The reality is that even retirees circumnavigating full-time keep their boat in port half of the year because of the demands of cyclone season. There is no good way to elude the November to April cyclone season that dominates 60 percent of the trade-wind circumnavigation route. The mad rush from the eastern Caribbean to the “safe” ports in New Zealand and Australia in a single calendar year is misguided. It sets cruisers up for hard, upwind ocean passages in future years and saps the resolve of their crews. A better solution is to haul out their boats in the South Pacific and fly back to their homes in the developed world during the cyclone season. It makes more sense to keep one’s job and home and take annual two-to-six month leaves of absences to move the boat forward during the cruising season. This allows the sailors to earn more outside the cruising season. Further, they can maintain the careers and businesses which they have built over many years. Further, cruisers still have a job or business to come back to if they decide that the cruise is not for them. Pursuing a part-time circumnavigation is likely to be far less costly to cruisers’ long-term earnings than totally severing ties to one’s job or business. Going back to their homes on land is much more comfortable than living aboard, while waiting for cyclone season to pass. The most modest land-based accommodations are typically more comfortable than the most luxurious sailboat in port. Finally, part-time circumnavigations avoid many problems with educating school age children and obtaining necessary parts. A Must-Read for Anyone Contemplating Cruising Long Distances on a Sailboat

My wife and I are full-time liveaboards and are presently on the hard in St. Augustine, FL. We have been on the boat (48 foot cutter) for 4+ years now and have just come to the conclusion that we may not realize our plans to circumnavigate for more than one of the reasons you cite in your book. Most of what you have written about applies to us! We were part of the Blue Water rally in 2010 as crew on Moonshadow of London when we met Scott Adam, owner of SV Quest. It was in the bar at the marina in Phuket and he asked if we would crew with him - we declined, thankfully. When I learned of the hijacking and deaths of Scott, Jean, Bob Riggle and Phyllis McKay I was devastated. This caused us to conclude that going under Africa was a better option than passing the Horn of Africa. A friend and US sailor on the rally, Steve Siguaw, wrote "Voyage Into Hell" which is about that Blue Water Rally and all that went on leading up to and after the Quest disaster.

Your book is remarkable in how much information you have provided in a short work. Part-time circumnavigation is a good idea and we were crew on Moonshadow of London whose owner was doing just that until the Quest disaster happened. We sailed with him on two legs - one from Panama to Galapagos and the other from Cairns to Phuket. He would join the Blue Water Rally for just a leg then park the boat (Oyster 47) until the next rally in two years time. So the idea of part-time circumnavigation is not new to me.

I made some notes on grammar and content in case you want that: Page 34 I believe the Agulhas current is on the east coast of Africa; Page 38 "cover" should be "over"; Page 41 "one more" is not a hyphenated phrase.

After studying the routes and weather constraints for years to do a circumnavigation, I wish I had read your book first. You have provided a one-stop place for strategic planning and a no romance view of what it takes. I wasn't sure why you devoted so many pages to comparing climbing Everest to a circumnavigation and addressing safety concerns - I don't think the two are similar enough to make the comparison useful for decision making and it's not and either/or choice in life - at least for me.

We were in the Bahamas this spring and found what you say about shipping to offshore places to be absolutely true. Also, when in Bali with Moonshadow we had to get some capacitors for the watermaker motor and DHL came through but the local folks got their cut and delivery was clouded with uncertainty. You offer a very good alternative with airline flights for crew or captain to bring things if feasible.

We don't have kids so can't comment much about cruising with children but my experience has been that they tend to do better than their counterparts in terms of socialization and life skills from the small sample I have been close to with cruiser friends.

I recommend this book for anyone contemplating setting off in a sailboat for either a circumnavigation or just a cruising life so that the romance versus reality of sailing will be clear. The most difficult thing we've encountered has been emotionally processing things like breakdowns and finances and how they must be dealt with in strange environments.

More Justification than How To

If you are interested in circumnavigation on a sailboat this short read is a good place to start. The author lays out a simple plan and route that assumes circumnavigation to create a a complete line around the world is your goal. At times this book reads more like a justification for why the author feels part time cruising is the way to go. The How To parts aren't very in depth.
If your dream is to cruise in specific parts of the world for awhile, or really get to know lots of the places you will visit on your travels, this may not be the right book for you because the author often argues why circumnavigating part time is a superior to other cruising goals.
The book clearly lays out the results of the author's research into part time circumnavigation by sailboat, but he has yet to undertake his own round the world trip so the nitty gritty of getting it done isn't included in the book. This means if you are serious about your own circumnavigation, you will probably want to go back to the sources the author sites for more detailed information.

