A lover of the outdoors and a born woodsman, E. N. Woodcock, a trapper and hunter during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, shares his life story in fascinating detail. Born in 1844 in the village of Lymansville, Pennsylvania, he inherited an insatiable desire for the trap, gun, and wild from his Revolutionary War-era grandfather, Maj. Isaac Lyman. In his more than fifty years working the trap line, Woodcock never hunted illegally or out of season.
Beginning with his experiences as a young boy learning the trade of trapping and hunting, the author chronicles his escapades throughout an untamed America, including trapping bear and deer in northern Michigan, wolfing in southeastern Oregon, hunting in California and Washington, and killing his first cougar in the mountains of Idaho. He examines the merits of traps versus guns amid his exciting accounts of narrow escapes and exhilarating hunting trips. Well known in his native Pennsylvania for his abilities, he was also a faithful contributor to Hunter-Trader-Trapper magazine. In a familiar and forthcoming tone, Woodcock details the hardships of his life, yet his voice never wavers in his undying fondness for the outdoors and the adventure that it offers.
About the Author
Woodcock worked the "trap line" for more than a half-century, and was a faithful contributor to Hunter, Trader, and Trapper magazine for a decade. In his later years Woodcock became an advocate for more stringent hunting and trapping laws, and believed conservation was the answer to the declining population of all game animals. In his more than fifty years, Woodcock never hunted illegally or out of season.

EXCELLENT book from a bygone era

Born in the 1800's, Mr. Woodcock relates his experiences from 50 years in the "tall timber". Ahead of his time, he expounds on the wisdom of closed seasons and game management. If you enjoy hunting; if you daydream of life in the mountains; this is a MUST read! In his folksy 'down home' way, he tells story after story of the rugged life in the mountains of Pennsylvania, as well as hunts in the west and south. If your son (or daughter) is new to hunting, GET THEM THIS BOOK! READ IT YOURSELF! Oh, to have been born in that long ago, forgotten era! Being from Pennsylvania myself, this has long been one of my favorite outdoor books, as I am sure it will be for you.

A Historical perspective - of sorts

This book is a collection of articles written by the author that was originally published in HTT - Hunter Trapper Trader. As such, much of the book is disconnected and repeats itself. However, it's interesting to see what this nation and wildlife was like around the turn of the 20th century. A return to a simpler time, it left me envious.
