I hope the author writes more of this book

This is only the beginning of what the author suggests will be an entire full length book. I hope she hurries with the rest of it because I am looking forward to more adventures. She writes with a descriptive, intense style that captures the emotions of the moment and the essence of wilderness travel. I have read the author's other works and enjoyed them also. This story details the beginning of the group called the Mountain Sisters: even though the author can't wait for more mountain time, she must still deal with everyday family life and the worries of her husband for her safety.

Unhappy families

While reading this, I was continually reminded of Tolstoy's well-known sentence "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The families in the book enjoyed fabulous wealth and their members often had rewarding and creative careers, but oh, brother... what unhappiness! Murder, suicide, mental illness, financial disasters, etc., etc. You name it. The only exception was Jean Stein's own family, and perhaps that's just because she didn't talk about it (and even for them there was a kidnapping threat). As a third-generation native of Los Angeles (since escaped), I'm perpetually amazed by the goings-on there. My father was a reporter in Los Angeles in the thirties, and he used to regale us with stories of the rich and famous and their quirks. Stein's book gives us a fascinating picture, with all the important gossip, in a rather unusual format: quotations (often less than a page) from people who actually were there are cleverly strung together in a way that draws the reader inexorably along. Read it, then read some Raymond Chandler, and then go see L.A. Confidential.

West of Eden: An American Place

The new oral history by Jean Stein has been a long time in the making. In fact, many of the subjects Stein interviewed are now dead. That only adds to the air of melancholy in this dark chronicle of five Hollywood families whose glamour was exceeded only by their tragedy. From the Dohenies, who were behind the oil boom that made Southern California, to the film mogul Warners, to families less well-known but equally fascinating, Stein reveals a world of opulence and emotional cruelty, with a particular focus on how the children of the powerful struggled with parenting that could be as ruthless as any business practice. Stein structures her interview quotes to great effect, highlighting thematic overlap in a way that makes the book seem more than a collection of the five most dramatic stories she could find. The final chapter, dealing with her own family history, might seem self-indulgent, but in fact her father's history as an entertainment mogul dovetails neatly with the rest of the tapestry she's created.

West of Eden is not without minor structural flaws. The chapter on the Dohenies uses quotes from a historian to provide a clearer context for the personal recollections, and the absence of such grounding is noticeable in some of the later chapters, particularly that on the Warners. The Warner chapter muddles itself further by expanding from treatment of Jack Warner's behavior during the blacklist to a discussion of that period more generally, which includes some worthwhile material but doesn't increase our understanding of that period enough to warrant the excursion. Occasionally one suspects that Stein has included a quote from a famous person more for the sake of having her in the contributor list than because she has much of substance to say. There are brief contributor biographies at the end of the book, but family trees in each section would have helped enormously to clarify who is who. But overall this is an extraordinary work, conversational yet haunting, earthy without being trite or lurid. The oral history format, in which different voices give contradictory accounts and the author-as-God can offer no final clarification, is used to explore the line between legend and reality and the impossibility of ever really knowing how another person's mind works. Perhaps the digressions are part of the point: life lacks the clean lines and definitive answers of fiction. The only certainties are decay and death, and West of Eden is about the persistence of that fact even in the lives of the very powerful.

No Temptation To Visit This Eden

It is only February but this book already earns my award as the most boring, pretentious, irritating and uninteresting book of the year and I hasten to add that I am a great movie lover.

The structure, if I may dignify the book with this term, is confusing beyond belief. Every single page necessitates referring to the end of the book to ascertain who the person quoted is and what he or she did. Having done this umpteen times you will find that you have never heard of the vast majority of these people and never want to hear about them again. A random example: "Gayle Chelgren is the niece of Hugh Plunkett". Don't bother to look up Hugh Plunkett even if you wanted to; there is no indication as to who he is or was. But the prime So What? example is "Anson Lisk's aunt, Lucy Marceline Smith Doheny, was the first wife of Edward L. Doheny, Jr.".

The dust jacket claims that the book creates "an astonishing tapestry of voices..." Substitute "cacophony" for "tapestry" and I would agree.

