Review
"Reading Ellyn Oaksmith's Funny Is the New Sad is like thumbing through a photo album. Each snapshot offers a different vignette--touching, startling, always funny and sad at the same time. She shares these vignettes with a rare combination of incisiveness, sensitivity, and humor. Her journey has been far from typical, and her willingness to allow readers to laugh with her and ache for her is a generous gift." -- Judith Arnold, USA Today Bestselling Author.
From the Author
Funny is the New Sad is a new and rather scary kind of writing for me. It was written as part of NANOWRIMO 2015, a challenge for writers to complete a novel in the month of November. Although I'd always been fascinated with the idea of writing a memoir, it wasn't until I was nearly finished writing my first young adult novel, Chasing Nirvana, that I noticed the parallels between the main character and myself. Although the heroine of chasing Nirvana isn't depressed, her story brought up my own struggles as a young woman dealing with depression. Writing this book was by far the most emotionally draining writing I've ever done because these stories are based on my life in my 20's. As Charles Dickens said -- "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." Humor is a very important part of my life, not only in my fiction but as a way to cope with pain, fear and doubt on a daily basis.

Quick, fun, insightful read!
By J.Daniel
I thoroughly enjoyed this reflective collection of stories. I especially liked the story about Dutch Harbor, Alaska where Oaksmith had worked on a fishing boat with the ending being really funny. I would have liked to have heard more of that story. The author, an award winning screenwriter, gives interesting glimpses into Hollywood and her life which includes coming to terms with her own depression. This is a quick, fun, insightful read.

Thank-God she didn't write about me.
By M Nichols
Let me start by saying I am a part of this far flung ginormous family, and had heard, through the grapevine, bits and pieces of these sad stories. Ellyn has taken what should have been family secrets and thrown them all out there in massive detail for all the world to read, and made them, for the most part, hilariously funny. From the desperate attempts at a "perfect" Christmas amid her father's alcoholism, to chasing down her runaway brother to another city, bringing total strangers along, all the while sharing her deepest darkest days of her own depression. I'm so proud of her for sharing this with the world and hope it can help someone else see that the darkness is only temporary. This too shall pass.

Great reading!
By InesM
This was an interesting book. Not the kind of book I'd use to choose. I've read an article the author published last month about it, I think. And as I enjoyed very much some of her stories in the near past, it definitely deserved a shot. And I'm glad curiosity won, because I liked it very much. The only reason I gave it just four stars, was because it was sort of shorter than what I like. I'd have loved the chance of reading a lot more of it.