Good advice on wind, weather and repairs, this book is thoughtful and practical and every sailor will get something from it.

As good as any Prospect Guide out there

Prospect Guides are a dime a dozen these days. Jump online, and google "baseball prospects," and you can be quickly overwhelmed. Some, like Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, are state of the art, and others, just "Meh." That's why when a REALLY good one comes out, it can get lost in the shuffle. And Joseph Werner's annual "Prospect Digest Handbook" is not merely a really good one --- it's one of the very best, an absolute must read for any prospect junkie. Anything you want- complex analysis, rankings, statistics, an author who readily takes strong stands, and readily discusses past successes, and the occasional misses- it's all here. I am utterly astounded that Joe's name is not discussed with some of the heavyweights of prospect analysis. Jump in on the ground floor- this guide is as good as it gets. Highly, Highly recommended

An excellent book with extreme depth of both information, data, and insight

Joe goes just about as deep as anyone into the realm of prospects in his book. Most lists stop at 101 prospects, but Joe goes to 250 and includes the ~30 prospects of each organization too so in a way you're getting the top 900 prospects.These also aren't just a list of them, but detailed reports on each. For those who like sabermetrics you've got that on each player. For those who like more qualitative, you've got that too.

One feature I like is his breakout list. Last year he nailed three out of the five "breakout teams" and really came close to having four out of five. More interesting perhaps though is his breakout prospect list. He missed some in 2015, but he got more right, including spotting arguably the current best SS prospect in baseball (Orlando Arcia) before anyone else really did.

The Cal system is still in its infancy however it still is useful and gives insight for fantasy and real life purposes. I wouldn't be surprised if after a few years of data that it's the most accurate projection system.

540 pages, deep detailed analysis, prospect content galore, and a reasonable price, this is an east buy and a definite recommendation.

My Go to Guide

Joe's book has become my go to guide for prospects even surpassing Baseball America as my most used reference tool for prospects for my blog (Thoughts of RS) and for fantasy baseball.
Joe ranks among the most requested guests for the Thoughts Of RS podcast and he clearly knows his sport.
My only quibble with the book comes on the Kindle edition,which I buy for the ease of taking it to all the ballparks that I visit.
I wish each team had its own chapter in the table of contents for ease to moving around from team to team.
Other than that-this book is indispensable for minor league buffs.

Great Information

Bill Feudale's book is jam-packed with great information for anyone with a child in football. True to his "Life Coach" roots, he gives good advice for both coaches and parents on how to encourage the players. While there are a few grammatical errors in the book, the information is sound and detailed. I would admonish any parent with a child in sports to read this book. The principles expressed can be applied across any extra-curricular activities a son or daughter would desire.

His first great success was You Know Me Al, a fictional series of letters from a popular baseball hero to his friend, slyly revealing the letter writer as a crude, conceited, semiliterate, self-deceiving boob.
The letters, created while Lardner was writing a sports column for The Chicago Tribune, first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post and were later published in book form in 1918. You Know Me Al reveals Lardner as a satirical master at the peak of his form: a fine albeit misanthropic storyteller with a superb feel for the niceties of characters and speech and a sure instinct for provoking laughter.

In his day, Ring Lardner was a legendary humorist (a job-description he disavowed), and You Know Me Al shows why everyone loved him so. In the letters of Jack Keefe, a bush-league pitcher who finally gets his chance in the majors, Lardner shows not only a faultless ear, but also a keen eye for the amusing details of human folly. Keefe is no comical bumbler--he has talent--but also possesses astonishing naïvete, and a lack of self-awareness that is unerringly hilarious. The busher blames everyone but himself for his failures (a trait that Lardner uses to wonderful comic effect in the story "Alibi Ike"). Still, thanks to Keefe's mixture of hubris and puppy-dog trust, you want to see him come out all right.

