Living Like a Runaway: A Memoir, by Lita Ford

“Heavy metal’s leading female rocker (Rolling Stone) bares all, opening up about the Runaways, the glory days of the punk and hard-rock scenes, and the highs and lows of her trailblazing career

Wielding her signature black guitar, Lita Ford shredded stereotypes of female musicians throughout the 1970s and ‘80s. Then followed more than a decade of silence and darkness—until rock and roll repaid the debt it owed this pioneer, helped Lita reclaim her soul, and restored the Queen of Metal to her throne.

In 1975, Lita Ford left home at age sixteen to join the world’s first major all-female rock group, the Runaways—a “pioneering band” (New York Times) that became the subject of a Hollywood movie starring Kristen Stewart ad Dakota Fanning. Lita went on to become “heavy rock’s first female guitar hero” (Washington Post), a platinum-selling solo star who shared the bill with the Ramones, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Poison, and others and who gave Ozzy Osbourne his first Top 10 hit. She was a bare-ass, leather-clad babe whose hair was bigger and whose guitar licks were hotter than any of the guys’.

Hailed by Elle as “one of the greatest female electric guitar players to ever pick up the instrument,” Lita spurred the meteoric rise of Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, and the rest of the Runaways. Her phenomenal talent on the fret board also carried her to tremendous individual success after the group’s 1979 disbandment, when she established herself as a “legendary metal icon” (Guitar World) and a fixture of the 1980s music scene who held her own after hours with Nikki Sixx, Jon Bon Jovi, Eddie Van Halen, Tommy Lee, Motorhead’s Lemmy, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi (to whom she was engaged), and others.

Featuring a foreword by Dee Snider, Living Like a Runaway also provides never-before-told details of Lita’s dramatic personal story. For Lita, life as a woman in the male-dominated rock scene was never easy, a constant battle with the music establishment. But then, at a low point in her career, came a tumultuous marriage that left her feeling trapped, isolated from the rock-and-roll scene for more than a decade, and—most tragically—alienated from her two sons. And yet, after a dramatic and emotional personal odyssey, Lita picked up her guitar and stormed back to the stage. As Guitar Player hailed in 2014 when they inducted her into their hall of fame of guitar greats: “She is as badass as ever.”

Fearless, revealing, and compulsively readable, Lita Ford’s Living Like a Runaway is the long-awaited memoir from one of rock’s greatest pioneers—and fiercest survivors.

Review
“Fearless. ... A vivid account of life as ‘the one-and-only guitar-playing rocker chick who could shred like I did.’ ... A fast-paced read... and an inspiring one.” (Rolling Stone)

“[A] fun, often hilarious coming-of-age memoir of a rocker chick who can rip through serious lead guitar solos as good -- or usually better -- than the next guy. ... Delightfully detailed. ... [Ford] tells plenty of colorful ‘80s rocker stories. ... Freewheeling.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

“[A] tell-all book. ... No one lived larger than sexy heavy-metal guitarist and singer Lita Ford.” (New York Post)

“Ford is a surprisingly skilled raconteur - or is that rock-conteur. … The sex scenes provide the juice, but when she talks about learning solos straight from Blackmore, or out-jamming Holmes on stage, or writing songs with Osbourne, Ford proves that at heart she’s a great guitarist.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Heavy rock’s first female guitar hero.” (Washington Post)

“Heavy metal’s leading female rocker.” (Rolling Stone)

“One of the greatest female electric guitar players to ever pick up the instrument.” (Elle)

“Lita Ford is the coolest and most rock-n-roll female guitarist I ever heard. No guitarist-male or female-ever looked better with a Hamer Explorer than Lita.” (SLASH)

“The mother of all metal.” (Los Angeles Times)

“[A] legendary metal icon.” (Guitar World)

“Lita Ford, the shredding lead guitarist for the world’s first all-female rock band, the Runaways, tells her remarkable tale in Living Like a Runaway, a wild-ride musical memoir.” (Parade)

“Revealing [and] memorable. ... A celebration of Ford’s iconoclastic, take-no-shit spirit.” (Consequence of Sound)

“A chronicle of life as a woman in the male-dominated metal scene, Living Like a Runaway has been netting rave reviews; who says you can’t raise up the metal horns for a little literature?” (Gothamist)

“Required reading for any aspiring musician. ... Frank and funny. A page turner.” (Goldmine)

“Jam packed with stories of a truly eventful -- and impressive -- rock and roll life.” (Guitar World)

Fearless, revealing, and compulsively readable, Lita Ford’s Living Like a Runaway is the long-awaited memoir from one of rock’s greatest pioneers—and fiercest survivors.

