wonderful areas of beauty and a dangerous jungle
By Berk Rourke
Welcome to the World of Terrene. But your stay cannot be long here. For Terrene will soon be destroyed by an asteroid. But its people are and have been industrious and imaginative as well as inventive. And they have discovered that the universe is full of parallel worlds. And the Terreneans have developed a way to create gateways to other worlds. They are anticipating the end of Terrene by sending teams of people out to search these new worlds, to discover if these new worlds such as Scintilla or Firmon, are capable and willing to take in some of the population of Terrene before the disaster occurs there.
Bailey is a young woman on Alpha Team. She is in life with Jess. They explore Firmon, a wild and uninhabited world of deserts, wonderful areas of beauty and a dangerous jungle. And that is where they decide to settle. The leader of the Postern Project, the man who operates the gateway system, and some others decide to go to Scintilla after being welcomed there. Before the asteroid destroys Terrene much of the population is moved. But still the loss of life is horrendous and includes very dear friends of Jess and Bailey.
This is a science fiction novel. It is short and very fast reading. It is very well written with many morals and strong ideas of what it would be like to seek out and populate a new world. Bailey, the optimist, would know that the problem in seeking and settling a new world is a new adventure, not the end of an old one. She will succeed. The people of Terrene are resilient and will succeed. And I cannot wait to read another novel starring this ensemble of characters. I give this book five stars because it has a very fast reading and enjoyable story that anyone, of almost any age could enjoy. Another fine science fiction novel by a wonderful writer, P.S. Winn. Give it a try. You will enjoy.

A Great Parallel-World Adventure
By Ian
I’ve read several books by this author and I keep coming back for more as her stories are always immediately engrossing. And they’re easy breezy reads that don’t require some of the time and mental energy of larger books that may also have hurdles to get over beyond their sheer length. She handles a number of genres deftly. That said, this is my favorite of the bunch so far. The hook chapter couldn’t have been more compelling if she tried, creating a great page-turning effect. I found myself instantly drawn into the lead character and his predicament and the mystery underlying his situation. I wanted to know more; I literally couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going on.
Our team of heroes, caught up in a parallel world to ours, are under the gun to find a suitable planet if they are to rescue their own people and their own civilization. With a ticking clock behind them, they’re forced to take greater and greater risks using their technology to access these parallel worlds. Simultaneously putting themselves in increased jeopardy at the very moment that they’re trying to save their world from peril. The entire setup makes for knuckle-biting effect and great adventure, which the author uses to maximum effect.
Some of the stand-out story elements for me, personally, were the eco-conscious digs about our world, as seen from the eyes of our alien visitors, and the opportunity the reader is given to reflect on how humanity has lost its humanity.
The heroes’ rapid aging when entering our world from their parallel world, their sliding in and out of different cultures at different times in their history as they entered other worlds, also leant the heroes greater empathy than they had going in, leaving us to think we stand to benefit accordingly when the time comes to unleash these new technologies in our world. How much has humanity benefitted already in the empathy department with the advent of the internet and instantly shared information; with a growing sense of the global village that comes in the wake of this technology. Imagine how much more so this would be the case once we have parallel-world traveling technology. This is exactly the position the author puts us in to brilliant effect.
P. S. Winn has done other parallel world and through the looking glass stories, and I’ve enjoyed them all, but this one is a favorite. As to why that is, that may remain due to some illusive substance in the elixir of the author’s novel or the reader.
But some other stand out features for me included the relatively new dynamic, historically speaking, of workmate partners being lovers that’s featured center-stage in Into the Doorways. Because of how intense and absorbing the story’s heroes’ jobs are, it would be impossible to truly share a life with someone otherwise. We can see how much this echoes trends in our world. Jobs are a hundred times as mentally demanding as they’ve ever been, and we’ve long lost any sense of “down-time”; demanding careers are twenty-four/seven. So it’s high time we explore workplace romance in our novels as a key feature of keeping them real.
Winn excelled at capturing the camaraderie of a tightknit group with dialogue; their exchanges were always natural sounding and intimate. The ad hoc family of a closely interoperating project team is well-exposed. Once again, this through-the-looking-glass glimpse of other worlds manages to put our own world in bold relief better than more traditional approaches.
I liked how in the process of trying to save their own world our heroes find themselves getting caught up in the dramas of the parallel worlds, trying to help people, and risking their own agenda. These were great dilemmas that echo all too well those we all face in the real world when trying to do what’s right. And watching them face these dilemmas head on went a long way towards humanizing our heroes.
Tension ratchets up in good thriller fashion any time they step through one of the doorways and things go entirely wrong and get out of control quickly.
The fact that these alien visitors come from a fairly enlightened world and every parallel world they go to, including our own, is far darker by comparison, could give this book a bleak dystopian feel. But the writer’s own narrative voice, her love of her characters, her faith in the human condition, instead shines a light into the darkness. It’s anyone’s guess as the book wears on if the alien civilization so worth preserving will have a chance to save itself fleeing to another parallel world considering the ticking clock they’re working with. All the more so as it appears “humanity” on so many worlds is anything but.
All in all, an awesome read. My only complaint is fairly minor. I thought the number of typos skirted the professional range, but it wasn’t enough to mar my enjoyment of the story.

A great holiday read, especially if you like the idea of travelling between parallel universes!
By Trelawney
As a fan of sci fi I’ve read quite a few parallel universe exploration books, so I was interested to see what Pam Winn had to offer here with Into the Doorways.
It was an interesting, easy reading kind of book. Some careful thought had gone into the speculative science behind the concepts of parallel universes and gateways, or portals. I liked the way she began by writing Earth off as a possible place for the people of the doomed planet Terrene to evacuate to! We had made too much of a mess of the place already! (She’s not wrong…) So, a number of other worlds had to be tested out by the intrepid research team. You got to know the characters quite quickly and the narrative moved on at a reasonable pace. I felt that it would have been still tighter and more page-turnable however if there had been less direct speech about routine things which were not actually contributing to the plot development. As this was quite a short book it would have been perhaps more dramatic as in the manner of a short story to tighten this up a bit. Having said that, I found it very readable and was interested to see what was going to happen to the characters.
The ending took me by surprise, as I had assumed that - without giving anything away here – there was going to be more follow-up about pioneering from scratch on a new planet. But perhaps that may appear in a future sequel?
Recommended for relaxing holiday reading.