Superb followup to his last volume in the Clifton Chronicles! AAA+++

Jeffrey Archer completes volume six of the Clifton Chronicles. I've been a big fan of Archer's books, especially this series "The Clifton Chronicles." Having read the other five, I was anxiously awaiting volume six. I was lucky enough to receive an an advance reader's copy of this sixth volume. I wasn't disappointed, since it just keeps getting better.

This picked up, where volume five of the Clifton Chronicles left off, with its own cliffhanger. Archer daftly gave us enough of the previous background, to remind you of the details of the last volume. This volume accurately proceeds to follow the Cliftons and the Barringtons, throughout the 1970's, and brings us to yet another cliffhanger.

This shows, as in the previous volumes, how everyone has to face their own difficulties. The story opens with a suicide note, Giles is not sure if he wants to bow out of the political scene? What should he do about Karin? Lady Virginia is wrecked with her financial problems. Sebastian's whole life is tipsy and on edge. Harry is trying to free Anatoly. There are so many more twists and uprisings, it is hard to put this exceptional novel down.

Cometh the Hour, shows how Jeffrey Archer just keeps getting better with each volume. It was a pleasure to read and I found this novel was exceptional. Hope it Helps:)

Very easy reading and hard to put down

Very easy reading and hard to put down. It is nice to see a book where you don't have to wait until the last page for the good guys to prevail. My only complaint about this book is that it did not preface the story with a short summary of what went before like the prior two books did. It took me about 50 pages for me to recall the relationships etc. since the prior book in the series was read a year ago.

A Masterpiece

Jeffrey Archer has always intrigued me with his style, but I have to admit he keeps me anticipating something all the way to the end of his stories, and I am never disappointed because he finally comes with the twist in the plot that reveals an unexpected angle. He did just that with Cometh Hour. His family sagas and historical novels have always been gripping. And with a mix of distress, money, ambitions, history etc, he did it again, bringing the series to a wonderful conclusion. I see elements of Disciples of Fortune,The Godfather, and Sins of the father, in Cometh Hour. Only if there were a way to continue the series.

This is just right!!

As a colored pencil artist, I have been looking for just the right “coloring book” to use as a relaxation tool. I have looked at several that utilize linear designs and patterns, but they just didn’t speak to me. After receiving a copy of “Coloring Books for Adults – Relaxation” in return for my honest review,​ I am happy to report that I have found what I was looking for. This book is full of free flowing, moving designs that inspire but leave room for me to practice shading and test new skills. The designs are friendly, relaxing and a bit whimsical! I’ve attached a few examples from the book!

I was given a free copy of this book so that I could use it and then give my honest review. I find coloring to be relaxing. I am always looking for new material. I love the variety that is in this book! There are different drawings, not just all flowers, but masks, and animals, and fantasy creatures. I am enjoying this book a lot!

Edited: I added a finished picture and one from the book. The book is printed with one drawing per page. That way when you are coloring, you won't get the bleed through. You can also use the blank pages to journal!

I absolutely love this book! I have many adult coloring books and usually I love a few pages, like a few others and the rest, eh, they will probably never be colored. With this book I am going to have an extremely hard time picking which page to color first. The book contains a large variety of images to suit whatever mood you might be in. There are beautiful floral patterns, geometric shapes, feather patterns ( I LOVE FEATHERS!!), animals, mandala style and much more. Some pages are simple in design and easy to color, other pages are much more intricate with lots of detail

How did American intelligence respond to terrorism, a major war and the most sweeping technological revolution in the last 500 years?  What was NSA before 9/11 and how did it change in its aftermath?  Why did NSA begin the controversial terrorist surveillance program that included the acquisition of domestic phone records? What else was set in motion during this period that formed the backdrop for the infamous Snowden revelations in 2013?  
 
As Director of CIA in the last three years of the Bush administration,  Hayden had to deal with the rendition, detention and interrogation program as bequeathed to him by his predecessors. He also had to ramp up the agency to support its role in the targeted killing program that began to dramatically increase in July 2008. This was a time of great crisis at CIA, and some agency veterans have credited Hayden with actually saving the agency. He himself won't go that far, but he freely acknowledges that CIA helped turn the American security establishment into the most effective killing machine in the history of armed conflict.
 
