Nice addition/supplement to the Princeton Review's "Best Colleges" book
By Paul Allaer
"Colleges That Pay You Back - 2016 Edition" (2016 publication; 480 pages) is from the same publisher (The Princeton Review) which brings a number of other college-search books, including the excellent "The Best 380 Colleges" (beware, that number changes yearly). So why the need for this book? Two things that I can surmise: (1) the "Best Colleges" book, which originally started out at 250, is creeping towards 400 now, and in need of a trim, frankly; and (2) given the cost of attending college, it has become more paramount than ever for colleges to demonstrate that going there is a good "bang-for-the-buck" or "return on investment".

The book opens with a number of handy lists bringing us "Great Schools for the Highest Paying Majors" (looks like any kind of engineering major is the way to go, but in particular Petroleum Engineering, with its eye-popping median starting salary of $101,000). Other fun lists include the Top 50 Colleges That Pay back (Cal. Institute for Technology is ranked no. 1), Best Schools for Internships (GW is ranked no. 1), etc. After that we get the School Profiles, and if you are familiar with the "Best Colleges" book, it will immediately look very familiar. Each school gets 2 pages, divided into several charts, data and subject matters. I carefully looked at the entries of a couple of schools that appear in both the "Best Colleges" and this new book, and what I found was that the popular "Survey Says" segment from the "Best Colleges" book is no longer, but instead we get the all-important "Career Information from Payscale.com", where the editors post the ROE ("Return on Investment"), based on such factors as median starting salary, median mid-career salary, % alumni who recommend school, % alumni with high job meaning and satisfaction, etc. I cannot independently verify to what degree these ratings are real or bogus, but based on the high reputation of The Princeton Review, I'll go with it unless someone demonstrates these ratings are bogus. I am most familiar with colleges in Ohio (where I live and my oldest went to college) and DC (where I and my youngest went), and it's hard to argue with the colleges that made the cut (such as Miami University, with an ROE of 88 (down from 89 last year), and GW, with an ROE of 87, up from 85 last year, just to name those). I am impressed with the fact that the tuition and the room & board numbers have been updated again from the most recent "Best Colleges", which came out just last July. I look at those numbers, and just shake my head in disbelief (GW, which I attended in the mid-80s, now costs $63,760/yr... say what?!?).

Bottom line: I find this to be a nice addition in the Princeton Review catalog of college-search books, and it works in particularly well in combination with the "Best Colleges" book. As a further aside, I should mention that the Princeton Review last Fall came out with a new book called "Colleges That Create Futures", narrowing the field down further to just 50 colleges, and with thoughts and suggestions that challenge traditional wisdom and thinking big time. "Colleges That Pay Back - 2016 Edition" is not the first book that anyone new to the college-search process will want to consult, but once you have narrowed your list of top target colleges, and assuming they make the cut of these 200 best value colleges as profiled here, this will be essential reading. "Colleges That Pay You Back" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Marginal value as a supplemental guide- likely not your primary guide
By David W
There. is marginal value in this book as supplemental material to another main college book as your primary source (like Princeton Review's Best Colleges). For most things I would rate it lower, but considering that chances are that you are looking at a six figure investment for college, it may be worth the $17 to buy it on Amazon. I would not make this my primary guide, although there is not a lot of information that is in the Best Colleges guide that is not in here.

Here's what you get here that is not easily and readily available in the Best Colleges guide:
1. A list of tips for getting financial aid. (not a bad short list)
2. A list they call great schools for getting the highest paying majors. But this list is not overly impressive. The high paying majors essentially come down to a laundry list of STEM majors and then which schools offer those majors. Even though it calls it great schools for getting those majors, I happen to know some of the schools listed for some majors as being not particularly strong in those majors, but they are included because they offer Civil Engineering- not because their Civil Engineers are particularly highly sought out specifically. There are a couple of majors listed that I would not have thought were particularly lucrative, for example Food Science, so there's some value here,
3. A very good process I would say on considering the true return on investment of the school, taking into account starting salaries and cost of tuition minus grants. They don't subtract loans because you have to pay back those at some point- you are just delaying paying the piper. This is the best part of the book but be aware that it's only a handful of pages.
4. Lists that include different factors in how good the payback is in the above. They include a list of 25 schools that pay you back if you are unlikely to demonstrate need which can also be useful because most books tend to assume everyone gets the same amount of need. The biggest drawback I see in these lists is that for public universities they don't distinguish between in state and out of state, so as an example Berkeley is the highest rated public school on the list of paying you back. But my guess is that it takes into account either the lowest tuition (for California residents) or some type of average (which does no good for in state or out of state). It would be much more useful to see a list that has Berkeley listed as #9 if in state but #84 (or whatever the math works out to be) for out of state. A final list that talks about the schools that most make an impact based on surveys of students, in case starting salary is not the most important factor for you.

The school write-ups are similar but not identical to those in the Best Colleges book. It includes a "Bang for your Buck" paragraph that includes a little bit of info I don't see in the Best Colleges. It has a paragraph on career and how the school helps with that planning, and oddly enough it includes more info on student organizations than the Best Colleges book that we have (although maybe the 2016 Best Colleges Book has the same info- not in our edition though). I see one statistic that is not included in Best Colleges on Average Need Based Scholarship. There are also statistics from Payscale.COM on median starting salaries for a few different conditions that you could probably find for yourself IF you went to the effort to do so, but there's something to be said for having this information in one place at your fingertips.

So net, there isn't a LOT here that isn't in the Best Colleges book. There's the convenience of the Payscale.COM info. There's a little more info on career planning on each school, and there is the somewhat valuable lists of colleges that best pay for themselves with the caveats I give above. For most people, you're immediate reaction is likely to be it's not worth the investment for what you get, but I do think when you are talking this large a dollar investment and also something that impacts your child's life in such a large way, a small nugget that helps aid in the search can be worth it. But be aware of what you are getting when you buy this.

And as a closing, if you've read this far, and are considering one All-Purpose College Guide, we have both Princeton Review's Best College Guide and Fiske's Guide to Colleges, and I consider the Fiske's Guide to be the superior of the two.
