A fantastic read

If you’re looking for some kind of tabloid-y celebrity bio walk on past this critical albeit celebratory-when-called-for look at actor/writer/producer/director George Clooney. Insightful, skillfully written, highly informed, and with a keen eye towards both the highs of Clooney’s career (the climactic scene in “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” which author Smith adroitly compares to a similar scene in Dreyer’s “Passion of Joan of Arc”) to the lows (Clooney’s 2006 Oscar speech is rightly savaged, a moment that feels even more tone deaf in the year of #OscarsSoWhite), the book takes a deep dive into what drives Clooney’s choices of material, collaborators (with particular attention paid to the parallel evolution of Clooney with his Section Eight partner Steven Soderbergh, though the very self-effacing note he sends Cuaron along with some "Gravity" rewrites can't help but make you take his side over David O. Russell in a referenced "Three Kings" spat), and even humanitarian interests. The result is anything but hagiography, instead a dissection of someone with a full understanding of what his audience wants from him on screen and in the public sphere but who goes out on limbs regardless working to subvert this even if it means failing grandly in the attempt (looking at you “Leatherheads,” "Monuments Men," etc.). A less academic approach would have the reader racing to Netflix or Amazon Instant wanting to revisit Clooney’s entire oeuvre over popcorn and pizza. What Smith does instead is give readers a much richer understanding of where Clooney’s instincts and ambitions as an artist have taken him before and a real desire to see where they'll take him next. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent, thoughtful look at the actor and his career. Tons of photos. Highly rec for anyone interested in Clooney but moreso thoughtful film critique in general. Good stuff!!