For 10 years, then, General Michael Hayden was a participant in some of the most telling events in the annals of American national security. General Hayden's goals are in writing this book are simple and unwavering: No apologies. No excuses. Just what happened. And why. As he writes, "There is a story here that deserves to be told, without varnish and without spin. My view is my view, and others will certainly have different perspectives, but this view deserves to be told to create as complete a history as possible of these turbulent times. I bear no grudges, or at least not many, but I do want this to be a straightforward and readable history for that slice of the American population who depend on and appreciate intelligence, but who do not have the time to master its many obscure characteristics."

About the Author
Michael Hayden is a retired United States Air Force four-star general and former Director of the National Security Agency, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He is currently a principal at the Chertoff Group, a security consultancy founded by former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Hayden also serves as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at George Mason University School of Public Policy.

Deep inside the beltway stuff.

If anyone is interested in buying or reading this book, I would recommend reading ALL of the reviews on Amazon.com. And I mean from the "1" star ratings to the "5" star ratings, because they are all correct. Was I riveted and enthralled at times? Yes. Did I fall asleep at times? You bet. Having been in the military, I understand and "get" the use of acronyms, but come on.

If the target audience are inside-the-beltway, high level bureaucrats, then okay. But, if he intended to market the book to mere civilians, then he falls short. If you know who's who in D.C., if you know the intricacies of DOD, FBI, State, the various Intelligence agencies, and if you know the nuances of the leaders of those departments and agencies and their relationships therefrom, then maybe this book is for you.

I follow Washington DC politics and have done so for many years, but gosh, this book made me realize how little I know about these power brokers. And I didn't care for the self-aggrandizing perspective without much counter balancing. I'm quite sure the men and women of the intelligence agencies do a spectacular job on-the-whole, but the view from the top of a large organization is quite different from those who actually do the work.

Bottomline of my review: 3 stars is generous, so in hindsight I say pass on this one.

Definitely a book that needs to be read

I find the book difficult to put down.. He covers so much territory and shares events and opinions about what has happened to respond to the challenges the USA has faced in the past from the perspective of someone who actually reviews, evaluates, decides and reacts...... Not someone who is limited by the partial truths released by the different media sources. Of course, what is in the book has been reviewed, edited, and released so if you are looking for secrets they aren't here. However, he openly reflects on decisions that were made and reflects how they might of been different knowing what happened years after they were made. He also reflects on the political, legal, defense, technical and budget restrictions he dealt with not to mention the risk of fracturing the US citizens need for privacy. The book is well named..

Playing to the proverbial edge of our legal limits of intelligence!!! Great insight of Michael Hayden's view.

This book gives us a look at the illustrious career of Michael Hayden. Hayden is a retired United States Air Force four star general, former Director of the National Security Agency, former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

When Hayden was the Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), he oversaw the controversial NSA surveillance of technological communications between persons in the United States and alleged foreign terrorists. This resulted in the controversy over NSA surveillance without warrants.

He was also the first Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence and at that point, he was awarded his fourth star. This made him the highest ranking military intelligence officer in the armed forces. Later on in his career, Hayden became the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Shortly after becoming Director of the CIA, Hayden retired from his 41 year Air Force career and continued to serve as Director of the CIA.

This is his assessment of the controversial programs which he administered during those times. "Playing to the Edge" is his reference about programs, that under his responsibility and stead pushed the envelope of the limit of the law. Now many years afterward he takes us onward, with more perspective to see how pulling back from that proverbial edge, has not increased acts of terror. Meanwhile, we are living and feeling the repercussion of the lasting damage in which some of those programs have caused, indeed by their years of excess.

Mr. Hayden presents matters that are often very complex, but dwell on them to create any insight to what may have been done or what could come out of it. Throughout most of the Bush era, Mr. Hayden has tried to show us his belief in the rule of law, pushing constitutionally boundaries was what was required of his stead. He talks about various aspects of privacy laws, congressional briefings and doing what was necessary to protect our nation, in the aftermath of 9/11.

Throughout his recollection of various duties, he is still pushing steadfast for N.S.A. data collection rooted in the vast collection efforts, primarily towards foreign terrorist targets. He also touches on the timeframe of Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning with their revelations on the surveillance methodology being used today.

