Devotionals with a NASCAR theme are very user-friendly

Lee Warren brings his love of NASCAR and experience as a sports reporter to this unique devotional book. Racin' Flat Out for Christ is a window into the world of National Association of Stock Car Racing, where risk, danger, and speed require courage and focus. He has covered this unique American sport for a variety of Christian publications.

This slim paperback is a collection of spiritual lessons learned by NASCAR drivers who are driven by their faith, opening with Trevor Bayne, the unlikely surprise winner of the 2011 Daytona 500 in his second career NASCAR Sprint Cup start. In this devotional, Warren combines his reporter's instinct, his love for the sport, and his search for authentic Christianity amidst squealing tires and burnouts near the finish line.

Racin' Flat Out for Christ is a very readable collection of short devotionals, accessible to both NASCAR fans and readers with little or no prior knowledge of this intense sport. Warren did not set out to gather stories that put NASCAR drivers and crew chiefs on a pedestal. Instead he frames each 400-word theme on how, in his own words, "... a holy God intervenes in the lives of, and often uses, imperfect people in the sport of NASCAR."

Follow-up questions at the end of each vignette facilitate reflection; during personal devotional time or within a small group Bible study session. Although Warren's book does not target gender or a specific age group, the sports theme and relational narrative are particularly suitable for that sometimes hard to reach demographic: teenage boys. Racin' Flat Out for Christ is a great resource for father-son discussions.

The Mindset of a Winner

Lee Warren's book, with 30 quick reads, could be used as a daily devotional, but it goes beyond the typical format of Bible verses and prompts to implement them in our own lives. Through stories of NASCAR drivers and their associates, Lee puts the reader in the mindset of a winner. Most of the drivers featured do not win races very often. Some are young and struggling; some are seasoned and struggling to succeed in an increasingly competitive, high pressure environment. However, as Lee demonstrates, they win when they stay focused on God and refuse to let anyone or anything else define them.

Wisely, Lee begins the book with a disclaimer, noting that the people he spotlights are not perfect. We've seen many of their temper tantrums and other antics televised. The writer presents an honest picture of their ups and downs, and--without preaching--he shows that their walk with Christ is what ultimately keeps each one of them on track.

You may have heard some of the stories Warren tells already, but his personal contact with NASCAR insiders, his journalistic style, and his own heart for Christ create a distinct and uplifting work.

Good so far

Been reading this whole series so far and this is the 1st one that really grabbed me and I didn't want it to end. I do hope they add more depth to the bad guys but I like seeing Supes get kinda pissed. I feel like we might get to actually see a cool, kinda dark, and very angry Superman. All in all I am enjoying it so far. Its not the Best Batman but it sure isn't the worst

Not as good as Issue #1 and #2, but still a great read

A bit slower and the villain isn't that interesting (I am evil an Kryptonain, earth is mine, worship me, yadda yadda yadda), but there are some spectacular moments that kept me interested and left me wondering "What happens next?"

Solid work. Can't wait til Issue 4 on 4/27/16

Having known and worked with Frank Mankiewicz over the years, his memoirs are the next best thing to having lunch with him. I hear his voice on every single page, I also learned remarkable and surprisingly untold stories of growing up in Hollywood, about the early times at the Peace Corps, his days with Bobby Kennedy, his leadership at NPR, and the years since. If there is a real-life Zelig, it may be Frank, who turned up during every monumental chapter of public life in America for nearly 75 years. This book truly helps define the people and the eventful times he lived in, as told through his wit and his love of language. He could have no better navigator, sidekick, wingman and alter ego than Joel Swerdlow to help commit these stories to print, and produce the book I've longed to read and to own for years and years.

Oh, what a delicious yeasty read!

Frank Mankiewicz was an icon to my generation of journalists. He served in a world war and then bestrode the upper reaches of American politics, broadcasting, Hollywood royalty, and (as he might have said) the literature racket. It was Frank who gave the world the wrenching news of the death of Bobby Kennedy, whom he loved and served admirably as press secretary. Frank himself was taken from us not long ago, but his rich gladsome storytelling spirit is now available forever in this blithe, informative recounting of his life and of the America that his life helped form. I don't think I have read such well crafted and loving prose-writing from a charmed and charming life since Moss Hart's "Act One."

The book does a remarkable job of capturing the essence of a remarkable man. It's all so conversational, but it's extremely hard to make this work well, and the author pulls it off in a big way. The sad thing is there aren't men like Frank Mankiewicz coming down the pike.

Gideon Haigh has been a journalist for more than thirty years, contributed to more than a hundred newspapers and magazines, written thirty books and edited seven others. His book On Warne won the British Sports Book Awards Best Cricket Book of the Year Award, the Cricket Society and MCC Book of the Year Award, the Jack Pollard Trophy, and the Waverley Library Nib Award; it was also shortlisted for the Australian Book Industry Awards Biography of the Year, the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, and the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature. The Office won the NSW Premier's Literary Awards Douglas Stewart Prize for Non-fiction. Other recent titles include Uncertain Corridors: Writings on Modern Cricket, End of the Road? on Australia's automotive industry, and The Deserted Newsroom, about media in a digital age.