Lardner--who played a role in breaking the infamous "Black Sox" scandal of 1919--wrote You Know Me Al while covering pro baseball in the teens; for baseball fans, the book is an intriguing glimpse into the past. One of the Greats

The travails of the boastful, blame-shifting, naive-unto-the-point-of-stupidity White Sox rookie first went into print 85 years ago. It's one of the miracles of 20th century fiction -- or a comment on the eternal childishness of America's national pastime -- that the bush leaguer's absurd confidences to a friend back home are still fresh and funny. "I have not worked yet Al and I asked Callahan to-day what was the matter and he says I was waiting for you to get in shape. I says I am in shape now and I notice that when I was pitching in practice this A.M. they did not hit nothing out of the infield. He says That was because you are so spread out that they could not get nothing past you. He says The way you are now you cover more ground than the grand stand. I says Is that so? And he walked away." Yeah, this is clearly the same sport where the portly John Kruk turned aside a question a few years ago about conditioning with the Bartlett's-worthy, "We're not athletes. We're ballplayers."
Lardner does more than get laughs at the expense of his dense protagonist, though. He gives an intimate picture of baseball in its first classic era -- the busher comes face to face with Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker and Walter Johnson with interesting results. But it's not a sentimental depiction of the age: Among those with whom the busher crosses paths is the famously parsimonious and autocratic White Sox owner, Charles Comiskey. The book gives a hint of the resentments that led his players to agree to throw a World Series (as they did a few years after Lardner wrote "You Know Me Al") and illustrates the indentured servitude that all but the best players endured before free agency arrived in the mid-'70s.

An inside look at turn-of-the-century professional baseball

Ring Lardner was a newspaper sports writer in the early 1900s. He rode the trains with professional baseball players and joined in thier card games. "You Know Me Al" is a unique set of letters from a fictional rookie ball player to his friend Al back home. The book contains real teams and stats, but is a fast-reading fictional look at the lives of players. With everything from front office negotiations with Comiski to on-the-field trash talk, "You Know Me Al" is a must-read for baseball fans who miss the game of yesteryear.

Baseball, Mom and Apple Pie

This book was a real hoot to read. Ive always loved the language that revolved around the game of baseball. Ring Lardner does a credible job of creating this youthful prospect trying to make big in The Show. The format of writing letters gives it a touch a realism. The language and grammar of this semiliterates lend it a charm that is slightly reminiscent of Huck Finn. His delusional arrogance is more humorous than offensive in the long run. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the literature and journalism that surrounds this great American game.

Very Helpful for Anyone Who Wants to Learn Chess

This set of four books on chess was just what I'd been looking for. I knew how to play chess, but didn't know any of the strategies. I had tried to learn strategies before, but I was baffled by all the strange terms and symbols. This series gives the basics without the specialized terms and symbols, and then introduces and defines the symbols and specialized words. I now know the basics and can play a game from beginning to end without doing anything stupid. :)

I do enjoy a good bundle! I feel like I'm getting more for my money. This book covers everything from the absolute basics to the basic strategies to chess openings and checkmates. I read through it once, but I will need to go back for further reading. I'm lending this book to my brother so we can play over the holiday weekend. Highly recommended!

No road to mastery

I dowloaded this ebook for sheer curiosity, it was free.

What's the target? Absolute beginners who would just like to play somewhat better, not aiming for competition. For them chess is a game, not a sport.

No way to improve reading other books, as there is no written move, notation is not taught. A visual book with plenty of diagrams.
Like playing the guitar with tablatures, you could enjoy that all your life, but it's not the road to mastery.

Concerning the content, the Scholar's mate is taught, disguised under a fancy denomination. While everybody should bear in mind that an early move of the Queen should be avoided, as with proper counterplay she would soon be lost.

As far as the Fried liver attack is concerned, soon the beginner will find himself just one piece down for an unsound sacrifice. If he did not study how to proceed. No opening, calm or aggressive, leads to an assured win.

However enjoy it, if you don't aim to play tournaments. If you do, better follow a traditional teaching. .

A Beautiful Way to Encounter Mercy in the World

DynamicCatholic.com does it again - provides a resource for those looking but maybe not 100% sure what they are looking for. Two categories of works that focus on showing and sharing mercy are called - the Spiritual and the Corporal Works of Mercy. Beautiful Mercy brings these works to life with short engaging stories from incredible authors such as - Lisa Hendey; Jennifer Fulwiler; Sr. Helena Burns, and more. Toted as the "perfect companion for the Year of Mercy" - I would definitely have to agree with this statement. As we travel through the special year announced by Pope Francis as the Jubilee Year of Mercy, it is good to have concrete ways to bring that Mercy we share in the love of God to others. Mercy received by not shared is wasted. Mercy offered but never experienced is even sadder - and makes sharing it with others impossible. Inspiration to really, practically LIVE MERCY in your daily life.

