It was everything I expected from the Reckoners series. There was a lot of action, bad metaphors and similes, funny characters, emotional moments, a moving city and bad kissing….

“That’s unfair,” I said. “You didn’t complain last night.”
“You stuck your tongue in my ear, David.”
“That’s way romantic. Saw it in a movie once. It’s like…a passionate wet willie.”***

I was really happy that the original crew was back together for the most part. I really missed Cody and Abraham in Firelight, but add those two and Mizzy all together and it was hilarious. Sure they are trying to save the world and being hunted by Prof but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t funny times galore throughout the entire book.

Cody and his plethora of stories, most of which we all know are totally untrue

“Why not? Seems like you’re pretty good at making things up.”
He pointed at me. “I’ve punched men for wisecracks like that.” He paused. “Of course, most were Scots.”
“Your own kind?” I asked. “Why would you fight other Scots?”
“Lad, you don’t know much about us, do you?”
“Only what you’ve told me.”
“Well, I guess you know a heap of things then. Just none of them useful.”***

Mizzy and her exuberance mixed with some snark and sarcasm sometimes.

***"Who would have thought that love and hate would be so similar, you know?”
“Who?” Mizzy said. “Like, basically every philosopher to ever live.”
“What, really?”
“Yeaaah. Bunch of rock songs too.”
“Wow.”
“You know, the fact that you were educated in a gun factory kinda shows sometimes, David.”***

Abraham with his mysterious past….That is one of those things I really wanted a little more info on. And then there is David and Megan to round out the crew with David in a new position of leadership. It looks good on him and I like the new relationship dynamic between Megan and David, they totally work well together and finish each other’s metaphors. They also get just a few tender moments that made me feel all warm and squishy inside.

***“I’m glad you’re not the same Megan. I don’t want you to be the same. My Megan is a sunrise, always changing, but beautiful the entire time.”
She teared up. “That…” She breathed in. “Wow. Aren’t you supposed to be bad at this?”
“Well, you know what they say,” I told her, grinning. “Even a clock that runs fast is still right twice a day.”
“Actually…You know what, never mind. Thank you.”***

There is the addition of one reluctant team member that I was pretty excited for and that is Nighthawk….because the guy that makes all those gadgets the Reckoners have been using has a pretty interesting story and I did like his addition into the story. He added some history with Prof, a great personal history and some very cool and wonderful new toys to play with.

There is a ton of action throughout and some very cool ideas including a new city. Really worldbuiling is something that Sanderson is masterful at and I’m never disappointed with the new ideas that he comes up with. A city that moves for instance….but it doesn’t fly if that is what you are thinking and the way it moves is brilliant and original in itself. BRAVO on that for sure.

Also Megan and what she is really capable of was another thing that completely WOWed me in this and it was incredibly cool. She has one of the absolutely coolest powers imaginable and I was so glad that we got to explore that in this. I wonder what she will become capable of doing over time. Like could she perhaps put an entire person in another reality permanently??? Because there is one person I would like to give a chance in that other reality.

Now to why I’m so Torn. As I mention about lack of closure on a few story points that I thought were pretty important. I didn’t leave this feeling like everything in this world was done. I was left feeling like there are more stories to be told here. While David’s story is definitely done Sanderson has said that he may revisit this world down the road but it will be awhile because he has a lot of other writing plans at the moment.

I loved the Fringe factor of the various realities via Megan but I’m going to say that I really didn’t enjoy the Calamity of it all. As a character/villain he wasn’t as fleshed out as some of the others that I’ve seen in Sanderson’s work and that is why I was disappointed. He was a whiney spoiled scared child who lashed out at others and watched the destruction. I wanted to know so much more about his motivations and all the questions I asked in the above section spoiler. I’m not entirely sure what I expected but he definitely wasn’t it and while a good twist overall I think I might have actually hated it. *Ducks for cover against flying tomotos*

TO END ON A HIGH NOTE - I adored the epilogue and I’m going to say I was really surprised by what we found in the alternate reality. I didn’t see that coming for a second and MY JAW DROPPED TO THE GROUND….I might have even gotten a bit teary eyed although I swore to those around me it was just allergies. It was a perfect and wonderful way to end David’s story.

Audio Note: MacLeod Andrews does a perfect performance of this and made David especially come to life but was also great with the entire cast of characters.

We're planning to go fishing next month and since I don't know anything about fishing at all, I gave this book a go. It's hard to judge the effectiveness of the tips since I have not actually applied them yet but the instructions were written in a clear and comprehensible manner so I'm hoping I could pick them up easily by next month. I did try the "how to tie a fishing knot" and I was able to learn it fast. Like I said, instructions were clear so I expect to learn everything else fast, too.

Informative. I read it because I thought it might be something fun to do with my nieces. This book will guide you through the basics of fishing, other methods of catching fish and how to tie a fishing knot. Overall, this was a very useful book for me.