Interesting

An interesting read but, for me, it fell short in exploring the detailed forensics of Williams' murder - which may have shed more light on Kerr's guilt or innocence. Maybe, in the late 40's forensic evidence was in short supply. I believe there is one clue - that is alluded to but not explored - which might hold the possible answer. An open finding for me.

Outstanding examination of a crime

This is outstanding true-crime writing. The author's deep research and judicious assessment of the available evidence make this a memorable treatment of the crime and its perpetrator and of Australian society and policing methods of the time. Don't think you will be able to read it in bursts: the narrative will take hold of you.

Mr Haigh has long been a favourite scribe. His musings on cricket are so insightful, his choice of words precise. Informed and intelligent, yet inclusive and conversational. A dry wit and deft turn of phrase. It seems so effortless, which is the trick the rest of can only aspire to. I bought this because I wanted to see how he handled subjects outside the oval and sporting sphere. And handle them he does. Wonderfully. A difficult, complex matter investigated with aplomb. Haigh has a way of elevating his subject without putting it on a pedestal. It's clear and well formed, like he's turning a cricket ball in his hand. Seeing it from all sides, and tossing it in our direction to appreciate. If he is aware of this subtle gift of tone, you wouldn't know. He just observes events keenly, considers the pieces and lays them bare. Engaging, engrossing and entertaining. If he wrote the phone book, I would read that too.

During the fourth year of the Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president of the United States, and Adolf Hitler was in power over Germany. Conditions in the United States were barely livable for most families, including Joe Rantz and his family. Joe was at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Joe and his classmate, Roger Morris, were headed to the shell house on campus to try out for the Rowing team along with 175 other boys. Joe was particularly nervous about the tryouts. If he made the team, he had the promise of a part-time job on campus and would be able to marry his high school sweet heart, Joyce.

Al Ulbrickson was the rowing team's head coach. He was always sharply dressed, which, along with his assertive demeanor, demanded respect from all of the boys on the team as well as the press. Joe knew how important this year's freshman team was; if he could train the boys properly, he would be able to take them to the 1936 Olympics. Although many other West Coast colleges had been to the Olympics before and even brought home medals, no University of Washington coach had ever come close.

Royal Brougham was a particularly tenacious member of the press who tried the hardest to pry a statement out of Al. Royal saw the rowing team as an opportunity to improve his hometown's image and set out to be one of the biggest advocates for the team.

At the same moment in Germany, Hitler and his staff were walking through a stadium built for the previous 1916 Olympics, which were cancelled because of the war. Hitler was not a fan of the Olympics. The idea of different races participating together in the games was appalling to him. However, when he toured the old stadium, he announced that he would have it expanded to fit 100,000 people, much to the shock of his staff.

The best narrative non fiction I've read! Daniel James Brown researched four years and wrote a sensational true tale of nine boys in a boat....a rowing shell. Through life's many challenges, they overcame every obstacle to row their way to the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany. These young men, determined, mentally tough, physically amazing.....inspire all of us to be better human beings.

Exceptional Young Men Excel During the Depression

Who could imagine that a book about college rowing would be fascinating to an older woman? I was sitting next to an older gal on the plane and she recommended it to me. The background of the "rowing" is a young man's coming of age, the rural Northwest, and college life in the 30's. The background is very fascinating and the description of the artisan who makes the boat, the coaches, the politics of sports competition, and the world events all combine to make a fascinating tale.

Excellent. A blend of Nazi history, the depression, dust bowl, family strife, the persistent rise of Joe through it all, and competitive rowing. All blended together in an informative, entertaining way. Well worth reading. A real page turner!

This book teaches you how to breathe properly, some basic stretching, side ache prevention, and more. I recommend this book to anyone interested in running for basic health or if you are competing in competition.

The Tricky way to get the Rose

Shortly before the events of the first book of the Bad Habits Series, With a Twist, Rose and Tricky (Patrick) had been in a relationship. One that eventually imploded, primarily due to the fact that all of the big conversations about how they felt, where they hoped their relationship was going ... all of it, were all continually put off, leaving nothing but guesses and assumptions to fill the void, and we all know what they say about assumptions.

Throughout both books, West and Lily's story and Cooper and Maggie's (Chaser), both Rose and Tricky are there in the background. Neither happy about their recent break up, neither hopeful of a possible reunion, neither ready to move on. Just stagnating, each in their own little pool of torment and turmoil.

Last Call, tells the thought provoking and heartfelt story of what happens when they separately resolve to do just that. At least Tricky resolves to get back together with Rose even while Rose has determined that its time to move on without him.

Rose's attempts to find someone new in a modern city filled with millions of people are disturbingly funny, and at times bittersweet, while poor tragic Patrick finally has an objective ... get Rose back ... but no plan as to how.

Woven through it all are wonderful subplots dealing with the themes of living your passion, addiction, loyalty and above all, friendship, since at the end of the day its friendship that brought this wonderful cast of characters together in the first place, not least of all Tricky and Rose themselves.