The book is extremely well written. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book a couple weeks ago and couldn't put it down as was the case with his other books. I highly recommend this insight into our intelligence, highlighting the insights of Michael Hayden. I personally enjoy many books and genres, but when it comes down to insights about the inner workings of the government and our intelligence community, I actually enjoy it more. Most books that I review I really enjoy, if I have to read a book and either put it down in the middle or say it was ok, I generally will not take the time to do a review for. I only review books that keep my attention and keep me burning through the pages. This in my definition is a five star "I Love it" type of book, as well.

The ultimate book about surfing.

My name is Peter Soria & I received my copy of "Surfing" today. It will take many hours to completely experience it from cover to cover but just from leafing through it I can tell that this could be the ultimate book about the history of surfing. I am pleased that a photo that I took of surfers at Pacific Ocean Park can be found on page 302 & the Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center in San Clemente will financially benefit from its inclusion in the book. Someday I will write a more thorough review from the point of view of someone who was an avid surfer from 1962-2010.

I've been a fan of Jim Heimann since "Out With The Stars" and his latest tome not disappoint. "Surfing" is a lovingly compiled and presented epic of a book. Chock full of images that I have never seen before.

You'll own this for a lifetime - a true surfing masterpiece!

WOW, this book is so large that it has its own cardboard case with carry handle! I knew that this was something rather special. It’s a true surfers masterpiece. Beautifully written with 600 pages of amaziness. The quality of the photographs are truly incredible along with the super high quality heavy paper, card almost. Over A3 in size, this is a book that will make you awe in its splendidness. It’s almost spiritual. I loved looking at the photos of surfing from 1890 and the early 1900s. It’s beautiful written too. Even the typography is stylish, clean and well thought out. This book has not been rushed. It’s been lovingly and perfectly thought out. No corners have been cut.

The first time I looked at it, I had Nathan Oldfield’s surf film ‘The Heart and the Sea’ on in the background and it really did add to the atmosphere. The soundtrack along with the films ambience really added to the feeling of ‘getting lost in a book’. The following evening I did the same, this time with ‘The Endless Summer’ on. So many favourite photos from George Sonoda on pages two and three to LeRoy’s Grannis 1969 Dukes to a A3 size photo of the Endless Summer artwork. I really don’t believe that anything has been missed out from this book!

They say that there will never be a surfing book quite like this one and I can see why. It’s a book to keep for a lifetime and then hopefully, pass down to the next generation. It’s a book to treasure and every surfer or surfing fan NEEDS to own this! Words can’t do justice to this surfing masterpiece! Just own it!

Don't waste your money

This "book" was literally the biggest waste of money and time. I'm happy this wasn't more than a couple bucks, but I'm quite certain everyone who gave such stellar reviews are paid individuals.

This book was no help or insight into taking the PMP exam or even what's been updated.

He wrote things like: "make sure you find a study technique that works for you, try highlighting or organizing by groups," "make sure you don't get discouraged". Really? Any person who is taking the PMP should have some of this "common sense" already, if not, you should not be a in the PM profession.

Not Much PMP Study Information. Set Wrong Expectations.

This book is a very short read and does not contain much information. I do not know why I bought this book. And it gives some what a false expectation from the title. The book does not actually contain any study material, only information on what to expect from the exam, scheduling, application, etc. Lucky I have Rita's book as a foundational guide.

In the book there is a link to sign up for Shiv notes. This seems to be good information. Only issue is it's given to you in a convoluted format, where you are sent daily emails. Why not put this information into one book and combine with some of the details on scheduling, application, as an intro, to the actual material you need to learn to pass the exam??? Any ways I just think the writer could have took a better clearer approach to PMP.

BEST source of answers to all your questions about PMP exam.

'' Yippee! I cleared PMP today'' is something all the PMP aspirants want to shout out loud to the entire world,the day they are able to do so. Not that the exam is tough but one needs more dedication and ability to learn from experiences of others who succeeded. In today's busy life, where everyone is tied up dealing with their own issues the author of this book SHIV took time to collate experiences of so many successful people at one place. The way the content is organized and the way it is explained is nothing less than AWESOME. I would say this is a must for every PMP aspirant. Reading this book is like you talking to the experts directly and getting your runway set up for a smooth take-off on your PMP journey. Kudos to the author SHIV SHENOY.