About the Author
It is difficult to imagine the great wilderness that existed in the United States before the modern age, and yet we are only 100-some years removed from a land that was densely populated — with forests and animals. Saxton Pope had the benefit of contact with one of the last members of the Yahi tribe in California, and from him he learned and perfected the art of bow hunting. His incomparable 1922 guide, Hunting with the Bow and Arrow, reflects both the close relationship Pope shared with that Yahi tribesman and a bygone era that is today emulated by the Pope and Young Club.

A classic archery title

I'm not sure what the previous reviewer expected, but meanwhile, back on earth...

This is a classic archery text, written by Ishi's physician, Dr. Saxton Pope, one of the namesakes of archery's Pope and Young Club. Taught to hunt by Ishi, Pope details the making of bows and arrows pre-1925 as well as hunting various game animals with them. A wonderful book from one of the grandfathers of making wooden bows as well as modern bowhunting.

Excellent book!!! I read this book as a young man and it helped me then to appreciate the history and art of a traditional archery --a sport that I had already loved.Saxton Pope did everyone a great favor in writing of his friendship with Ishi(the last of the Yani tribe)and of his companions, trying to emulate and improve on what the native master had taught them.I ordered this again after losing my original copy years ago, and found it revived my appreciation of this wonderful sport yet again.I have started using the information and techniques this time around to make arrows and soon a bow with my son.

The Best Book for Beginners and oldsters

Hunting with the Bow and Arrow was the first book I read on archery and hunting with the bow and arrow. I first read it more than 60 years ago when I was approximately 14 years of age. From it I became hooked on archery. I bought a reflex bow from a Penny's catalog and was off to the races. I learned to shoot from the book,starting at 10 feet and working my way back until I could hit a leaf in a tree. After this I went for squirrels. We were fortunate enough to live in a heavily wooded area that was rampant with squirrels. The first time I went out, my father said, "Son you are never going to get anything with that bow". Well I still remember the first shot I made. It was at a squirrel that was trapsing along a vine way approximately 20' above my head. When he saw me he took off and I shot. I don't know who was more suprised that I hit him, me or the squirrel. Well, I got five squirrels that outing and after that only hunted with my bow and arrows, which I also learned to make. Since that time I have gotten deer and other small game. I love now, at the age of 71 to make my own arrows, my own bows from osage orange and to tan the hides of the game I get.

Yes it was and is the greatest book one could read on hunting with the bow and arrow.

“You’re completely crazy,” she accuses me.

“Oh, Emma, stop. We’re in our hometown, surrounded by friends and family. There’s someone we know around every corner; nothing’s going to happen to us.”
“Don’t say that! You’ll jinx yourself!” she scolds me. “I hope you come to your senses by tomorrow,” she adds on her way out.

Danny's voice makes me jump. "Please tell me you're not here looking for clues about the murder--and especially that I didn't just hear you talking about committing a crime."
"A crime ...? I'm not going to kill anyone; I just want to get a door open," I protest. "And what are you doing here, anyway?" I ask, while shooting an annoyed look at Emma.
"Sorry, I didn't get a chance to warn you."

I see Riley who has just walked in. She comes over to us, and as always, she's strutting like she's on a fashion runway.

ONCE UPON A WINTER NIGHT

Blue Hills is a picturesque city where life is good all year round. Ally happily fills her days with work—her successful blog—and family and friends. When she and her friends head out to the woods for the annual Winter Night festival, she cannot even imagine the surprises it holds in store. My uncle, George, is the chief of police, and he’s not exactly enthusiastic about my tendency to pry into situations that are none of my business, as he reminds me all the time. So, no surprise when he arrives a half-hour later and the first words out of his mouth are: “How did you manage to get yourself mixed up in another murder?”
“Murder …? ”It’s not like the idea hadn’t crossed my mind, but I was sincerely hoping this was an accident.
“We can’t be positive, but according to the initial findings of the investigation, the way the body was positioned does not indicate an accident. Are you all right?” he enquires, more gently.
Uncle George sees Emma and me pretty often since we’re friends with his daughter, Isabella. Deep down, he cares about us more than he lets on.
“Don’t worry,” I answer with a reassuring smile.
“I know you—so of course I’m worried. Danny, you’re responsible for her. I don’t want her getting all tangled up in this as usual.”
“I can promise nothing,” Danny answers, but I’m not in the mood to laugh.

The mystery is solved in each book, however, it would be better to read then in order to enjoy some threads that run from book to book.

This is a short book (12 chapters) and I read it in about 2 hours. Ally Graves writes a successful blog for the newspaper in the town of Blue Hills. She had written a blog post about a successful author, stating that he didn't actually do the research for his historical novels. When the author's assistant is murdered during a book fair, she is one of the people under suspicion. She really had nothing to do with the murder, and sets out to discover who is. I enjoyed the book, Ally isn't totally ditzy like so many "heroines" are in cozy mysteries. I didn't see too many spelling errors, and the book was tightly written. If it had been longer, it would have been due to "filler". I would like to read the next book in the series, and I don't do that too often.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery that keeps you guessing Once I started reading I did not want to put it down. I enjoyed it very much.