Written as a interrelated standalone from alternate POVs I could clearly see how this book would work on its own, but appreciated the richness that reading the other two stories beforehand added to the feel of the relationships and cohesiveness of the central group of characters.

Staci Hart's writing style was easygoing and enjoyable with the drama and shenanigans liberally scattered throughout creating a complex web of ideas and characters that all accumulated into a beautiful little gem of a book that I simply didn't want to put down.

I firmly expect it wont be too long before I go back to the start and re-read the entire series. Loved it.

OMG THESE TWO!!!

‘Let me give you relationship advice. Don’t date the guy down the hall, because when he dumps you, you can’t get away.’

OMG! OMG! OMG! I love this series and I love this author! These two characters in particular are ones that I have been waiting on and could not wait to dive into their story. Rose and Tricky have a past full of explosive chemistry, hurt feelings and actions that are almost impossible to move past. And boy does all this excite me to no end!

‘How do you move on when she’s the only thing that feels right? I’d been looking for the answer for seven long months,’

When Tricky dumped Rose without warning seven months and it broke her heart, when he immediately showed up at the bar she worked with a new hot date she swore she would never go back there again and despite constantly wanting him she has stood firm in her decision. But now Tricky is crashing everyday in her apartment, thanks to his roommate, Wes, and her roommate, Lily, having loud sexcapades all our of the night in his apartment. Now Rose is forced to decide if she can handle being around the only man to tempt her into going back on what she says. Her want for him has never wavered but the fact that she cannot trust him with her heart still stands firm.

‘Lying there with him, I realized our situation was about as stable as nitroglycerin,’

Rose is a wonderfully strong willed and no holds barge heroine. She takes no s*** and doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do. Tricky, Tricky, Tricky . . . I wanted to be mad at him. I really did, he hurt my girl. But damn if I didn’t love him deeply and I was internally begging her to forgive him and allow that hot piece of man back in her bed and her heart. He was broken but still when it came to her he was sweet, tender and overwhelmingly loving. These two had so many issues to overcome but together they prove that you can’t mess with fate no matter what your brain tells you.

“With everything hanging between us, I don’t know how to find happy with her.”

Staci Hart is once again written a book that I devoured in one sitting. With her swoon worthy men and her strong and independent heroines this series is a must read for me. The group as friends is almost as intriguing as the individual romantic relationship. They are fun, witty and the kind of group you wish you were apart of. The book is listed as romantic comedy and while it is funny to me this book was so much more. The emotions and pain went deep and the journey for them was the hardest of the series yet. No matter if you are reading this as part of the series or as a standalone I promise you that you will fall in love with these characters, the story and the beautiful writing.

This was my first time reading something from this author. I didn't mind the story line but it was drawn out. I felt that at times it went very slow. The characters were written pretty well.
The lead female, Rose, drove me crazy. Ugh, she made me want to scream and throw my iPad. She was wishy washy with Patrick. One minute she hated him the next she didn't. Seriously pick one and roll with it.
Patrick is a guy who made a mistake and has regretted it since. He has given Rose her space but is now determined to make her see that he is a good guy and he is the guy for her.

I wish I could say I finished this book and loved it but that isn't the case. I personally just couldn't get into. I hope that others do, just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean that the author didn't put her all into it, it just means I just didn't get caught up in it.

Be aware... not the same as the ACT

If you are going to use this text as practice, please know that these are not actual tests AND that the reading passages in this text are longer than the passages on the actual test. The ACT is already a test of speed, and students have extra lines in these passages that can add up to almost a full extra reading. We recommend adding about 8 minutes to the time for the reading section.

Essential For Any ACT Prep

No matter what study method you chose for the ACT's the most important element is to sit down and physically take practice tests. Kaplan has a number of Test Preps and study guides, but this one pulls out JUST the practice tests (8 of them) and the answers.

This makes it a great solution for someone who is taking an in person or online class as a core of any studying is to take physical practice tests.

Invaluable Compilation of Eight ACT Practice Tests With Answers and Detailed Explanations

There's no emphasis on the ACT at my son's high school; the school seems to assume the college bound teens will take the SAT. For some teens, however, the subject oriented ACT may be a better choice than the SAT. As this Kaplan practice test book indicates, the ACT covers English, Math, Reading, Science and has an optional writing test. This is a practice test book as opposed to the type of study guide that would provide a substantive subject review. The Kaplan book is 817 pages and consists of eight full length ACT practice tests (a total of 1,738 questions) with sample essays and answers that provide detailed explanations.

The eight practice tests in this Kaplan book are an excellent resource for a couple reasons. First, in that my son will be a junior next year, he can take these ACT practice tests this summer to gauge if he feels he might score better on the ACT than SAT, in which case he'll take both exams. Second, if he does decide to take the ACT, working through all of these practice tests will definitely help prepare him for the real ACT exam, and he'll feel more confident and comfortable with the material walking into the ACT exam. This Kaplan book consisting of eight full length ACT practice exams is excellent practice for preparing for the ACT, and it gets five stars from me.