“It was in the late spring of 1984 when I finally met Lita in person. Twisted Sister was just starting to tour, promoting our Stay Hungry album, and Lita Ford was the opener, working her second solo album, Dancin’ on the Edge. Having never gotten to see the Runaways live, I was truly impressed not only by Lita’s performing but also by her guitar playing. Here was a girl who could really play! And I’m not talking playing good ‘for a girl,’ I’m talking playing good for anybody. Lita Ford could wail, and night after night she rocked the house. Let’s face it, up to that point, with rare exception, a ‘female rocker’ was pretty much viewed as an oxymoron. Lita Ford was standing flat-footed on the stage each night, wearing denim and leather, shredding on her guitar, and daring anyone to deny her right to be there. And nobody could. Lita Ford was just what the women’s movement in the rock-and-roll world needed.”—Dee Snider, Twisted Sister, from the foreword

Praise for  Lita Ford and Living Like a Runaway

“Lita Ford is the coolest and most rock-and-roll female guitarist I ever heard. No guitarist—male or female—ever looked better with a Gibson Explorer than Lita.”—SLASH

“Lita? Now there’s one hot guitar maestro who has a hell of a story to tell. This book begs to be a film. Lita’s always been the best!”—ROBIN ZANDER, Cheap Trick

“Lita Ford is the Queen of Rock. There are some musicians who fall off the path, and there are others who blaze their own trails. Lita took the latter and refused to be ignored in a primarily man’s world. Lita will never leave us, ’cause she is the real deal.”—GLENN HUGHES, Trapeze, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath

“Not only did Lita Ford compete in a predominantly male-occupied world, but she also showed all the testosterone-and-adrenaline-driven rock guys how to do it. She came out guns blazing, a singer-guitarist heroine who brought the angst, the (bombshell) sex appeal, the ‘never say die’ attitude, and—dare I say it—the balls to show how it’s done. And many years later, when so many others have hung up their spandex leggings in favor of a midlife gut, she is still here.”—PHIL SOUSSAN,  Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, and The Vince Neil Band

Interesting for What it Says, and for What it Doesn't Say
By Muneraven
If you want a rock and roll kiss and tell book, Lita gives you that. Some of the stories are entertaining and satisfying because they are cool (Ritchie Blackmore) or funny (Eddie Van Halen) and others will make you sad because drug abuse can wreck people.

Don't expect insight into The Runaways. Other than outing some people who, as far as I know, never asked to be outed, you'll get nothing new here.

However, the book is most eloquent when you contrast the various things Lita says with other things she says. Her emotional instability lurks on almost every page but she clearly does not see this as a problem. The book is almost a study in what a person with a lack of self-awareness looks like. In one moment Lita is proud of her physically violent reactions to disagreements with people, in the next moment she is painting a portrait of herself as a kind person. I got whiplash as I tried to understand who Lita is from her own words. At the end of the book I understood: Lita is a person of extreme moods and she sees the world and those she meets through whichever emotional lenses she is wearing at any given moment. I'm not being snarky when I say that a good doctor might be able to help her even things out.

The saddest and most horrible part of the book is the part about her children. Because it came at the end, I had a lot of trouble picturing Lita as the perfect angel of a mother she says she was. That she lost all parental rights and visitation is terribly sad, but based on her own portrayal of herself, along with my knowledge of how reluctant the justice system is to remove even a bad parent from all contact with his or her children, her version of events didn't ring true at all. I don't doubt that Lita Ford loves her kids. I don't know her or her ex-husband, so I don't know what really happened. But a person who erupts into violence throughout her life and sees such incidents as positive or funny doesn't suddenly transform into the perfect mother. Bad-tempered people who have roller coaster emotions bring those traits to parenting unless they get a lot of counseling. This just made the whole section about her children a very tragic read, for me.

One last point: Lita Ford's lack of respect for Joan Jett is jarring in this book. Whether you like Joan Jett's music or not, there is no denying that she has remained true to her musical style and has worked constantly on tour for forty years. She is cited as an influence by so many rock musicians. She is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As the book goes on, Lita's resentment of Joan gets more and more weirdly petty. Joan didn't hug her back during a surprise backstage visit. Joan sounded tired on the phone. I guess, if that's the worst one can come up with, it says something about how Joan Jett conducts herself, lol, but there was no hint of respect for Lita's former bandmate's music in this book.

Lita Ford can play the guitar. She can strut and rock as well as any guy ever. Props to her for that. And props to her for having a life full of wild stories to share. I enjoyed many of her escapades. As for her personal life: I hope she finds balance and peace and that some of her frayed relationships are mended.

Dissapointing
By zman1975
I was let down! This book has no substance and is full of contradictions, fluff, and glaring omissions.

There's nothing of value here if you are interested in the actual music, and how/why she evolved from a punk rocker to a hair metallist....that would have been something I'd be interested in reading about..her evolution as an artist.

Plus, Lita not mentioning anything about Jim Gillette completely removes the only aspect of her career people didn't know about already. There's very little mention either as to WHY she/they moved to a remote island in the middle of nowhere - again, something that would have been interesting to read about.

