In his seven decades in entertainment, Joel has acted in over a dozen Broadway productions, over twenty films, and countless television appearances. Along with his work on the stage and screen, Joel is a renowned photographer. He lives in New York City.

A lot of errors...

I have mixed feelings about the memoir--other reviewers here have eloquently expressed their reservations about the content. (I definitely come down on the side of TMI about sex life and could have included substantially more material about show biz experiences and professional development.) This is not so much a review, but a comment on changing publishing practices. I have a background in publishing. Up until about 10-15 years ago, publishing houses had in-house copyediting departments, and all titles would be copy-edited, fact-checked, and proofread. Nowadays, this work is sometimes farmed out and performed on a freelance basis, or it's not done at all. This book is quite full of errors and contradictions, as well as the occasional typo. For example, the author's chronology is not consistent. At one point, when first meeting his wife-to-be, he mentions being 29 years old; two years later, he mentions being 28. Lotte Lenya is identified as being "Brecht's widow"; she was in fact married to Kurt Weill. Many more of these. Where's the editor? It's a shame that apparently there was no one available to check any of these items. Perhaps if there is a reprint, they will be corrected at that time.

It's tough to hide yourself...

It's tough to hide yourself from yourself as actor Joel Grey seems to say in his new memoir, "Master of Ceremonies". Grey, now 83, has "outed" himself in print, after living as a gay man all his life. He tells his story in an engaging manner and there's a lot for the reader to think about.
Joel Grey - born Joel Katz in Cleveland - came from an entertainer father and mother who loved being related to talent. Their marriage was long and didn't seem particularly happy; his father was loving to his sons, while his mother was of a mercurial temperament. Both came from Jewish immigrant families and both sides of the family moved from Cleveland to Los Angeles when Mickey Katz struck it big in show business. Joel had been performing in local Cleveland productions and continued his career in fits and starts in Los Angeles. Eventually, he, too, was employed as a Broadway star and acclaimed film and TV actor. He was one of the few actors who won both a Tony (Broadway) and Oscar (film) for the same role - The EmCee in "Cabaret".
But Joel Gray struggled with personal issues for most of his life. He was gay or bi-sexual. Long attracted to men, he knew early on he wanted to marry a woman and raise a family. Indeed, he married Jo Wilder and they had two children, before divorcing after 20 or so years of marriage. He had had relationships with men before marriage, but stopped during his marriage. Or so he told himself; in truth, his trysts with other men, mostly, like him, married, were not in his mind, "cheating". Having sex with men was not like having sex with women during a marriage, he rationalised. Since his divorce in the early 1980's, Grey has explored his sexuality and finally come out as a gay men.
"Master of Ceremonies" is equally about Grey's personal and work life. They could not always have been easy to combine, but Joel Grey seems to have reached the age of 83 with a certain personal peace and acceptance. That's nice to read.

“The only truly safe place for me was the theater.”

In “Master of Ceremonies,” we learn that Joel Grey was a short Jewish kid with a moody and dominating mother who dressed “her prized possession” in flamboyant outfits. Unsurprisingly, his peers bullied him. Grey came of age at a time when few men dared admit that they were gay. After he divulged the truth about his sexual orientation to his mother, she retorted: “Don’t ever touch me again. You disgust me.” He never forgot her chilling words. Fortunately, Grey’s sweet-natured father, Mickey Katz, a gifted clarinetist and saxophone player, remained loyal and supportive. Joel sang, danced, told jokes, and did impersonations in Mickey’s Yiddish-American revue, “Borscht Capades.” However, Joel was already thinking about the future. He wanted to make his mark in the theater, and in spite of his preference for men, hoped to marry and start a family someday.
Grey took pride in putting his unique stamp on the roles he played. Most memorable, of course, is the iconic master of ceremonies in Cabaret. It is fascinating to learn that the Emcee was, at first, a peripheral character. Grey fleshed him out, portraying him as a “mercenary, lascivious, and menacing” presence whose outrageous behavior pushed the boundaries of propriety, even in an already degenerate Weimar Republic. Grey takes credit for placing greater emphasis on the Emcee, “who turned out to be not only the glue but also the essence of the show.” For his efforts, Joel Grey earned a Tony and an Oscar.
With the able assistance of co-author Rebecca Paley, Grey recalls both amusing and painful episodes from his volatile childhood in Cleveland and Los Angeles. In spite of his torment at having to conceal a major part of his identity, Grey looks back with pleasure at his more than seven decades in show business. He tells intriguing anecdotes about what it was like to work with Hal Prince, Bob Fosse, Liza Minnelli, and other celebrities, and recounts the highs and lows of his twenty-four year marriage to Jo Wilder. Grey can be tough on himself, but he also has a substantial ego. He provides too much information about his many liaisons with both men and women. Still, “Master of Ceremonies” is an entertaining, candid, and poignant memoir by a talented and hard-working performer. Joel Grey, who is eighty-three, may regret some of the choices he made over the years, but he seems, at last, to be comfortable in his own skin.
