Returning to Scotland, the famous West Coast shipwrecks such as the Thesis, Hispania, Rondo and Shuna in the Sound of Mull grace the pages, in addition to the renowned wrecks of the SS Breda, lost near Oban, and the WWII minelayer HMS Port Napier off Skye. Lastly, Rod covers some major North Sea shipwrecks, revealing for the first time the haunting remains of HMS Pathfinder, the first Royal Navy warship to be sunk by U-boat torpedo during WWI. This is a beautifully illustrated and definitive guide to the greatest shipwrecks around the UK and will be an enlightening and unmissable book for many.

Note the full title.

I came to the subject of reviewing `shipwreck' books some years ago because so much inferior material was being published in the knowledge that, generally speaking, most divers knew little or nothing about the wrecks they visit and, therefore, accepted whatever was written for their benefit. Such criticisms, however, have never applied to this author, diver and shipwreck enthusiast because he simply knows his stuff, knows how to conduct thorough research and, equally as important, knows how to write it all down in an interesting and readable manner. In short, not only is this author yet to disappoint me, he continues to confound me with the depth of information he always seems to uncover.
Before going any further, however, we must take a closer look at the full title so as not to miss the last bit which reads `A Personal Adventure.' I mention this for two reasons: Firstly, Mr Macdonald has included those wrecks he knows well because he has both visited the vessels in question and studied their details down to the last nut and bolt of information. There are 37 wrecks included here and my second point is that some of these are not open to everyday diving because of their status. This is why he has used the words `Personal Adventure.' Having said all that and, whilst the author makes no claims to these being the `best' or `top' 37 British wrecks, few could possibly disagree that they are all worthy of inclusion under the heading of `Great!'
Part 1 covers Orkney and Scapa Flow where we find a new, wholly original and well-researched account of the events which led up to the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in 1919. If, like me, you thought you knew this story, you may well have to think again. I was wholly unaware, for example, of the loss of life involved - not a proud day for the Royal Navy at all!!! In addition to the seven well known German ships another four - including HMS Hampshire and the 15 in. gun turret of the Bayern, are also included. Part 2 covers the English Channel from East Sussex to Plymouth where we find another 9 well-known vessels which include three liners, a submarine and a battleship. Part 3 is the North Channel, Irish Sea with a further three wrecks, Part 4, the West Coast of Scotland with yet another eight and finally the journey concludes with Part 5 being North Sea and a final offering of 5 more outstanding vessels.
If I were to commend the work it would be for two outstanding features; Firstly, as already mentioned, the history and attention to detail regarding the background information of each ship is exceptional. The second is easily the inclusion of some admirable artwork of a calibre rarely seen. These are not the computer-generated images which seem to satisfy so many authors and publishers today but are produced by a most competent artist from well-researched material.
Having said all that, I do have one overriding disappointment. A number of the wrecks are former RN warships now designated as `Protected Places under the Protection of Military Maritimes Graves Act 1986' (i.e. War Graves and, therefore, out-of bounds). Permission is rarely given to dive these sites and more information on that point should have been included. Whereas we do have a warning about HMS Hampshire (but only as far as we are informed the site is so designated), HMS M2 and others have no such information at all...
Notwithstanding that very important point, I commend the author on a job well done on a work which more than deserves full marks

The Forgotten Wrecks.

The sunken ships presented in this book, are not all forgotten by history, but some are more famous than others. The ships that were scuttled at Scarpa Flow, were thwe relics of the first World War. Those vessels lying on the ocean floor, symbolize a part of Germanys defeat in the first war. The mechant vessels never get much attention by history, but they were nonetheless important for wqhat they carried in their holds. The passenger vessels were the symbols of a bygone eras, when the world perhaps saw things in a different way. The wrecks are pictures into human history, they tell the stories of human axction at different historical periods. This book is worth buying just for the history it presents to the reader. JRV

Compelling Chronicle of UK Shipwrecks!

Rod Macdonald's GREAT BRITISH SHIPWRECKS, A PERSONAL ADVENTURE is a visually stunning, absolutely fascinating guide to 30-odd shipwrecks around the UK. Part maritime history, part diving adventure, Macdonald's book povides an up-close-and-personal record of some very famous ships and their ultimate fate.
Dividing his topic geographically, Macdonald takes the reader on a diving jouney embracing 'Orkney & Scapa Flow,' 'The English Channel,' 'The North Channel - Irish Sea,' 'West Coast of Scotland' and 'North Sea.' Within each section he traces the career and current condition of such ships as SMS Markgraf, SMS Dresden, HMS Hampshire, RMS Alaunia, SS Maine, the White Star liner Justicia, SS Breda, SS Wallachia, the tanker San Tiburcio and SS Fram.
While the backstory of each ship is interesting, the most compelling part of the book is the descriptions and illustrations of the ships in situ. The book is illustrated with b&w and color photographs, maps and color artwork by Rob Ward. Ward's artwork, in particular, is fabulous.
A 2012 Whittle Publishing release, GREAT BRITISH SHIPWRECKS is a 'must have' for shipwreck and diving enthusiasts. It's a wonderful combination of nautical history and stunning color photography/artwork...and a great read. Highly recommended.