It's also somewhat hypocritical of Lita to condemn the lack of respect women musicians had in the 80s and how they were objectified, etc when she was DOING IT HERSELF with her outfits in videos and own sexual behaviors!

There's also a pretty bad error in which the former editor of Metal Edge magazine (Gerri Miller) is referred to as a "HE" and referred to as "Jerry"..

This all said, I have the upmost sympathy for Lita in not being able to see her kids. I wonder what led to Jim getting full custody?????? He needs to write his own book so we can get the full story..or at least the other side. It will be interesting to see how her two sons turn out in life, given they were not afforded an education - being homeschooled by a former rock star with no educational credentials or qualifications is a risky proposition at best.....

As an aside, the accusations against Tony Iommi are quite damning....sounds like he was a first class SOB.....if what Lita says is true, I have lost all respect for him...

In summation, I regret buying this, and would have taken it out of a library instead.

This is NOT the Queen of Metal - Here's Why!
By blitz
I must admit, I was never a huge fan of Lita's music back in the day (I'm a thrash metal girl)...but I was a fan of LITA. Hey, I will give it up for any female who even TRIED to break into the metal world. It always bothered me that in those glory years she relied TOO much on her good looks (think the Kiss Me Deadly video) and not her talent - which was undeniable - to get ahead, but that being said, I was anxious to "read all about it" after all these years to see if she deserves the "Queen of Metal" title or not.
I am sad to say it this book left me feeling that deep down, Lita is really not very bright. Any of us who lived through the 80's Metal Scene (myself included!) had some screwups here and there, but you would think one would learn from it and get their head together by age 50+. Here is someone who had a loving family, a decent upbringing, and God-given talent, but still managed to get herself into one bad situation after another - men, management, substances, you name it. We've all been in a bad relationship or 2, haven't we? But to "let" some man whose "name you won't even mention" and who you admittedly never loved suck 17 years out of your life and somehow block you from your children forever? Come on. If she were the "Queen of Metal" I would think SOMEONE in the industry would have come forward to get her better lawyers or some other kind of help. The saddest part is, if she was never in love and things were going so badly, why even have kids at all? What a mess. She takes no ownership of anything she may have done (or not done) to lose her kids. You are left hanging and wondering WTF really happened - there are 3 sides to every story and you barely get her side straight, as she leaves so much OUT - I hate to be mean, but it is hard to feel sorry for her.
There are contradictions all over the book. She admonishes Tony Iommi for beating her up - yet gets in fights and beats up others and that's OK. She blames Sharon Osborne left and right for sabotaging her career - yet does nothing about it. She twice marries men she admits she never loved and wonders why she's unhappy and her career was nearly destroyed. You get the idea. I used to admire Lita & thought she was a "tough rock chick" - well not anymore. This book falls under "things you can't un-see"!
BTW, if you want to read a story of a "tough rock chick", try Chrissie Hynde's book, Reckless. I never got around to reviewing that book, but wow! What a story - I had no idea what she was all about behind that eyeliner! Chrissie was never Metal, but THAT is what a tough rock chick is all about!
As for the Queen of Metal - may I nominate Dora Pesch! Maybe SHE will release a book one day in addition to all her great music! In sum, I wish I had waited and bought a used paperback...oh well.

Poetic writing.
By Pamela Butler
These books satisfied my top desires. The characters become real individuals whom I care about. The language is full of poetry. To learn about an historical era filled with people both high and low born whose lives are shown in all their tragic and glorious detail, while full of adventure and love, is like finding a hidden treasure. Graham unfolds the fabric of life, the inner and outer person, young and very old. This author will not disappoint!

