The tragedy of the loss in 1941 of two Royal Navy capital ships, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, the core of Churchill’s deterrent Force Z, stunned the world. Churchill had hoped that sending a small powerful squadron of ships to Singapore would deter a threatened Japanese invasion of Malaya and Thailand. He was to be proved tragically wrong. Denuded of aircraft cover, Force Z was left disastrously exposed to air attack. Within eight days of their arrival at Singapore both ships were sunk with huge loss of life in a mass attack by 85 Japanese bombers. It was the Royal Navy’s greatest loss in a single engagement and the first time a modern battleship had been sunk by air power. With the naval force at the bottom of the sea, and the RAF almost wiped out in Malaya on day one, Singapore was left with no air or sea protection and fell two months later. This is the first book to explore in detail the wrecks of these two vessels and grippingly narrates a summary of the Japanese threat, Fortress Singapore and the subsequent Japanese invasion. Today the wrecks of these two famous British warships lie on the bottom of the South China Sea, 200 miles north of Singapore and 50 miles offshore. The author was invited as a civilian expert on a military expedition to dive and survey these wrecks and now, for the first time, the wrecks are revealed as they are today. Beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned artist’s illustrations of the wrecks, each one is looked at in detail. The story of the loss of these two ships, and of the sacrifice of the men who served in them, is remembered. This has been a personal quest for the author whose grandfather was serving in Singapore when Force Z arrived. His wife and the author’s father and two brothers were among the last civilians evacuated from Singapore before the final siege. His grandfather was taken into internment at Changi Gaol by the Japanese and suffered there for three years until Singapore was re-occupied by the British in 1945. Had the Fall of Singapore not happened the way it did the author would not be here to write this truly remarkable book.

Work Boat World 'Macdonald's descriptions of the sinking of the Prince of Wales and Repulse are well written... The photographs are highly emotive: The human drama is brought sharply into focus, and the illustrations of the wrecks are interesting, insightful, and haunting. ...the book does provide a new angle on the fate of Force Z, and Macdonald's enthusiasm for his subject is evident'. All you ever wanted to know about these two ships and their fate!
By Ned Middleton
I happen to be working on a project covering the sinking of HMS' Prince of Wales and Repulse and am, therefore, familiar with both ships. Goebbels, for example, claimed Repulse had been sunk by U47 in October 1939 and, in May 1941, when the Prince of Wales took part in the action which sank the Bismarck, she was `so' brand new several civilian shipbuilders remained on board when she sailed! Of, perhaps, more relevance to the actual loss of these two ships is a US Army-Navy pamphlet dated 29 November 1941 which carried a photograph of the USS Arizona at sea next to which were the words; "It is significant that despite the claims of air enthusiasts no battleship has yet been sunk by bombs." Eight Days later the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and the Arizona exploded after receiving a direct hit. Today that ship remains a permanent war grave for the 1,102 men who perished on that day.
Nevertheless, there still existed a number of die-hard naval traditionalists who truly believed in the mighty battleship over air-power and dismissed the events in Hawaii as being irrelevant to the central argument - if only because the US ships were attacked in harbour and not whilst at action-stations at sea. Three days later, however, all doubts were finally extinguished when the two mighty battle-wagons HMS' Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk in the South China Sea. Only now was the battleship era suddenly ended and the time of the aircraft carrier had come. Personally, I will always wonder whether Admiral Sir Tom Phillips (who did not survive) went into that action firmly believing in the invincibility of the battleship - or not.
In yet another outstanding work by established author and diver Rod Macdonald, we are provided with the most complete history of the ships, men, political intrigue and events which led to the loss of these two famous ships so overwhelmingly. The surrender of Singapore and an account of Lt. General Percival's actions are also included. To this day Percival remains the only British officer to have reached 3 star rank - and not been knighted!
The content is curiously described as three books - resulting in three chapter ones! Nevertheless, this does not detract from the substance. Book One is all about the ships and explains the origins of the battleship, armour, armament, gunnery, shells, torpedoes, propulsion, developments and tactics. These are followed by chapters devoted to the specifics of the Prince of Wales and Repulse respectively. Book Two has nine chapters which really set the scene for the final act; Singapore - with a complete potted history (including relevant world events) from 1818 to 1941, the Japanese threat, the SS Automedon incident, Force Z conceived, Japanese aggression, Force Z deployed, Force Z first sortie, a blow by blow account of 10 December and finally (Chapter 9) the fall of Singapore. Book Three should be studied by anyone and everyone who is considering a visit to the two wrecks in question. Chapter One deals with HMS Prince of Wales in the order; wreck in detail, bow section, amidships and stern. Chapter two covers HMS Repulse in the same manner.
A number of supporting B&W historic images appear throughout the work with a colour section - mostly of underwater scenes, found right at the end. Once again, this author provides some very useful and detailed artwork showing how the two wrecks now lie on the seabed.
By way of underlining the excellence of this work - which I truly regard as a tour de force and from which I have learned much, I will include my two criticisms - the size and scope of which speak for themselves. Firstly; the word is `amidships' and not `midships' (see what I mean!!!). Secondly, the book would benefit from the inclusion of an Index. Notwithstanding such trivia, I do believe this book contains all you ever wanted to know about these two ships and their fate!

Bravely facing the odds
By John C. Waller
Rod Macdonald has given us a very complete picture of the tragedy of Force Z. The last stand of the British battleship. We might take some small comfort from observing that the Japanese super-battleships (Yamato and Musashi) were both sunk by aircraft alone. And yet, some sailors' eyes can still turn misty at the thought of the battleship.
As a member of the RAN, the operation of the high-angle anti-aircraft gun was explained to me. I knew it could never work for the average person sitting in the "driving" seat. Rod explains well how such a weapon can become very ineffective.
I commend Rod's book to all those interested in naval warfare. Two Ships

Engrossing History of Two Sunken RN Warships!
By Mike O'Connor
The sinking of HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales on 10 December 1941 by Japanese bombers was a catastrophe for Great Britain and a lesson to one and all that battleships no longer ruled the waves. Noted Brit diver/author Rod Macdonald examines the life and combat careers of those legendary ships and their current condition on the bottom of the South China Sea in FORCE Z SHIPWRECKS OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA.
Sent to bolster Britain's defenses in Southeast Asia, Prince of Wales and Repulse - part of Force Z - were sunk eight days after arriving in Singapore on an ill-fated sortie to locate and destroy Japanese invasion convoys. Lacking air cover, the two ships were swarmed over by 85 level- and torpedo-bombers and sank within two hours with a huge loss of life. With their loss, it was only a matter of time before the Japanese took Singapore.
Macdonald does an excellent job of relating the overall development of British battleships and battlecruisers, the service careers of both ships, the 10 December air attack and the present condition of the ships. He is a skilled writer, the description of the 10 December battle being especially compelling. Equally compelling is Macdonald's description of the sunken warships and the accompanying color photographs and artwork by Rob Ward. Visually the book is just fabulous.
Although it lacks an index, FORCE Z SHIPWRECKS OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA rates five stars. Its appealing combination of history and wreck diving complimented by top-notch photographs/artwork make for a great read. Highly recommended.