I picked up this book to refresh and encourage me on MERCY. I wanted to more deeply engage in the concept of the Pope's focus of Mercy during this Jubilee year. I found the stories often made me cry, and the question from the start of the opening of the book - "When is the last time someone mistook me for Jesus" - continues to reverberate in my ears almost daily. This is an AWESOME way to walk through the corporal and spiritual works for mercy - which is really just a way of saying how do we LIVE MERCY in our daily lives. It did what I hoped for - it encouraged and refreshed me - but did more than that...It inspired me to renew my commitment to LIVING MERCY in my daily life.

Great resource for new and old horror movie fans.

Full disclosure: I was a reader of Brian's Horror Movie a Day blog since it's first year. I've been bugging him about a book since before he posted his final "a Day" review for the site. (For the record, he still posts the occasional review of horror movies he sees.)

For any longtime horror fan, Brian's reviews are a valuable resource. Horror fans are all well aware of the "The Horror Canon" (Halloween, The Thing, The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist et al), and so many sites and articles have been written about why they're great, why they're important, why they’re great movies. (We know.) Then we get, usually around Halloween, lists of "obscure" horror films that we’re also already aware of (e.g. Candyman, or Event Horizon, or High Tension, or...) — and these are interesting if you’ve already seen The Omen & Rosemary Baby but wouldn’t consider yourself a ‘horror fan.' But we who are deep into the genre, in all its various permutations, we are curious about those movies we remember from the back shelves of mom ’n’ pop video stores w/ the lurid covers, from deep diving into the Netflix & Prime offerings. While BC may cover some of secondary group of films (not everyone’s a jaded horror junkie like some of us), he uses the blog, and now this book, to dive deep into the depths of the genre and give you 365 horror films that are absolutely worth tracking down and judging on your own.

Let’s face it, a lot of the weird movies you remember from the bottom shelves of video stores, or 4 pages deep in Amazon’s streaming lists, are often not worth the time it would take to watch them. After watching 2500 horror movies, Brian is good gauge as to what is worth your time, even if it’s not a lost masterpiece.

What really makes this book shine though are not just the selection of the films (though it is a fascinating collection) but the care that Brian has put into the writing. Read his introduction and you see, he didn’t just pull a bunch of reviews off the blog, write said intro, and call it a day. The bulk of the prose is entirely new. He truly looked back at his time watching one horror movie a day for 5 plus years, and figured out how to make his experience entertaining to newbies and old hacks alike. He’s a strong, thoughtful writer, a funny dude, who has a readable, relatable prose style and is insightful without being pretentious.

This is already one of my favorite books about movies. I will refer to it often.

Funny, Insightful, Informative

I was an avid reader of the Horror Movie A Day blog for years, and a lover of horror movies. Brian's thoughts - not on just the movies he's reviewed, but on horror and film itself - are insightful, well-reasoned, and funny. His revamped reviews for the book add an extra dimension to what was already an overall entertaining style. Out of necessity, his scope of horror movies is far beyond the norm, and he presents the oddballs and the overlooked films that we may never have heard of and just may wind up loving. His blog cluttered up my Netflix queue for years, and here he presents the best 366 movies of the thousands he watched and wrote about. Worth buying and there's some awesome artwork in the chapter breaks.

For genre nuts only!

I got into Brian Collins' horror musings via his comprehensive (hardly a big enough word) analysis of the Halloween franchise on Birth.Movies.Death. If you've read him before, you know the man knows horror on a broader scale than just about any critic or aficionado I've yet to come across. He doesn't just share his wide experience with horror film itself - he gets deep into the world SURROUNDING horror film. Production histories, box office numbers, aborted projects, behind the scenes feuds... the works.

So, one dives into this book with the proper expectation that it's NOT a "365 Horror Movies to See Before You Die!" kind of thing. We don't need yet another writer telling us how great Texas Chainsaw Massacre is. But horror nuts who find themselves beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel can use this as a reference map to going a level (or a few) deeper.

But it's not ONLY obscure, impenetrable curiosities within. As you flip through, you're bound to see several titles you recognize, which is nice. The write ups on each film are chock full of comparisons and references to OTHER films, some covered in the book, some not. Taking all that into account, Horror Movie a Day is like a lifetime's worth of homework (in a good way) for any serious horror fan. Buy it. Enjoy.