Rugged windswept Cornwall sets the scene for this rollicking saga
By Lynette McClenaghan
A riveting saga and compelling read. I recently returned to this unforgettable series which is much more than historical fiction. From the opening pages Winston Graham’s masterful storytelling is mesmerising. For readers seeking an entertaining and thought provoking read the Poldark series delivers. Each volume in this series begins with a dark and foreboding tone where the story fuses the intimate details of characters, their relationships and alludes to secrets and scandals against the detailed and well researched backdrop of the 18th Century. The prologue of Book One opens with Joshua Poldark on his deathbed giving an insight into Ross’s cynicism towards authority; his disgust towards the upper class’s contempt of the lower classes. Joshua’s discussion with his brother Charles reveals that he has not only refused to conform to the expectations of his class, but that he has been a hopeless womaniser who has attracted scandal. Before Ross learns that Elizabeth, pledged to marry him when he returns from the American War of Independence, is about to marry his cousin Francis. It’s clear he is about to be disappointed. Before Ross returns to Nampara it also becomes clear that he is at odds with the world he left. Enlightened by the American War his views already contrast with his class and his house is in a state of disrepair. Although he finds love with Demelza, a girl he rescues from the fair, this wavers with his affections for his old flame Elizabeth. Book Two opens with the birth of Ross and Demelza’s daughter, Julia, displaying the same foreboding mood and foreshadowing her death. Despite much of the tragedy and struggle that not only afflicts the working classes, but Ross and Demelza the dialogue is lively; wit, humour and sharp rhetoric often serve to lighten the conflicts, hardship, jealousy and tragedy the characters often face. Class conflict permeates throughout the series and is inevitable when Demelza’s family descend on the Julia’s christening. As Tom Carne (Demelaz's father) and John Treneglos engage in a confrontation Ross says, ‘Modes of manners vary with the breed…those with same codes can speak the same language.’ Class classes remain a key theme throughout the series, which also applies to the fiercely ambitious and ruthless George Warleggan, who despite becoming wealthy and powerful still stands out as new money and lacking the finesse of the gentry. Book Three opens as darker with the added crisis and suspense that Ross and Demelza face when Ross might hang for allegedly inciting a riot and participating in the plundering of a shipwreck. Love, jealousy, betrayal and fierce loyalty afflict the Poldarks alongside the caustic enmity between Ross Poldark and George Warleggan. Comparable to Charles Dickens, Winston Graham delivers a detailed and well-crafted story with a cast of complex characters that engage, absorb and sustain reader interest. Romance, jealousy and unrequited love feature alongside and highlight the problems associated with class prejudice. Greed and class antagonism against the backdrop of the French Revolution portrays a grim view of the world where happiness is hard won, fragile and fleeting.

The "BEST GIFT EVER" for my Son, a Doctor Who Fanatic!!! I ordered this one for myself, as well. Superbly Made! A+++
By Carbonlord
[[VIDEOID:fb61c266cd9ca07b242b44bc1ae013c4]]Completely blown away! This book is spectacular, I had a friend of mine send the UK version over for my son, back in December and I followed up with buying this USA version, as well. The covers are of a different metallic ink, and the pages in the USA are a touch lighter. My son is a gigantic Dr. Who fan, loves the new Dr. Who Lego set (Spectacular and Well Worth It!) and religiously has seen all episodes and knows all the Doctors. Admittedly, he is dragging me into what should have been my own subculture. I had no idea that the series kept going and when I explained it to him that Dr. Who was an old show of mine, we forged an even stronger bond, albeit he knows it all:)

This book was done beautifully and has excellent craftsmanship. High Quality pages that feature intricate designs of the Doctors and his various nemeses. The initial pages spell out “Doctor Who,” with a single letter on each page within the various design borders. The outside is top notch with a blue metallic ink for the Tardis.

He generally uses colored pencils which are fine. If you use markers, I would suggest a lighter touch and a backing page, in case of bleed through. On the back of each page, it details each image and shows a smaller version, which is really cool! He is totally in love with it, "The BEST GIFT EVER!!!" I ordered this USA version for myself, so we can enjoy them both, together. I have included some pics of the designs for you, Hope it Helps:)

Shortly before this evening, I will be uploading a matching video review. So you can get a real feel of everything in this awesome Dr. Who USA Version edition book.

45 Imaginative and Well Done Dr. Who Designs - printed on one side of page plus comparison to UK version
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:4f0e5a6bce21f6459fe8df29cf227d26]]My comparison of the US version of this book compared to the UK version will be towards the bottom of this review.

I really like the designs in this coloring book. Each of the Dr. Who's are represented in the book and are shown in an interesting silhouette style design with their heads literally filled with pertinent elements from their time as Dr. Who. There is a similar one for Missy as well. I took the time today to finish my personal favorite, the Tenth Doctor Who and the Tardis in Time and Space. The designs are well drawn with good black lines. Some designs are fairly open and easy to color while others are more intricate and will be a little more challenging but still a lot of fun.

The book is well made. The designs are printed on one side of an off-white colored non-perforated paper. The paper has a very smooth, almost slick feel to it. On the back of each page is a thumbnail version of the design along with a quote that is applicable to the design and which Dr. Who it pertains to as well as the name of the episode and the year it was filmed. The cream colored cover can be colored as well and has lovely deep blue foil touches to make it look extra special.

The publisher missed an opportunity by not providing designs on the inside of the fold-out, attached cover; however, there are two flaps you can color if you wish where the printing is white on blue background. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so removing pages is a matter of snipping threads. While a good number of designs merge into the binding, it will not matter if you remove the page by cutting the threads as you will retain the entire page. If you decide to cut the page out instead, you may lose portions of those designs.

Only my alcohol-based markers bled through to the back of the page. My water-based markers left a shadow of color on the back of the page. My gel pens and India ink artist pens did not bled through the paper. My gel pens required extra drying time. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper and behaved as expected for the type of lead with soft lead going on thick and blending extremely well. I would recommend putting a blotter page of some sort – chipboard, card stock, etc. under the page you are working on to keep ink from possibly getting on the following pages.

