A ride worth taking!

Set the Pace is the book one in The Detroit Love Duet by Kim Karr. Set the Pace is a ride you should get on. It is fast-paced, passionate, and suspenseful.
Charlotte Lane and Jasper Storm were the best of friends who lived next door to one another. They could always count on one another when things at home were not always the best. Jasper's dad worked at Charlotte's dad's automotive plant. When an explosion at the plant happens, Charlotte and Jasper's worlds were torn apart. Jasper loses his dad in the explosion and his best friend just disappears.
Twenty years later, Jasper has turned his life around. He and his buddies are on the cusp of starting a new automotive business that could help rebuild Detroit. The citizens of Detroit are looking to Jasper to be their Knight in Shining Armour. The 20-year anniversary of the explosion is bringing back old ghosts, including that of Jasper's long lost best friend, "Charlie."
Charlotte has returned to Detroit as a blogger for The Detroit Scene. Unbeknownst to Charlotte, her co-worker, Eve is doing an expose on Detroit's Knight, Jasper Storm. Eve will stop at nothing to get to Jasper, including seducing him. An after party has the boys partying hard, which leads to an encounter between Jasper and two women. Jasper passes out and lets the two women continue their night.
The next day is the groundbreaking at the sight where Jasper's dad passed away. He decides to go for a drive to clear his head before all the hoopla. In driving to his old neighborhood, he sees a car broke down on the side of the road with a beautiful woman under the hood. He pulls over only to discover his long lost friend, Charlie. Bitterness towards Charlie has Jasper spewing nasty things to her before leaving her. Jasper thinks Charlotte is there to interfere with the sale of the land that they are trying to build their new business on.
At the groundbreaking as Jasper digs into the ground, he hits something that isn't quite right in the dirt. Upon a little more digging, he realizes it is the dead body of one of the girls he had the one night stand with the night before. Jasper becomes a person of interest in the murder due to being the last person to see her alive. Charlie also finds herself in the middle of the murder investigation when she realizes the victim is her co-worker. As Charlie is being questioned by police it is made known her real last name, a name that is hated in Detroit. Jasper softens towards Charlie as he starts to realize she is not to blame for sins of her father and she is alone in all of this.
As Charlie and Jasper reconnect, their chemistry turns friendship into more. Charlie confides in Jasper that she is investigating her father's innocence. While he wasn't happy about this, he warms to the idea that their could have been more to the explosion that took so many lives. He agrees to helping Charlotte look into it.
As the murder investigation continues, the deck seems stacked against Jasper. Did he commit the crime? He only remembers bits and pieces of his night with the victim and the other girl. Seems like Jasper and Charlie seem to have the whole universe against them. Someone seems to be out to get Jasper at every turn. As the investigation continues, will these two be able to clear Jasper's name and find Eve's killer before he is arrested for a crime that he didn't commit? Will they figure out who is framing him for the murder?
There is an epic cliffhanger and I'm dying waiting for book 2. So glad we won't have to wait very long for book two! This book had my heart racing from the get go!! The chemistry between these two characters is electrifying!

Come let Jasper take you for a RIDE!

Ok I might have said this about the last book that I reviewed for Kim, but honestly, this time I'm for real! This is hands down her best book she's written! It's imaginative, charismatic with a touch of sultry sass and a mysterious twist you won't see coming! I was glued to the story of Jasper and Charlotte from beginning to end, and then to find out this is just the beginning! GAH! I'm sitting up and begging for more of Jasper in my life!
This is a little different then either your once friends turned lovers, or even second chance romance, which it is kind of both in a way. I truly believe after getting to know Jasper and Charlotte that if they weren't torn apart by the tragic happenings of their childhood, they would have ended up together in the end. They had that connection as children that truly drew them together. The protector always prevalent in Jasper's need to take care of the younger Charlotte, or well as he used to know her as Charlie.
Jasper is jaded, he's one of Detroit's bad boys, trying to make something of himself and revive a town that once thrived and flourished. He's been through the ringer since the tragic death of his father. But to see the man he's trying to become, the man he wants to be despite the tactics of others to keep him down, is endearing as much as it's commendable. Jasper has spent his life's work and every penny he has into building a prototype for the fastest sports car to hit the streets. But there is only one thing that stands in the way of his dreams.
Charlotte's life was dismantled by the mistakes of others. Something that she could do nothing about as a child. Left to her own devices and in the care of her aunt Charlotte has come back to her roots, where it all started. What does she want back in a town where nobody wants her. One thing. The Truth! I often felt like I could hear that line from the famous Jack Nicholson. "You want the Truth. You can't handle the truth." Even though at the end of this one we are left with more questions then answers, I have no doubt that the next chapter of this journey is going to bring much heartbreak and pain upon our Hero and Heroine!
Jasper and Charlotte's chemistry will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's the type of push and pull, you want and need in a good love story where the characters are supposed to really be at odds but can't fight the attraction. Jasper's need to protect her like he did all those years ago comes back full force the moment that danger steps in their way. You simply can't dislike him, even when he's being a royal jerk! Jasper's friends will warm your heart just as much as he does, all with the exception of one. I've still got my eye on him and I don't trust him. But alas I'll have to wait till part two, to get my answers! Overall the feels from this book will set you on edge and at times make you question your own assumptions and thoughts. I was seriously intrigued by this story and the characters that make up this new series! I can't wait for more! I encourage you to pickup Set The Pace today and let Jasper take you for a RIDE!

Kim Karr once again create a storyline and characters that pull you in right from the very beginning. Set in Detroit, SET THE PACE takes on cars and friends-to enemies-to lovers.
Jasper is an adrenaline junkie car maker who pushes the envelope. With this three best friends, he's putting his past behind him and pursuing a dream his father was never able to achieve. On the eve of what should be one of the greatest days in his young life, Jasper finds himself surrounded by death, the past and his old best friend Charlie.
Charlie is Charlotte Lane. She lived next door to Jasper until she was eight and was sent to live with her aunt. She's come back to Detroit determine to prove her father's innocence in the plant explosion that killed many, including Jasper's father. She never envisioned she's run into Jasper again, but when her job has her front and center on Jasper's biggest day, she discovers she still holds a soft spot for her old best friend.
Jasper and Charlotte. I don't think there is anything I could say that would convey ow much I enjoyed them. Even when they were pushing each other away, that bond they had as small children still shined through. And that bond grew as they got to know each other as adults. The playboy Jasper had been, mere days ago, goes away and he's committed to the one person that feels like home.
Kim Karr knows how to write a suspenseful storyline. The backdrop of broken Detroit. The mystery surrounding the plant explosion twenty years before and how those personally affected now find themselves embroiled in another Detroit mystery. I was immediately hooked and found myself questioning those around Jasper and Charlotte. Who was behind what was happening and why. I have my suspicions, but they'll have to wait until the second part of this duet comes out in the Spring.
SET THE PACE is definitely one to pick up. Kim Karr doesn't disappoint. You'll be anxiously awaiting the next book.
