Leading with Heart: Faith-Filled Thoughts on Leadership, by Ken Hensley

John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, once defined leadership in these terms: "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." That's a great definition. You've probably heard that leadership is influence (thanks to John Maxwell). That's true. If you're not influencing someone, you're not leading them. Take Maxwell's definition and through it in the blender with President Adam's definition -- and you have a really good definition of leadership. Ask yourself the following questions ... Do the people I lead dream bigger dreams than before? Do the people I lead show a desire to learn more than before? Do the people I lead do more on their own initiative, without my prompting? Do the people I lead become better leaders? Here's why many leaders will struggle with these questions: for them, leadership isn't about those they lead -- it's about themselves. Production-oriented leaders may still have influence (and by definition still be a leader), but they may be failing to harness the power of inspiration. The power of inspiration enables a team to go further than a production-mindset allows. Teams that are dreaming more, learning more, doing more, and becoming more will accomplish more. Adams' definition of leadership applies across many landscapes. Parenting, coaching, pastoring, managing, mentoring. For over twenty-five years I have been privileged to serve in positions of leadership. It is a privilege. Whenever someone willingly follows your leader, you have accepted a sacred responsibility - to lead well. This ebook is a collection of posts that originally appeared on my blog (kenhensley.com). Though my main profession has been in professional ministry, they are written for leaders of all types. As such, they approach leadership from a Christian perspective. Regardless of your religious persuasion, I believe you will find them helpful.

Compilation of Blog Posts
By Iola
Leading with Heart is compiled from a series of blog posts, generally beginning with a brief quote either from the Bible or from a well-known person, followed by a brief (or not-so-brief) discussion inspired by the quote. This gives the impression of it being more like a daily devotional than a serious book on leadership. Chapters are snippets of information rather than an in-depth discussion of a subject, and there is no overarching theme or argument as I usually expect in non-fiction.

I have read other books that are a compilation of blog posts and they also had this choppy feel, one chapter (day) being brief and the next more in-depth, one day being very conversational, the next being more a mini-sermon, and with no real links between topics. Some of the posts were related to what was in the news that day, so are very time-sensitive. A date would have helped place the events in context (particularly for us non-Americans).

It's an eclectic style that is very easy to read, but can take a bit of getting used to. There is also an issue with proportion--in books, authors tend to spend a lot of time on things that are important and gloss over things that they perceive as less important. On the other hand, brief blog posts may be something important that the writer wants us to ponder for the day. But in a book, we tend to read on without introspection, which is a mistake with a book like this.

Hensley is a good writer, with a welcoming and conversational style, and provides many nuggets on Christian leadership, both within the church and in daily life (and this is something that is often missing--a recognition that most of us don't work in the church). Worth reading, but not in one sitting.

Thanks to Ken Hensley for providing a free ebook for review.