These are the coloring medium that I use for testing. If there is something else you feel I should be testing, please let me know and I will see if I can add it to my growing pile:

Markers: 1) alcohol-based – Copic Sketch, Prismacolor double ended markers (brush and fine point), Sharpies (fine and ultra-fine) Bic Mark-its (fine and ultra-fine) and 2) water-based – Tombows dual end markers (brush and fine point), Stabilo 88, and Staedler triplus fineliners

India Ink: Faber-Castell PITT artist pens (brush tip)

Gel Pens: Sakura, Fiskars, Uni-ball Signo in the following sizes - 0.28/0.38/0.5/1.0 and Tekwriter

Coloring Pencils: Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, Derwent Colorsoft, Prismacolor Verithins, and Faber-Castell Polychromos

I ordered and received the UK version of this coloring book late last year. When I order more than one version, I try to do a comparison for others to benefit from. In some cases (like “Animorphia” and “Lost Ocean”) there are distinct differences. In the case of Dr. Who, the differences are more subtle. The books weight the same at 1.07 pounds. That tells me that the same grade of paper was used. The covers are different colors (UK is white with cyan foil and the US is cream with deep blue foil.) The books are bound the same and the same images appear in both book. The books are the same height, depth and width. The pages of the books are a different color. The pages in the UK book are a true cream color. The US version is more of an antique white – with beige tones rather than cream. The designs are printed more distinctly on the UK version and in a side by side comparison, the US version seems a little less distinct. My coloring mediums worked the same with both books. If my photos post, the US version is at the top and the UK version is at the bottom.

In summary, I really like this book as a colorist. I find that I prefer the page color and ink of the UK version but if I had never seen it, I would have been completely happy with the US version. Getting two copies works well for my house as my husband wants one of his own. The subject matter of the coloring book is for a show that I have enjoyed for many years and I will be having a lot of fun with it. While the paper could have been improved and perforated pages would be appreciated, I didn't detract for those because the way the book was published made it less essential and more of a preference for my use of the book.

Allons-y!!!
By gilyco86
This is an excellent quality coloring book. The drawings are printed well and most are very intricate. The paper is smooth and off white in color. Many of the illustrations cover the page from edge to edge, while others have a void space. The binding is sewn and the pages not perforated. If you decide to remove pages, I'd recommend using a blade. You may, however, lose a small portion of the design on pages that go to the edge. I didn't have any trouble breaking in the binding while I was coloring with the book fully intact. Since the pages are sewn and not just glued there's little/no risk of the pages breaking loose from the spine.

The illustrations are printed on the front of each page with a thumbnail and corresponding quote on the back. Doctor Who fans will quickly recognize heros and villans among other cast and characters. Not every character from the shows/movies are represented in the book, but as I flipped through the book I do believe that each Doctor, including the War Doctor is represented in some way (many by their own full page silhouette).

I chose a mandala style illustration of Daleks and used my Marco Raffiné 7100 oil based color pencils when coloring my first page (Colored Pencils, Arespark 72-color Soft Core Art Coloring Pencils, Professional Drawing Pencils for Secret Garden, Artist Sketch Set/ Coloring Book (Not Included)- Set of 72 Assorted Colors). The colors went on smoothly and vibrantly. The paper probably wouldn't stand up to inks (pen or marker) without bleeding, so I would recommend using a blotter page of some sort so you don't ruin the next illustration.

For $9.29 this book is also an excellent value! It would make a great gift for the Whovian in your life or provide you with countless hours of entertainment.

Playing with Tigers: A Minor League Chronicle of the Sixties, by George Gmelch

In 1965 George Gmelch signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers organization. Growing up sheltered in an all-white, affluent San Francisco suburb, he knew little of the world outside. Over the next four seasons, he came of age in baseball’s Minor Leagues through experiences ranging from learning the craft of the professional game to becoming conscious of race and class for the first time.

Playing with Tigers is not a typical baseball memoir. Now a well-known anthropologist, Gmelch recounts a baseball education unlike any other as he got to know small-town life across the United States against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, civil rights protests, and the emergence of the counterculture. The social and political turmoil of the times spilled into baseball, and Gmelch experienced the consequences firsthand as he played out his career in the Jim Crow South. Playing with Tigers captures the gritty, insular, and humorous life and culture of Minor League baseball during a period when both the author and the country were undergoing profound changes.

Drawing from journals he kept as a player, letters, and recent interviews with thirty former teammates, coaches, club officials, and even former girlfriends, Gmelch immerses the reader in the life of the Minor Leagues, capturing—in a manner his unique position makes possible—the universal struggle of young athletes trying to make their way.