This lost classic, originally published in 1961, combines his evocative memoirs of Vermont fishing expeditions with practical directions for fly-tying. The author’s wife, artist Maxine Atherton, notes in her introduction that in addition to his skills as an accomplished artist and fine sportsman John Atherton was a romantic realist, whose exuberant outbursts of wonder over natural phenomena celebrated our planet’s everyday magic. Indeed, Atherton’s work was featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1943 exhibition of American Realists and Magic Realists. On a more practical note, Maxine Atherton adds that the Impressionistic fly patterns such as those featured in this book have worked wonders for her fishing, fooling trout in rivers throughout North America and Europe.

About the Author
John Atherton first gained fame after moving from San Francisco to New York City to stake his claim as a commercial artist. Encouraged by a fellow artist, Atherton eventually moved away from the commercial art scene and became immersed in the realist approach to painting landscapes. Atherton would go on to win several prestigious awards during the Second World War for his patriotic artwork, at which point he went on to create covers for numerous publications, most notably "The Saturday Evening Post." Along with his many works of art, Atherton became famous among the fly-fishing community for his beautiful fly patterns. He lived in Arlington, Vermont.

The Fly and the Fish

Though this book is an oldie, I enjoyed it nevertheless. The author covers all aspects of the sport as it was in his time and does it in a thorough and interesting way.

EXCELLENT BOOK ... THE FLY AND THE FISH, JOHN ATHERTON IS ONE OF A KIND..

I was an aquaintance of jack Atherton...he was an uncle of Don Harger, Salem, Oregon, who was a custom fly tier, with special interest in Steelhead flies and fishing, and an author appearing in Field and Stream, for example. I had a first edition FLY AND THE FSH but loaned it to someone. The paperback The fly and the Fish has been a gift for friends and when the price changed, I bought another copy which I read a little every day, then repeat reading again...

THE FLY AND THE FISH BY JOHN ATHERTON IS A GREAT READ FOR FLY TIERS AND FISHERMEN... JOHN WAS A GREAT ARTIST AS WELL, AND HIS SERIES OF FLIES ARE GREAT....

Inspiring classic

This is an oldie book - from the era of cane rods, silk lines and gut leaders - but it has aged surprisingly well.

It will not do as an introductory text for a fly fishing newcomer (and it was never intended as such) but it contains genuine gems of wisdom to a serious fisherman and fly dresser.

The fly tying sections by themselves are worth read - the simple observations of a award winning painter on fly design are as inspiring now as they were 60 years ago. I wish this were the case with current fly dressing writers, who seem to be creating hyped up "breakthrough" fly patterns on weekly basis, all equaly destined for obscurity.

A fast, funny and, ultimately, poignant tale of chasing the Hollywood dream

I loved this Kindle Single. It's a fast read and Pollack keeps the reader completely entertained and moving from page to page. It's also a Hollywood experience that is real and hard and wise and funny, and in the end, poignant. It's about chasing your dream and managing a marriage, all told with Pollack's self-deprecating, witty prose. I especially love that he is willing to deeply excavate his own shortcomings and lay them out there for all of us to look at. This is a real Hollywood story. This should be required reading for every young person moving to Hollywood to nakedly and naively chase their dream.

Compulsively Readable, Gutbustingly Funny

I inhaled this book in one ravenous gulp. Acclaimed novelist Neal Pollack's tale of trying to make it as a writer in Hollywood is trenchantly observed and gutbustingly funny. If you want to know what it's really like to NOT make it in Hollywood, this is the book for you. When he's not struggling to adapt his life story into a TV series or get a foot in the door at HBO, Neal is navigating the very particular local world of LA hipsters, sky-high rentals and precious preschools and telling it like it really is (and I know, I live there). LA is full of shiny white teeth -- lovely when they're smiling at you, not so pleasant when they're bared. I still don't believe he can't succeed here -- anyone who writes a book as brilliant as this has a place in this town -- but I get that mishaps and setbacks can only be suffered for so long.

Bottom line: An instant classic, to be filed next to Nathanael West's Day of the Locust, Michael Tolkin's The Player, and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Pat Hobby Stories.

" It's also about bad timing -- in life and in creative pursuits

Neal Pollack's new memoir is an endearing balm for anyone who's ever died a little trying to make something happen. It's about failure, yes, but it's also about figuring out what really matters. It's for any writer who has ever dreamed of having their life stories played out on a screen but who hasn't considered the spiritual, mental and emotional toll of trying to make it "big." It's also about bad timing -- in life and in creative pursuits.

For me, the timing for this book was just right -- on the heels of a personal professional failure. But I don't think I'm going to have to immerse myself in the entire failure memoir genre now. It was enough to read this one about Neal, already famous-but-not-quite, and his Hollywood career's spectacular demise. Short, funny, sad. My favorite kind of writer -- he does it so you don't have to.