Review
"You don't need to have any particular team affiliation to enjoy this book. It really is a good book about a life journey that has a baseball flair to it."—Gregg Kersey, Gregg's Baseball Bookcase (Gregg Kersey Gregg's Baseball Bookcase 2016-02-28)

“A completely engaging, insightful tour of a lost era of the 1960s in baseball and America. . . . A ballplayer-turned-anthropologist, Gmelch skillfully applies his ethnographic skills to his own experience. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to want to read this fascinating, very personal, and often surprising story. Enthusiastically recommended.”—Robert Elias, author of The Empire Strikes Out    (Robert Elias 2015-04-22)

“George Gmelch is an astute guide to the magic and mystery of the Minor Leagues in the 1960s, and Playing with Tigers belongs alongside baseball memoirs by Brosnan, Bouton, Jordan, and Hayhurst. Anyone who cares about the people who play the game should read this insightful and intelligent book.”—Trey Strecker, editor of NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture (Trey Strecker 2015-03-04)

“A compelling glimpse into a vanished social world, the trials and tribulations of an aspiring Minor League Tiger, as well as the glimmerings of an insightful, productive social scientist who still loves and has a feel for the game.”—Daniel A. Nathan, president of the North American Society for Sport History and author of Saying It’s So: A Cultural History of the Black Sox Scandal  (Daniel A. Nathan 2015-03-04)

“A remarkable baseball story from an extraordinary anthropologist and writer.”—Dan Gordon, author of Haunted Baseball (Dan Gordon 2015-03-04)

“George Gmelch has written a true and compelling story of Minor League Baseball in the ’60s. . . . It’s an engaging and accurate portrait of the lives and work of Minor League hopefuls chasing the dream of making it to the Majors.”—Jim Leyland, former Major League manager of the Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins, and Pittsburgh Pirates

The Bat and the Book
By Howard J. De Nike
A professional memoir by one of America’s foremost anthropologists – but with a difference. The genre is filled with examples (see, for instance Geertz’s “After the Fact” [1995] or Mead’s “Blackberry Winter” [1995]). George Gmelch, however, offers recollections of his days as a professional baseball player!

Well before hearing the siren lure of ethnography in such exotic locales as Barbados, Alaska, and Tasmania, Gmelch wanted nothing more than to make it to “the Bigs” – as many a young man has dreamed before and since.

Gmelch first caught the eye of a Detroit Tigers scout (about the same time he received an acceptance to Stanford University), and signed a minor league contract with the ball club in 1965. Baseball’s priority over the next several years is beyond question, as the author vividly recounts his promotions and demotions.

Gmelch had the numbers – batting average and power – to justify optimism. But his journal entries during off-seasons at Stanford reveal a widening set of interests – Vietnam War protests and Civil Rights.

In Rocky Mount, North Carolina he became known among teammates for haunting the local library. The cool air and Bernard Shaw’s plays drew him in, but he also noted its “whites only” patronage. The Civil Rights Act may have been passed a few years before, yet Rocky Mount was doing its best to ignore the law. Jim Crow still reigned.

Readers will know the book’s outcome – that the author’s future was to lie in anthropology – so the degree of suspense is illusive. Genuine drama, however, is found in Gmelch’s description of his final days in the Tiger organization. At the time he was sending columns to his local newspaper reporting on Southern race relations, an exotic subject for middle-class California suburbia. What chance would there be that when he mentioned “the town’s police chief (is) a member of the Ku Klux Klan,” it would ever reach the attention of anybody back in Rocky Mount? But it did.

Thus followed an unraveling of baseball as the centerpiece of life until then. As Gmelch candidly puts it: “Baseball … was who I was.” Despite a hot bat, the Tigers shortly released him.

George Gmelch is fortunate: Few rookies survive the rigors encountered on the pathway to the Big Leagues, and in his soberest moments he must realize he had no guarantees on this score. He will always, nonetheless, be able to content himself with the knowledge that while his baseball career died, it did so for a higher cause, pursuit of “understanding people and culture.”

For lovers of a good baseball yarn and students of anthropology alike, "Playing With Tigers" offers solid insights and poignant reflections on every page.

discover what it was like to have been a minor leaguer
By DB361
I am 3 years younger than the author and grew up a Tigers fan in Toledo, Ohio. I always heard about these minor league teams but knew the managers only by their photos in the Tiger yearbook. What a treat to get to know them, discover what it was like to have been a minor leaguer. The author does a good job of describing the ups and downs of baseball while also telling us about his own difficult process of growing up in the 60's, eligible for the draft, and so on. I'm so glad this otherwise academic person took the time to share his younger days with us.

Read this book!
By Josh Ostergaard
Playing with Tigers: A Minor League Chronicle of the Sixties by George Gmelch is an enjoyable read and a thoughtful look back at “A” level professional baseball as it was played fifty years ago. It was recently published by the University of Nebraska Press, where it joins an excellent list of baseball titles.

In Playing with Tigers, Gmelch tells the story of his own career as a baseball player, from the first glimmers of an obsession that grew, in part, from being lucky enough to attend game four of the 1956 World Series in New York City as a twelve year-old, to his intense focus on perfecting his batting as a high school student, and all the way through playing in the Tigers organization and the Québec Provincial League in the mid-to-late sixties.

Gmelch, whose nickname as a player was “Moonbeam,” was the only one on his various teams to spend the mornings before games reading in the public libraries of the minor league towns he visited. Though he makes light of his reading choices from those days, which included Tom Wolfe’s The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby, the underlying truth is what makes this book a pleasure to read: Moonbeam Gmelch was different from the other players. His journals, rich with detail about minor league life, form the narrative core of the book. Alongside the highs and lows of his own performance at the plate, we glimpse the many ways Gmelch passed the time between games: from his habit of climbing light poles to get a better look at the countryside when nobody else was in the ballpark, to ignoring a tornado warning and sliding with teammates in storm-drenched grass, to his prank of posting a fake notice of promotions and cuts at the Tigers spring training camp in 1966.

I’ve read several baseball memoirs, but I’ve never read one with such disarming personal insight into both the day-to-day aspects of trying to make it in the professional sport and the ways that a player’s worldview can influence performance. With humor and even a little wistfulness, Gmelch tells the story of his own transition from being a baseball-obsessed player who cared mainly about fitting into the pants of Tiger great Al Kaline (literally and metaphorically) to a citizen whose attention was increasingly occupied by the Vietnam War and the wider range of social problems the war made visible. After being promoted to the Tiger affiliate in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Gmelch saw that Jim Crow conditions persisted despite the recent passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. His rising social consciousness and his once-simple dream of playing baseball for a living came into conflict, and the world is better for it. A few years after being cut from the Tigers—an interesting story that connects to his increasing political awareness that I’ll save for the reader—Gmelch completed a PhD and began his long and varied career as an anthropologist. This book is a compelling, pleasurable, and thought-provoking read, whether you are a fan of the Tigers, of baseball history more broadly, or are simply interested in learning how the major social conflicts and transitions of the sixties affected the life of one young man.

A Concise Book on BS/MD Programs
By Alfred R Becker
The Complete Guide to BS/MD Programs by Todd Johnson: a review

An ever growing number of high school students who want to become doctors are taking a long, hard look at applying to medical school directly out of high school. They have good reason. The traditional medical school process is highly competitive and it takes at least 8 years, between undergraduate and medical school, to finish. Gaining admission to a BS/MD program might allow them to avoid taking the MCAT altogether, while finishing medical school in as few as six years.

Todd Johnson's The Complete Guide to BS/MD programs, clearly explains the admissions process in seven chapters and an appendix which comprehensively lists all the BS/MD programs. The listings include the length of the program, a brief description of the program, minimum requirements for candidates, and, most importantly, the number of applicants, how many were interviewed, and how many were finally admitted.

The chapters I found particularly informative explained what you need in order to be competitive in most BS/MD programs, finding the right program, and the medical school interview. By the way, if you want to view portions of the book, along with the table of contents, just go to Amazon.com.

There are advantages and disadvantages to BS/MD programs. One advantage is, once you've been accepted into medical school, it allows you to concentrate on the learning process, rather than on groveling for grades, as most pre-meds must. As mentioned, it also might allow you to not take the MCATs and to finish the whole process much more quickly. There are also, of course, disadvantages. Assuming you¡¯re so capable as to gain admission to one of these programs (and they are as keenly competitive as medical school is), in all likelihood, you¡¯ll be equally able to get into medical school via the more traditional path, after attending a highly selective undergraduate school and then applying to an equally challenging medical school. Going to the more elite undergraduate schools might better position you to enter a more prestigious medical school, which could possibly land you in a more select residency program. Another disadvantage is that many BS/MD programs commit you to their program and prohibit you from applying to other programs (that information is in the book as well). Additionally, if you get accepted to a BS/MD program and decide that medicine is not for you, it might prove difficult transferring back into a four year baccalaureate program, depending on how compressed the college portion of the BS/MD program is.

Many of the competitive candidates have research experience, extensive volunteer activities, have shadowed physicians¡ so that they truly know what is involved with being a doctor-, and have a range of extracurricular activities that indicate commitment, passion, and leadership. Even with all this, they will still need to convince the admissions office at the medical school that they have what it takes to be a good doctor: a compassionate nature, the toughness to take on the pressures of medical school, and the ability to perform calmly under life and death situations. These qualities need to be addressed by the personal essays, recommendations, and the interview. The interview is a crucial factor in the BS/MD admissions decision. The Complete Guide to BS/MD programs covers what happens during the interview and the questions you should be prepared to answer.

Most importantly, the book contains a lot of questions you need to get answered about BS/MD programs: how does the program address clinical training; what is the pass rate for the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE)-parts 1 & 2; how good is the medical school in getting students into their top three residency choices; and what is the completion rate for the program?

The BS/MD approach is not easy. Most of the programs admit around 2-3% of applicants. Further, the competition is fierce: applicants to Brown's PLME, or Northwestern's HPME programs are usually in the top 1-2% of their classes and have average SAT scores above 2250. Yet, this might be a path most appealing to students seeking MDs. Certainly The Complete Guide to BS/MD Programs will make navigating this journey a lot clearer.

Practical Help for Getting into Med School
By Jan E. Rideout
BS/MD Programs--The Complete Guide: Getting into Medical School from High School is a must-read for any students thinking about a career as a physician. This book is focused on Early Acceptance Medical Programs (EAMPs) which allow students to combine their undergraduate programs with medical school. By combining these programs students can shave off two years, reducing a normal eight-year program to six years. The author, Todd A. Johnson of College Admission Partners, gives plenty of advice about what students can do as early as the eighth grade to groom themselves as candidates for EAMPs, but it is the specifics in the book that make this a must-read for any student applying to medical school.

There is information about medical school essays, about the day-long medical school interview, and about available medical programs, state by state. There is even information about how to finance the costs of a medical degree. But again, it's all in the specifics. Mr. Johnson provides actual medical school essay prompts from Brown University's Program in Liberal Medical Education to the combined program at Sienna College with Albany Medical School. You are also able to look at actual questions posed in medical school interviews. You can read about specific requirements, program information, and application deadlines for medical schools in the appendix; and you can learn about evaluating the best medical programs by looking at clinical experience, asking about residency matches, and finding out about the pass rate for the Unites States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE)--who would have thought to ask!

Finally, someone has come forward to help students navigate through the rather involved process of getting into medical school with practical considerations for how to prepare in high school; a guide to programs, especially programs that combine a college degree with a medical school degree; and solid tips about going through the process of applying.

Best Resource in an Important Niche
By Dr. Mark
One of the big problems in offering great college advice is the false notion of one-size-fits-all. Most college guidebooks and websites try to do it all, aiming at the largest possible market. The problem is that individual students have individual needs. They don't necessarily need to learn it all: they seek the best and most targeted advice to fulfill their needs and aspirations.

Fortunately, narrowly targeted college advice books are beginning to make their way into the field. For high school students who dream of becoming doctors, Todd A. Johnson's BS/MD Programs: The Complete Guide is an outstanding resource.

Subtitled "Getting Into Med School From High School," Johnson's contribution to the field has a razor-sharp focus on early admission medical programs, or EAMPs. These programs provide a gateway directly from high school to medical school. As Johnson explains, many universities have created pathways offering a more direct route becoming a physician, and these programs sometimes shorten the distance between one's freshman year in college and graduation from medical school.

The attractions of these programs are many. EAMPs can provide a sort of guarantee that can take the stress out of an undergraduate education. They can also reduce the number of years one must pay for undergraduate and graduate school. And they sometimes eliminate the needs to take the dreaded Medical College Admissions Test, or MCAT exam. However, as Johnson takes pains to discuss, these programs are not for everyone. EAMPs can be very intense, academically challenging, and can reduce the number of electives one might otherwise be able to pursue while an undergraduate. Plus, admission to these programs can be devilishly difficult.

Fortunately, Johnson offers plenty of sound advice on how to prepare oneself during high school, how to construct the application, how to write the essays for both undergraduate and medical school, and how to handle the interviews.

But perhaps the best resource for prospective students--and for college counselors--is the rich directory of EAMPs around the country. Listed by state, the directory offers detailed information on admissions statistics, curriculum, and the general features of each EAMP.

This book is a must-have for college counselors. And if you're one of those students who has dreamed of becoming a doctor since childhood, there is no better resource for exploring the early pathway options to enable you to move directly from high school to medical school.

I love my company and my work
By Melinda S.
I was gifted my copy by my sister-in-law who works for a different network marketing company. Once I opened it, I couldn't put it down. This book is everything. I love my company and my work, and I've always believed in what we are doing. But now, the confidence that I have in speaking about this business model has skyrocketed. I can go up to any Wall Street banker, working 80+ hours a week and making $750,000 and tell them with complete confidence that what he/she is doing is ludicrous and what I'm building with my company is brilliant! I've since purchased dozens of copies for friends, my consultants, etc and have hundreds of people on my team who have done the same. It's a must-read with our fast growing team! I couldn't love this book more! You girls nailed it!

There are so many fantastic new books about network marketing out there
By Martha Finney
There are so many fantastic new books about network marketing out there! This remains my all-time favorite to give people I know are potentially great business partners -- who just need an updated idea of what today's network marketing is all about. Its personality is spunky, a little contrarian in a happy, friendly sort of way, and the success stories will keep your belief fed. (Btw: Even though Janine and I have the same last name, we're not related. So this is a legit review -- it's not like I'm in her will or anything!)
